  • thats very impressive m8 nice set up as well!

  • You forgot to yell That's True! Nah,Just kidding. Although I think all of them yell that. AMAZING JOB!!!!! Best on the internet.

  • absolutely fntastic!! I never even attempt to try to play this one but you do it flawlessly!! BRAVO! 5/5!!!

  • The ending is the signature! Why didn't you hit it completely!! AAWWWW.... Listen to it again and get that tom in on the 3 count of that grrove, bro! :) Good job though. Just technically speaking... :)

  • Very nice dude. Having been a Neil Peart protege myself in the day, I can say you came through. Obviously, you did drag on some areas and got sloppy (as you state), but I was impressed with your kit setup to match Neil's. Only issue...I played this song many times and just had to comment on you missing on of the prettiest points of the song at 1:01 - 1:04 and that FLAM part at 1:11-1:12 - there are none! Just a nice single roll. However @ 1:55 - 1:58 - that was hot! More complicated than CD

  • nice work on this! love this song!

  • amazin..... good work man................

  • You are a hell of a drummer mate - much, much respect to you! Fine quality sound you've got on your clip too. Thanks for posting it.

  • AWESOME YOUR AT THAT JOHN BONHAM STAGE!

  • That was amazing! This is definitely the hardest song to drum on, just by observing what you are doing, and listening to this great song. Kudos to you!

  • HELL YEAH!!!!

  • jesus... this song/performance by you is the best by far on Youtube. I mean this of ALL Rush drum covers. You really blow me away on this version. THE hardest cover to pull off from all Rush tracks....

My favorite of all your covers man!

Can we get a video tour of this kit please? That would be great!

  • Wow you nailed it!!

This is one of the hardest Rush songs to play on drums. You should do LVS next.

  • Grat job dude!!

  • BEST version of Red Lenses on the web.....HANDS DOWN!!!!

  • You did a really good job a tough song to play for sure. The Simmons sound great what model are they and how old?

  • Thanks! They are SDS-9 pads triggering an Akai S2000 sampler through a Roland PM-16 trigger-to-MIDI interface. The samples are from a Pearl electronic brain. I got all 8 of my Simmons pads on eBay, so I really don't know how old they are.

  • nice

  • dude!!! FINALLY!!! someone who actually listens and HEARS what Peart is doing...you have nailed this somg better than any other cover drummer I've seen/heard yet. ESPECIALLY THIS SONG!!! I don't even know what to say...

  • absolutly amasing... very close to neil to my opinion

  • not an easy song at all... would attempt it if I had all the 1000 drums parts I would need to play it.

  • excelent job dude, keep on rocking =)

  • WOW!! AWESOME!

  • Awesome job! I enjoy it more every time I watch. Thanks!

  • I turn away so I can breathe..

I saw you awhile back Rob, and just stumbled

on you again. Love this interpretation.

You rock on the drums bud (dare I say

    better than I?).

    Greatly enjoyed .. cheers !

  • Yeah Neil started using the Mallet Kat midi marimba in 1987. That was an incredible cover job of Red Lenses, nice Simmons set-up as well. Great job well done Rob!

  • Neil plays the electric xylaphone at the same time as he does the drums at the solo at 2:07. I had to see it with my own eyes to believe it. Outstanding job though 5 stars!

  • Are you sure? As far as I know, he didn't have a MalletKAT (electric xylophone) until the Hold Your Fire tour. Do you have a video of him doing this?

  • Positive. It is on one of the MANY Rush DVD's I have. I will look through them.

  • Dude......you suck!!! KIDDING!!!!!! That was incredible!!!!! You are forgiven for missing the ghost notes on the floor tom....MUCH RESPECT!!!!! 5 Sstars from me!!

  • Very nice :)

Red Lenses is one of those "underrated" Rush songs, imo and the playing is quite challenging... Watching you play it really demonstrates the brilliance Neil has at coming up with those insane patterns in the first place.

Hmm... Since you have the electrics (presumably), how about Between The Wheels? It's not as "upbeat" a song, but the choruses and especially the instrumental part is particularly fun to play.

  • err... when I say "you have the electrics (presumably)", I mean you presumably still have them... Obviously you have them in this video. :-p

  • how can ou afford that drumset?!

  • Enjoyed watching you play this!

    Well done.

    Post more from this era!!!!

  • The mix is excellent, the electronic sounds are what make this song. You did a fantastic job of merging the electronic and acoustic kit together. Very well done.

  • Still the best cover on Youtube for Red Lenses.

    You are amazing Rob!

I have a couple on my page so I would love your thoughts on my solo in Chicago when you have time. Your opinion means alot to me Rob as your playing is just amazing.

    All the best my man.

    Anthem

  • Are you using the original Simmons module for the toms?

  • The pads are from the Simmons SDS-9 series. The tom sounds are samples of a Pearl electronic kit played from an Akai S2000 sampler. The Clap Trap is a sample of a Simmons Clap Trap through the Akai. The bass and snare drum are stock sounds from a Roland SPD-20 (to my right in the video).

  • what abot the big drum to the right of yur snare....is that a tom, or a bass drum sideways

  • I just put up annotations with details. It's a home-made 22" x 14" gong bass drum.

  • You never really appreciate the difficulty of a song until you see a close up video like this.

  • Great job! Great Rush era!

  • wow! thanks, looks like fun!

  • how long does it take to learn playing like that...?(I guess it depends on every person ,but actually,I m 28 and I would like if it is not too late to learn playing drums and to reach a very good level... )

  • Best cover on YouTube.

    Outstanding job.

    Neil would be proud.

    take care

    Constantine

  • EXCELLENT LESSON, THANKS

  • Excellent Job!

  • Oustanding!

  • YES THE GOOD OLD SIMMONS HEXAGONAL ELECTRONI DRUMS ... the sound of the eighties ...respect man !!

  • this may sound crazy but you could replace the snare pad with a acoustic snare, then you have an extra pad!

  • is that a simmons?

dude, i actually think they stand tall among the new electronic drum kits

  • The pads are Simmons, but the sounds are Pearl electronics sampled on an Akai S2000.

  • Very good mate...

  • your bass drum and cymbals sound awesome

  • there was some small errors, but good effort

  • dammnnnn this is a harddd song but u nailed it

  • awesome job

  • Im impressed. Good Job!

  • awesome job!! must be fun

  • i love the second verse it is so over the top

  • I was hoping to find a band covering this song on YouTube but this is pretty damn good...great work! This is another under appreciated Rush great...I love the sarcasm in the lyrics.

  • That was just sick.

    Great job

  • Finally i found somebody that play Rush with felling , this is a hard song to play i know maybe one of the most difficult tracks of Neil Peart congratulations , i miss my simmons pads

  • ..........O.O holy crap!

  • man that was nuts how ling u been playing

  • Nice work! That was very entertaining. I've never seen anyone play this song on drums before. This tune represents Peart's style so well: busy and complex. It's like you had four arms going at some points!!!

  • Very very well played. I hust started working on this one, thanks for breaking it down for me...I've got some work to do! But great job, Ithink the best Peart rendition I've seen, congrats

  • everybody 2008 is just green we hallowed out the cellars, it's unoxengnetwork , pink say happy new twenty over eightSOMETHING that's why i love rush. everything else is just green!

  • Wow... Very nice! How long have you had those electrics? I haven't seen six-sided electric drums in ages.

  • I got those Simmons pads in December of 2003 on eBay.

  • damn! Awesome!!!

  • Great drumming. The guitar playing is just as bloody difficult!

  • Amazing! (=

  • Great job , thx for posting

  • Oh SHIT!!! :-)))

  • The playing on this is so amazing... Seriously, you are just a fucking great drummer and true fan of Rush to pull this off. Believe me, for every comment that you are recieving, there are 1000's more viewers just sitting back in awe of this... MORE VIDEOS MAN!

  • Very Very good

  • Fuckin nice dude!

  • Great drumming! How did you get the sound on this video to come through loud and clear? I listen through a pair of Bose Quiet Comfort 2 phones and it sounds really good.

  • God I wish I could play...... :(

  • Wow! Really great drumming!! I saw Rush in the 80s and on this song the drumset turned around and Neil went from electric to acoustic for an extended solo.

  • This and "Scars" are probably his hardest drum parts... Good job, man.

  • Really good job! (Thumbs Up) I didn't expect to find someone playing to Red Lenses!

  • Nice man 5 stars! Neil rules!

  • wow. that was amazing.

  • not a fan of the snare sound, but everything else is just cool

  • i love the way you tuned to 'say' no , fuck you'

    not blue

  • Very nice. It would sound better if you used the other ends of the sticks though.

  • Ur ABSOLUTELY AWESOME. The timing and beats are perfect. Love ur set. Keep up the great work!!!!

  • I dig the lower-lip bite and nostril flaring @3:11. There has yet to be a drummer who does NOT make that face during difficult passages.

  • Oh really? How about Peart himself? The guy hardly blinks an eye when he's playing!

  • This was much better! Your timing was better however towards the end you lost it a bit. Neal Peart is a great drummer. His drumming is difficult to copy and you did very well. I am a drummer however I dont waste my time trying to copy difficult tunes by Rush. However I did copy with perfect timing Freewill, Laville Strangiato, and Red Lenses using a metronome. One day I will post a video so you can see on the metronome how timing should be.

  • could you be any more of a conceited ass jockey?

  • One of the most enjoyable drumming "neil" vids I have seen yet and I've seen a lot.

  • Simply great drumming!

PLEASE, PLEEEEEEESE perform more or Grace Under Pressure or Power Windows!!!! I love your work! antheM

  • I've seen many of the great drummers: Alan White, Carl Palmer, Neil (of course), Bill Bruford, Mike Portnoy, and a number of the contemporary artists, Dude, I love your work. It's fluid, pronounced, when it has to be, and busy. 5 Stars!!

  • man you realy like neil!!!very great

  • it's true!

  • didn't appreciate how hard this song is to play until I saw it being played. well done.

  • are you doing mystic rhythms any time soon?

  • Awesome. Simply awesome. This video got me into the actual song, which I didn't like alot before. You're one of the best drummers on youtube.

  • yeah i agree youd probably be right up there with machine gun smith, but out of all the ones ive seen jsillers is the best

  • Watching this guy reminds me of the time my Grandmother spent a month doing a PAINT BY NUMBERS copy of THE LAST SUPPER. Is she an artist because she copied a master? Is this guy a musician? In his Red Barchetta butchery He actually edited the tape to look better and then made excuses! Stop HACKING on someone else and get creative Unless of course you simply are NOT CAPABLE of writing and arranging some original material. Into copying things? Work at Quick Print or become a stenographer.

  • I know jealousy is a pain, but save it for yourself, really.

  • Neil, You should be nice...Emulation is one of the highest forms of flattery.

  • People don't just GET ORIGINAL all of the sudden. Every creative person always emulates their heroes to start off with and then eventually develops their own style. This drummer's probably no different. And whose to say he considers himself "a musician"? Maybe it's just a hobby to him. If someone wants to call themselves a musician, then they should be getting paid to be one, otherwise, they're not.

  • Damn man, this is unbelieveable. I love this song and your kit, you rocked this song hard! I watch this all the time, and I've seen your others. You are too good, awesome jobs. Keep it up!

  • dude...you are amazing. you got something going man. keep it up. My favorite part of the song starts at 2:32. what kind of electric kit you have?

  • Thanks! The pads are Simmons SDS-9 series and I also have a Pintech foot trigger next to my hi-hat pedal. They go into a Roland PM-16 trigger to MIDI converter. The bass and snare sounds are coming from the Roland SPD-20 in the foreground (white thing). The tom and clap trap sounds are samples from an Akai S2000 sampler. The cymbals are Zildjian, except for the two Wuhan chinas.

  • Greatest song ever, greatest drummer ever...greatest job...EVER...wow man I am truly stunned. As a fellow drummer and RUSH fan...that was amazing.

  • Wow, that was awesome. Yes, that song is very difficult to learn. The timing was perfect.

  • Finally, a really good drumming performance. Great job. You know the song (physically and mentally). There is more to playing than the physical aspect and you display that. Plus you understand cymbal attack!

  • Awesome man, just awesome. 10/10

  • I am speechless. Best percussionist that I've ever seen to play this most difficult song. Well done my friend.

  • VERY good. love the simmons pads

  • Got to say I love the electronic drums

  • Really like how the music is loud enought to blend his drumming into the song but you still can tell hes doin it.Really really f-ing good dude.Keep it up

  • That was just awesome! You are truly talented. I enjoyed watching this very much. Made me appreciate the song in yet another way.

  • nicely done... b-man sends you a cheesesteak.

  • Damn man, your really good.Keep up on Rush, the GREATEST BAND IN THE WORLD

  • well done kuzinrob

  • Very good!! this song is very difficult and nice. Neil Peart is the best drummer ever.

  • Awesome! I have a gillion Rush albums and I have never heard this song or even know what album it is from! LOL..whatever, that is some awesome drumming, kuz!

  • I have been a drummer for many years! YOU ROCK, My friend! Great job.

  • Fantastic!

  • Wow, that was stellar.

  • This is a fantastic display of magic! Great Job Kuzin!!!

  • That was great! Well done.

  • Golden!
