most transactions are done with debit cards these days so the idea that a separate currency bill is going to somehow "keep the money in the community" is flat out ridiculous.
this is not new, and very small. the famoust local money is the Swiss WIR. About 20% of domestic consumer sales are settled in WIR.
Each time there is "deflation" in the street markets these pop up more often, just to fight the lack of cash amongst "normal" people. Others buy just gold and silver :)
@odin422 if OPEC excepts the new euro for the sale of Oil it will work. Don't know how well that will set with the Federal Reserve Board. They weren't very happy with Saddam trying to except Euros for his Oil.
