The artist is Max Crook, the inventor of the Musitron (the distinctive instrument you can hear throughout the song). This song was also accidentally pressed on to the B-side of a few copies of Del Shannons "runaway" on London Records. I used to have the Snake on a U.S. import on Big Top Records (a white Demo), but let that go when I found this London Demo.
It depends whether the info in the run out groove is stamped or scribed , assuming that stamping would have been part of the pressing process, that might be an indication, maybe? Sorry not much help, was I?
Remember they used to play this at sneakers (the Bush) on sundays in the mid eighties - quality, brings it all back
