fabioo, audio for video is an afterthought. especially when this video was done. consider that the audio bandwidth is narrow and the broadcast was probably mono, this is actually pretty good audio for the time. The sound man had to mic the band with a limited amount of mics and channels. He's going to get the main performers first and do the best he can with whatever he's got left to fill in the mix. try not to be so quick to judge and enjoy the fact that the footage exsists at all.
It sound 's live but i can't see a microphone in front of chets guitar. I know that chet played always live on tv, but on other clips, you can see a microphone.

i hate it soo much when they do this, they must think we are stupid.. why can i hear only guitar when the pianist is also playing at the same time in the video?.. why did they dub this concert with a completly different live recording? i cant imagine chet would of been happy with this.
Whoever said orchestration "ruined " country don't know what real country is. Before the hillbilly sound came to be called country we (in the mountains of NC) also listened to the big bands and show tunes just like the rest of the country. Real country is what middle America has always listened to and still does. It's not all about whining please feel sorry for me, although we do love that swill too, so just back off, (while we "slang some snot"!!!)

Yes, it's Johnny Cash, he had his own TV show for a while in the Sixties. Lot's of very famous musicians were guests. Chet also played with the Carter sisters for a long time. June Carter of course was Johnny's wife so they would have known each other well.
This man is the reason I play guitar, the reason I build guitars and the reason I am obsessed with guitars. He is a legend and will be missed. Can do without the orchestral backup...(PS- Loved John Cleese on the violin as well!)
One of the best songs played by one of the all time best guitarist. don't mind the violins but the brass sucks with this song. Oh well, it was probably in the 60's and very common for the variety shows.
I love this tune BUT I hate it when they take an old country song and add an orchestra in the background. They try to take country uptown which doesn't work. I also saw a show many years ago in which the entire show was done with Beatles music set to an orchestra...they ruined it.
but dude, in this case the orchestra really emphasizes the dynamics, i mean at the beginning you really can feel "the wind" when the strings silently accompany chet´s first verse :)
What do you think Chet did to country music? Added strings and horns and called it the "Nashville Sound.' Basically ruined it for years. Waylon brought it back to life in the 70's. As for the strings and horns and all on this one, Chet regularly played with Symphony Orchestras, so this was nothing new to him. His style was enhanced by an orchestra sometimes.
@nickfromdtown1992 finally someone agrees with me about modern country music and its 100000% percent lack, or in some cases absence, of musicianship! Why can't country be like it used to be!
@IBG67 well i saw a documentary called before the music dies. it was made in 2006. i think some of the concepts brought up in that have something to do with it. but honestly i think the reason is because chet really was just that good at guitar. and thats what it was. it was just pure enjoyment for him. and i think that fidelity is kind of lost
@helmsjon thats true but i still dont blame him for that because that was just his style. it was the record labels that saw that worked and tried to emulate it to sell records. i still think hes one of the best guitarists ever and hes written the only country song to ever make me tear up (still cant say goodbye)

Tommy and Chet are really great guitarist, Chet is a pioneer and a Legend, Tommy may never get the main stream air play to gain the popularity as Chet. However Tommy is way more entertaining, that shows by his tour dates! You gotta love them both, they are unreal guitar players and entertainers.
It is my opinion that the base line motif of windy and warm (The Am 6 5 6 4 6 5 6 4) is the most interesting combination of base & treble I've ever heard. The first time I heard I had to pull off the to the side of the road and listen. At that point, I imagined myself floating down the Mississippi on a timber log, with a couple of river rats. With the scent of bourbon and hard gambling in the air!
chet has no mistakes. he plays it note for note. thats why he is mr guitar. no one picked it like that. to play the melody is one thing. too add the bass and play like chet is just unbelivable. thats why u miss the soul. u dont know better. u have knopfler. halt the stuff chet could play i could never play he said. wake up and study

Tommy Emmanuel is much better than Chet. Most of Chet's playing is utterly borring and has no soul. Chet might be good for his time, but compared to Tommy Chet is nothing special.
That said, I do love Chet's live version of Yakety Axe. It's marvelous!
50's he wouldn't be noticed today? Well of course not. I just don't see myself sitting down and listening to a Tommy Emmanuel CD. The flash and little tricks he puts into his songs are impressive but who cares. Make the song sound beautiful.
tommy is a noob compare to what chet could play on a guitar. not even close.read what i said above this message. see some interviews. u are the worst kind. stop talking about opinions. learn facts. understand life
How about you tried opening your eyes, start using your ears and got an opininion of your own instead of own you've heard from other. You probably havn't even held a guitar in your hand.
Okay so you like Chet's music better than Tommy's. Fair enough. But to say Chet is a better guitar player than Tommy is downright untrue.
Wow, I could not disagree more. I discovered them both at the same time so I'm not speaking from historic bias. Tommy is standing on Chet's shoulders, but Chet is (was) head and shoulders above Tommy. Tommy is just coming into his element now so he may develop the breadth, soul, quality, taste, musicality that Chet had. Listen to both, lots of material, not just the odd song, and you'll hear it. Tommy has come along way and is almost there. Chet was already there.
A wonderful video! Although I must say I prefer Chet without accompaniment, or at most very limited accompaniment; isn't that the point of him playing the whole arrangement himself? Let Jerry Reed pick a little too, and you've got a 10 piece ensemble between the two of 'em! Best guitarist ever.
Chet's great, but how I dislike that boring tone from that classical for this kind of thing. Play it through your country gentleman, Chet, the tone would be so great for such a tune.
Wow, what a trip. The very first fingerstyle song that I learned 26 years ago, was Windy and Warm. Of course Chet looks and of course sounds a heck of lot better playing it than I did. He's such a major guitar influence. Such a solid player and one of the best. Thanks Chet. Peace.

Fretkillr, you are correct in your assessment...I own a Yamaha FG340 from about 1979, one of the most beautiful sounding instruments I have ever heard. Neck is warped by the previous owner's messing with the torsion rod, but it's still playable. Planning to restore it along with my father's early 1950's Gretsch soon. Lots of people have commented on how good that Yamaha sounds...
LIsten Guys. Chet did not use playbasck when performing in front of an audience. Have more respect for the man. Also, he has performed with Athur Fiedler and the Boston Pops orchestra. Actually playing live. Imagine that!!
BTW - Chet Atkins playing with a large orchestra is over-the-top silly. A solo performance would be just as powerful. I guess it's nice he got work for the other musicians. It was interesting to observe the absence of git mics or pickup git jacks.
Obviously it is playback, like all youtube. I think you mean it was being mimed, and you are probably right, but there is a chance it was miked with out-of-frame shotguns. There are a few soft piano chords near the start. The piano is certainly somewhere; on the stage. They probably played other pieces with the orchestra that night. I take it English is not your first language - respect. I agree the whole thing has a very contrived look. Did Johnny Cash borrow the suit of Liberace?
I love Chet and this version of the song, but something else made me crack up. A closeup of the acoustic guitar player in the orchestra playing a Yamaha guitar. Come on, cheapskate.
I just played a $300 Yamaha dreadnaught that was superb and I own the holy grails made by M, T, and G. The Yamaha FG series from the 70's are very sort-after guitars. The guy with the Yamaha is playing with Chet Atkins. baddd60 is an ill-informed, opinionated nobody who can't even post his own clips. Expensive means shit. I love Mr. Guitar. Thanks for posting.
Yamaha make expensive guitars as well as cheap ones. Even their cheap ones sound pretty good, and their top of the range instruments, with solid sitka spruce tops are concert standard.
"Shotgun" microphones were hung from booms, out of frame. Their tight pick-up pattern meant they could focus in on one instrument to get the broadcast mix right. Chet's guitar was probably pretty loud but not as loud as a string section. What do you mean, "no piano anywhere"?
Nice !!! I love this song. for some more good ol' country / bluegrass music check out ray riddle on myspace. do a search for his name. You won't be disappointed if you do...
This song is what Tommy Emmanuel heard on the radio when he was arround 10, and got him hooked on fingerstyle. I taught I had seen ALL Chet's post, but there you go....better late than never! thanks for posting!!

no. he has said that in a interview boy. lol;P punk. thats a fact. so simple is it. chet can play much more. nothing to talk about really. wake up

If you watch Chet's mouth closely you'll see him mouth the words "Tommy Emmanuel is gonna take this and run". :)

Chet has no soul?!?!
MilesPittman 3 years ago
chet has no mistakes. he plays it note for note. thats why he is mr guitar. no one picked it like that. to play the melody is one thing. too add the bass and play like chet is just unbelivable. thats why u miss the soul. u dont know better. u have knopfler. halt the stuff chet could play i could never play he said. wake up and study

Tommy Emmanuel is much better than Chet. Most of Chet's playing is utterly borring and has no soul. Chet might be good for his time, but compared to Tommy Chet is nothing special.
That said, I do love Chet's live version of Yakety Axe. It's marvelous!
ElvisStillRules 3 years ago
I doubt Tommy could play with the perfection Chet did.
oArtVandelayo 3 years ago
I completely disagree:
Tommy plays things that are much more difficult to play than anything Chet ever played. And Tommy plays it all to extreme perfection.
Chet is highly overrated in my oppinion. If Chet came up today, nobody would notice him.
ElvisStillRules 3 years ago
If Chet was playing what? Country from the
50's he wouldn't be noticed today? Well of course not. I just don't see myself sitting down and listening to a Tommy Emmanuel CD. The flash and little tricks he puts into his songs are impressive but who cares. Make the song sound beautiful.
oArtVandelayo 3 years ago
tommy is a noob compare to what chet could play on a guitar. not even close.read what i said above this message. see some interviews. u are the worst kind. stop talking about opinions. learn facts. understand life
3439ra 3 years ago
See interviews... HA! You are rediculous:
How about you tried opening your eyes, start using your ears and got an opininion of your own instead of own you've heard from other. You probably havn't even held a guitar in your hand.
Okay so you like Chet's music better than Tommy's. Fair enough. But to say Chet is a better guitar player than Tommy is downright untrue.
ElvisStillRules 3 years ago
Wow, I could not disagree more. I discovered them both at the same time so I'm not speaking from historic bias. Tommy is standing on Chet's shoulders, but Chet is (was) head and shoulders above Tommy. Tommy is just coming into his element now so he may develop the breadth, soul, quality, taste, musicality that Chet had. Listen to both, lots of material, not just the odd song, and you'll hear it. Tommy has come along way and is almost there. Chet was already there.

That first song was Trambone I learned it in 1957, I was 11.

Dave, I second that. Chet by himself is sheer genious/magic/brilliance. I play guitar because of Chet. God, I miss him.
ROCKSTARCRANE 3 years ago
A wonderful video! Although I must say I prefer Chet without accompaniment, or at most very limited accompaniment; isn't that the point of him playing the whole arrangement himself? Let Jerry Reed pick a little too, and you've got a 10 piece ensemble between the two of 'em! Best guitarist ever.

what is that song that he plays with piano in the intro?

He didnt need the band backing him up. great stuff

Chet's great, but how I dislike that boring tone from that classical for this kind of thing. Play it through your country gentleman, Chet, the tone would be so great for such a tune.

that g6122-1962 was beautiful for every tune

Wow, what a trip. The very first fingerstyle song that I learned 26 years ago, was Windy and Warm. Of course Chet looks and of course sounds a heck of lot better playing it than I did. He's such a major guitar influence. Such a solid player and one of the best. Thanks Chet. Peace.

Cool how he takes a slightly laid back tempo - If I'd only practiced more!

I can clearly hear a jazz style piano periodically throughout the song. The entire song has a jazzy feel to it. Very nice!

Lots of people have commented on how good that Yamaha sounds...

knuckleheads - any performance by Chet Atkins is a great performance, even when he was having an off day. Please, just enjoy the show.

LIsten Guys. Chet did not use playbasck when performing in front of an audience. Have more respect for the man. Also, he has performed with Athur Fiedler and the Boston Pops orchestra. Actually playing live. Imagine that!!

Chet is the only one there that looks "normal"! The orchestra looks like a bunch of geeks!
lhall234 4 years ago
BTW - Chet Atkins playing with a large orchestra is over-the-top silly. A solo performance would be just as powerful. I guess it's nice he got work for the other musicians. It was interesting to observe the absence of git mics or pickup git jacks.
Fretkillr 4 years ago 2
Obviously it is playback, like all youtube. I think you mean it was being mimed, and you are probably right, but there is a chance it was miked with out-of-frame shotguns. There are a few soft piano chords near the start. The piano is certainly somewhere; on the stage. They probably played other pieces with the orchestra that night. I take it English is not your first language - respect. I agree the whole thing has a very contrived look. Did Johnny Cash borrow the suit of Liberace?
JohnMalcolm 4 years ago
I love Chet and this version of the song, but something else made me crack up. A closeup of the acoustic guitar player in the orchestra playing a Yamaha guitar. Come on, cheapskate.
baddd60 4 years ago
Maybe he's not worried about price but prefers a guitar which to him sounds nice and is comfortable play? You know, like most people?
Expensive means shit.

That says it all.......haha.
baddd60 4 years ago
I just played a $300 Yamaha dreadnaught that was superb and I own the holy grails made by M, T, and G. The Yamaha FG series from the 70's are very sort-after guitars. The guy with the Yamaha is playing with Chet Atkins. baddd60 is an ill-informed, opinionated nobody who can't even post his own clips. Expensive means shit. I love Mr. Guitar. Thanks for posting.
Fretkillr 4 years ago 2
Yamaha make expensive guitars as well as cheap ones. Even their cheap ones sound pretty good, and their top of the range instruments, with solid sitka spruce tops are concert standard.
JohnMalcolm 4 years ago 2
In case anyone is interested the first song with FLoyd is called "Trambone". covered by ventures and various instrumental groups.
thesmoothdiva 4 years ago
You're right, no microphones anywhere! But no piano anywhere also :)
stoob1969 4 years ago
"Shotgun" microphones were hung from booms, out of frame. Their tight pick-up pattern meant they could focus in on one instrument to get the broadcast mix right. Chet's guitar was probably pretty loud but not as loud as a string section. What do you mean, "no piano anywhere"?
JohnMalcolm 4 years ago
No way. This is totally playback only.
I mean ´no piano´ as there is totally no piano in the music and there is no pickup or shotgun mike on Chets guitar.
stoob1969 4 years ago
i can hear the piano but it is very low in the mix.....
