well, it is simply another world, with 3D information you get a much better perception of what surrounds you and therefore the robot can make more accurate choices and object recognition is facilitated. Also, with a 2D information you can only calculate 2D motion like if you were moving on a flat surface, while with a 3D scanner you should be able to calcule your motion in the 3D space.
