I liked BOTH versions! Appreciating them both is so much a better experience than opting out in cultish support of one over the other. Clearly there's more than one way to deservingly portray a WINNING STORY in film! Crawford's and Davis's mutual HATE captivates the audience, via blunt force trauma of their acting abilities. The Redgraves' egoless LOVE of acting shines through refreshingly in their brilliant performances. Hate or love, trained actors use their energies to better the larger work.
I do think this version has a more "natural" flow and is far more believable than the 62 version. Each version; however, brings a different perspective and point of view. Bette and Joan were more macabre. These two are more natural and you see the evolution and purpose behind their relationship more clearly
Look folks. The whole reason to watch a movie like "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" is to see two actresses battle it out in a Grand Guignol frightfest. No offense to those who like the "complex sister relationship" but if I want to watch that, I'll tune in to Dr. Phil! Come on! Bette and Joan are fantastic. Let's remake "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte" with real life cousins.....Yuck.
I'm usually the 1st to shout out about re-makes of 'classics',but on this occasion I'd have to say that this does not come across as being a re-make in the usual sense. The Redgraves aren't particularly my favourite acting family,I happen to think they're all somewhat over-rated,but that's just me.However,in this coupling of Lynne & Vanessa I believe they 'acted their socks' off.Their often fiery relationship in 'real life' is evident in this film, which just adds to it's quality!
I'M SORRY, BUT THIS NEW VERSION REALLY SUCKED, PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT ANY MORE VERSIONS. THE CLASSIC, IS THE BEST ONE. IF IT'S NOT BROKEN DON'T FIX IT... GOOD GRACIOUS...
This version can't compare with the original masterpiece, this looks and sounds like a film you would watch on daytime tv! the fact that's suposed to be a terror film this one doesn't acheive one bit of the sense.
Fantastic clip! THank you very much fro posting this! On a side note, I've been looking for a copy of this tv movie for ages, would you happe to know where I could download one? Thank you! :)
I'm surprised but this is my favorite of the two. The plot is more believable. The one who plays 'Jane' in this version more accurately depicts a sisterly relationship. The 1962 version really misses the complexity of the relationship of the sisters. This version constantly has "Jane's" character falling in and out of psychosis with moments of clarity (showing care and love) which (IMO) gives the story depth. This "Jane" does crazy better. Bette's "Jane" was just pissed off all the time.
@MartiniShelby EXACTLY! The depth of emotion in this version is what makes this my favorite. Yes, the original worked very well as a horror film. It's very dark and twisted. And the knowledge of the HATE between Davis & Crawford adds to the tension. But the Redgrave sisters ARE these characters for this film. They are so much more believable and natural, due to the emotion they put into it.
@jdoesmith85210 I believe it was remade by the son of the original director. It features real-life sisters, as well as setting the story in modern day AND in color, which is welcome to younger viewers. I think the psychological development of the characters is much greater as well in this version. I think of it much more as a revisioning, instead of a flat-out remake.
@Grinnygog1975 The choice of adapting the story to the present-day and in the medium of color film is indeed admirable, but to retain Davis' trademark thin-as-pancake make-up for Baby Jane's character is what keeps putting me off. Indeed the relationship, the intimacy, and the depth is explored quite well, and Vanessa's Blanche even bares some fangs in this scene (which can either upset the "surprise" twist revelation or perhaps build up to it, I haven't seen this version in its entirety).
No one else could ever play these roles like Betty and Joan did I mean that would be like getting somebody else besides Stallone to play Rambo.
