  • Greetings from India

  • THIS IS SAVAGE !!! :D

  • I was introduced to The Bothy Band over 25 years ago and I still cannot get enough of them :~)

  • @MisterTeeeEeee uilllean pipes

  • the term Uilleann is a new term about 100 years old the instrument was a pastoral pipe and then union pipe before the gaelic makeover by Flood.

  • @seonidh Right about the term "union", but the pastoral pipe was a somewhat different instrument, before unions, its chanter has the low minor 7th note below the drone like Highland chanter that the union/uilleann pipe gave up --possibly for superior upper 2nd octave performance. These are very tricky instruments to perfect. We today who make them may not have all the expertise that created the best of them. There's too much variation in performance these days.

  • @Dayepipes it is held that the pastoral pipes were the ancestor of the union/uilleann pipes it shares so many features of the later modified instruments including 2 octaves. As musical tastes changed the instrument was improved to play staccato the low C# removable footjoint and the chanter was modified. Also the union pipes were modified improved by makers all over the british isles Ireland, scotland and england from the mid-18th to 19th centuries Hugh Cheap's 2009 book is an excellent source.

  • @MisterTeeeEeee sounds dead romantic Uilleann (but it just means elbow) lol

  • @MisterTeeeEeee is a Uilleann Pipes

  • Has to be my all time Favourite Bothy Band number. I defy anyone to listen to this without tapping their hands or feet away to it !!!!

  • I love how you can hear the band members stomping time as they play....brilliant!

  • I want to share a pint of my homebrew and a good fiddle session with Kevin Burke!

  • Matt Molloy is perfection incarnate and the violonist...what an aura!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @EinfarchesLeben uhm... aura?

  • @TheDonaldido having an aura is having a presence that naturally imposes itself and occupies the space in such a magestic way :) there is something about him that fills the air so graciously.

hope i managed to make it clear :)

    take care friend.

  • DJFozter and scotrelf:

This is just magic and scotrelf, I too am familiar with that "Live in Paris" LP, was it called "After hours"? That had one fabulous rendition of this same tune.

  • Yes indeed - had a blue cover I think - played it to death at the time and once 'nearly saw them' at a folk festival in northern scotland in the late 70s - unfortunately they were too pissed to play!

  • I'm sure there must be some be some poster out there who can post their 1975 album. They were the only band who were as good as Planxty.

  • Truely amazing work bilko. The "lyrics of life" truely spoke to me in ways i couldn't imagine. These memorable videos take me back to the good old days, when i used to plough. I will thank god when i pray for your beautiful uploads!

  • Simply Beautiful!

    Best wishes from Bulgaria!

  • magnificent track - equals their performance in paris

  • Ireland in my heart

  • MIGHTY

  • just what I needed! thank you for this wonderful music!

  • Amazing vintage footage of such an influential band.

  • The first 25 seconds are just pure beauty

  • Top musicians !! Phalaïna

  • Ils ont tous l'air de tirer la gueule et personne qui bouge...

  • God bless RTE

  • Fantastic! thanks

  • Planxty or the Bothy Band, The Bothy Band by a country mile. but thats not to say Planxty were not great, but the BB WERE UNIQUE.

  • Who's better? Planxty or Bothy Band????

  • fantastic -

first time I've seen them play it

I nearly did in the 70s at a festival in scotland - turned up at the pub where they were playing a bit after they were due to start (hangover) .

I asked the landlord why they weren't there. He said "They are!" I said "where" He said "There in the corner"

In the corner was a pile of bodies, drunk, sleeping on the floor

Ah well - some things are not meant to be...
