I most love to see the dazzlingly beautiful Dame Elizabeth Taylor, as Katherina, in "The Taming of the Shrew"; As Katherina, the more bawdy she acted, the sweeter and lovlier she seemed to Petruchio, who from a tower of strength, became a tower of jelly, but love-happlly so. And off camera Elizabeth downplayed her celebrity to avoid towering over the men in her life.
It's a humorous concept, but I think in reality Petruchio would eventually get bored in their marriage since the challenge that attracted him to Katharina is no longer there.
@quemacha Which is why a lot of people like to imagine that she's only pretending to be tamed at the end and that the shrewishness actually continues throughout their marriage.
I think this Kate is a over-angry, rather like a very large toddler throwing a tantrum. She acts like a lunatic when she is simply supposed to be shrewish, not someone who throws things around and shrieks.
I agree with ginger1961: I like the Marc Singer version. It's hilarious and interesting.
@Felicity1247 But in the original play, isn't there a scene where Kate has her sister tied to a chair while beating her? That goes beyond shrewishness as well.
@EmpressJudge13 Yes, that's going beyond shrewishness. I don't know what Shakespeare was intending, but it's much easier to take in the abuse when you see it not taken lightly.
Shakespeare actually based this play on the real life relationship between Burton & Taylor. For real! He used Doc Brown's Flux Capacitor and Delorean for the time travel.
I played Katherine in The Taming of the Shrew during my senior year of High School. It was so much fun to be mean. I loved being the bitch. I had a blast during the play. I love this movie. these two have chemistry like no others.
Richard Burton is so handsome! I love all the little gestures he puts in, such as when he says 'and if she refuse to wed...', catches a glimpse of himself in the window and pauses uncertainly, then primps a little, and finally grimaces fiercely, kind of growls, and pushes up his sleeves, to give encourage himself before his first encounter with Kate. Those little touches give him a vulnerability that adds so much to the fun.
I love it when people take this spin on the story, and have Petruchio clearly actually enjoy sparring with Kate, so that it isn't a play about how man is dominant and all that rubbish. Makes it pretty much the best play/movie of all time!
Could you please download the whole movie.

Richard Burton looks so different with all that facial hair. It's like Michael York with the curly dark hair in ROMEO AND JULIET.

favorite play of Shakespeare, I honestly dont believe that Kate is actually tamed, she is sarcastic and plotting the whole time.
