  • Jack Lemmon had two of the best endings in movies ever!

  • The Captain, in technical terms, is screwed.

  • Its sad that this classic movie was followed by Ensign Pulver in 1964,it was a joke, and a plle of crap,I loved the way Jack Lemmon found his balls

  • "somebody must have been DRUNK to send US to a liberty port..."

  • I always liked it how the sailor behind Pulver clenches his fist when Pulver says "Mr Roberts is dead"

Such a great movie. I remember watching this all the time when I was younger with my dad, a former Navy Officer.

  • I would like to see a remake of this, starring George Timothy Clooney as Mister Roberts. It might work.

  • One of the greatest movie endings of all time.

  • The Quiet Man is my favorite, and this is my 2nd favorite. Love it!! As a teen I watched it in the local theatre about 8 times. Awsome movie!!Who's to replace these actors or movies today? you're right, no one.

  • Yes, Ensign Pulver, you are now a man in the eyes of Mr. Roberts.

  • Somebody needs to post the scene where they make "whiskey" for Pulver so he can get that nurse drunk!!

  • this was one of my favorite parts of the movie.

  • This was one of the best movies ever. lol I've got to get me some of that Fulminated Mercury.

  • OMG, that face Frank makes when he is crushed by Mr. Robert's death is amazing acting from Jack Lemmon. I can't think of anyone better to play Pulver or Roberts than the two who portrayed them. =)

Rest in Peace, Mr. Lemmon and Mr. Fonda. :')

  • I think the letter Mr. Roberts wrote to Frank (which he read to the men before he read himself the letter saying Mr. Roberts was dead) was a better choice to put up for the rest of crew to see. :')

  • I've seen the movie a hundred times and still crack up at the scene when Pulver and the Captain meet for the first time: "How long have you been aboard Pulver?" "F ... fourteen Months, sir." "Fourteen months!"

  • @logancody05 I have the DVD and it has the scene reenacted by Fonda, Lemmon, and Cagney on Ed Sullivan's Toast of the Town. It's even funnier.

I would post it, but one, I don't know how to rip DVDs apart. Two I don't want to rip it apart because I heard if you do that, it'll damage it. And three, I don't want my channel taken away if I do and get caught by idiot YouTube video/channel wipers.

  • @starrbeatlesqueen You may be able to help me. I watched a film years ago from the fifties/sixties. It was a comedy with I think an American ship or sub. They did NOT want to go to war, because they had a great time living with the natives in the Pacific. They would order parts for their ship which did not exist, as a stalling tactic. The name please.

  • @1965guitarboy I think the movie you're thinking of is Operation Petticoat (a 1959 film starring Cary Grant and Tony Curtis).

  • @starrbeatlesqueen Thanks for reply. It wasn't that film. We saw it the other night. I remember that they sent an order for a 'no 3 primary fulminator', or somthing like that. No such part exists so that extended their stay at the port. any ideas? thanks

  • @1965guitarboy Maybe it was The Caine Mutiny, but probably not.

  • @starrbeatlesqueen I think it maybe Mr Roberts or Father Goose. I will let you know, lol

  • I've seen the movie a hundred times and still crack up at the scene when Pulver and the Captain meet for the first time: "How long have you been aboard Pulver?" "F ... fourteen Months, sir." "Fourteen months!"

  • Turncer Classic Movies showed this last night. If they ever remake "Mr. Roberts" they should cast Tom Hanks as Mr. Roberts, Leonardo DiCaprio as Ensign Pulver, Jack Nicholson as the Captain, and Rip Taylor as the Doctor.

  • @bender1958 If they ever remake "Mr Roberts" Someone in Hollywood should be shot. I hate it when they remake great movies they almost always turn out like crap.

  • @bender1958 They already did...1984 for television.

I agree with aqinthe. They should never make remakes of really good movies such as this. It's bad enough they made a one season TV series out of this and a sequel out of this movie "Ensign Pulver" (in which Jack Nicholson did have a role in as Dolan).

  • @starrbeatlesqueen The old 1966 show was pretty good as I remember. I would get it on DVD.

  • When I was on the Capodanno we got a palm tree and put it on the starboard bridge wing, the CO almost died laughing when he went out and saw it.

  • Great, great movie. And as much praise as Jack Lemon receives, I still think he is/was underrated as an actor.

  • Mr Roberts died because of his transfer. But, he was dying anyway ( emotionally ) on "this ole tub " beforehand ! He had the guts to do what he needed to do and did it. He was selfless and compassionate toward the crew and took the blame to protect them ! And, Mr Roberts is right. Its better to die fighting than to sail from tedium to apathy and back with an occasional side trip to monotony !! Great movie !!!!!!

  • Anybody who has ever served onboard a Navy ship knows how true to life this movie was! Hollywood had "Mr Roberts" pegged to a T!

  • Jack Lemmon was cool as a kid i loved to watch him and Walter Matthau they were both great and funny!

  • I spent two years of Pulver like work avoidance in the Navy and still get the chills from Pulver's amazing slow burn reaction to the letter. That little shudder of horror stole the movie from a cast of screen legends

  • Lemmon...1:55.. "No what's all this crud, about no movie tonight". Nice.

  • all you smart collage guys whats all this crud about no movie tonight classic but ford over did it with the sailors goofy parts

    and some parts are dubbed

  • Agreed. This movie seemed overly melodramatic to me; still, some great scenes and some great lines.

  • this is one of my favorite movies of all time!

  • I'm going to be auditioning for the play!!! I can't wait!!

  • One of Fonda's GREAT roles, and overlooked Oscar worthy performances....

  • How long have you been on my ship, Pulver? 14 months. 14 months!!!!!

  • A sad ending but, overall one of my all time favorite movies. Thank you!

  • Jack Lemmon was an amazing actor. this role won him an oscar for best suporting actor. a one of a kind talent. may he rest in peace always.

  • This has been one of my all-time favorite movies for a long time.

  • this is a good movie!
