  • Free shit!!! Nice

  • OMG and all of that for FREE??

  • its old but its beautifull!

  • Anyone knows how to run it without the fans, they are very very noisy.

  • @scallywagin That would kind of be suicide to the machine though. You probably just need some sort of resister or something across the leads to make the machine think the fan is still there. Just an idea. Not sure if it would work. Generally these servers aren't in your house so the noise probably wasn't a concern when they were designed. :)

  • I once had the opportunity to get a hold of a DEC AlphaServer 4/300 Ultra for the cost of the drives in it, but we moved and my parents wouldn't let me put it in the new house...

  • @douro20 Yeah my parents were a little hesitant when I brought this stuff home. Now I have to find storage for it so we can enjoy the summer and get to our bikes in the garage lol.

  • Do you still have the Dell poweredge 2500? Cuz, I have one that I took apart, but i don't think I put it back together right. U should make a video of it open and a review.

  • I wouldn't recommend you throwing away those PowerEdge 2500 and 2450 servers. Dell's great, and you can use them for other functions like running web, database, and mail apps. Put Windows Server 2008 on them.

  • I found one at 599 Euros (in Germany). Where are you working? Probably i must change my job ...

  • @VictorButny I work for a large graphics company in Minnesota, USA

  • Need to put those servers in a rack, That would be so kool

  • @Mrthemaxdj1 Yeah I ended up making a wooden rack for the reason that the metal racks are too tall for our garage...lol

  • What are the specs on these servers? Processor, RAM, etc...

  • @jaysonkarenjohnson 1.5GB Memory, 260GB Storage after format, two Intel Xeon CPU's 3.06GHz Each, Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid.

  • What are the specs on this server? Processor, RAM, etc...

  • Did you ever have issues with Ubuntu not detecting hard disks & SCSI Controllers?

  • @MatrixiondotNet Luckily I haven't had any issues with the disks or the controller. Is this a common problem with Ubuntu and/or this machine? Are you having problems with it?

  • It looks like ubuntu Desktop Edition maybe 6th or 7th gen

  • Love the way the gas cans fit with it, for emergency data wipe ;)

  • @meuandthelot LOL. Yeah they are empty. lol. Funny way of putting it lol. For instant secure wipe lol.

  • wish i worked where you worked

  • Yo could you get me ine of those if the they throw another one out. Greatly appreciated!!!!!!

  • @bigriggs22 I don't think they will be getting rid of any more. They were gonna trash these because they upgraded. It might be a long time before they upgrade again. Its possible I could loose my job if I gave them away as well. Not sure though.

  • Hey, I picked up a ibm x345 a few months ago on the cheap (not free though) and am wondering if you have sound?

  • @recyclingismylife Actually...I have not tested the sound to see if it works. Even if it didn't for me it wouldn't be a heart breaker. I should give it a try some time. I wonder if the sound card is supported by Ubuntu. Does yours have sound output?

  • @djrock9000 I dont think so, but I did find a low profile pci sound card that may work. It'll be a few weeks (or maybe months) before I have enough cash to build it out, so I'll let you know if/when that happens

  • @recyclingismylife Cool...Keep me informed. Currently my machine is off because of the intense heat in my garage. The fans were running a little loud so I shut her down.

  • @TheLolWutBBQ Yeah I couldn't believe it either. I helped move some of the equipment and figured I could take some home so I asked and I also couldn't believe the answer. He said yeah. I am sure it would have costed them more to recycle it than to give it away.

  • Is that Ubuntu the Desktop or Server version?

  • @RanDoMkId73 Oh and I'll take some of those hard drives if you want me to take them off your hands ;-)

  • @RanDoMkId73 Thats the Desktop version. I don't have the experience yet to work with the server edition. I would kind of miss using the mouse too.

  • What do you work with??

  • @airplanes717 - I work in the Graphics industry. I am a Preflight Technician. I am kind of like the buffer between the client/CSR/and production. I also work in Digital Asset Management.

  • soo cool

  • nice collection (:

  • @fergoway2go - Thanks. I still need to come up with a reason to use them...LOL!

  • You use OpenManage on that dell 2450 on a 64 bit OS? If so,how did you get it to work? I have a poweredge 2450 myself and I don't know if I can get my OpenManage 7.2.2.2 to work with Vista 64 bit.

  • @Zorack10

theres your problem your useing vista 64 on it.

  • uhhh deluxedookie,on what?

  • @Zorack10

    vista has some bad drivers.

  • You don't know what you're talking about.

  • @Zorack10

    ok

  • @Zorack10 - I am actually not sure on the 2450. I have not powered it on to see whats installed yet. Just did a test power on to see if it worked. Its just been sitting.

  • I like the hotswap fans.

  • @LauxHawk - Yeah makes for a very easy replacement. Plus there are no screws to lose.

  • i got a poweredge 2500 from work also. it has three 18gb quantum scsi's that run at 10000 rpm. but only 512mb ram. three reduntant PS's. i am going to TRY to install ubuntu 9.10. what is the raid for 3 HD's? 0,1,5? nice video dude.

  • @tutor432 - I am not completely sure which raid format is compatible. Raid 0 is fastest... Raid 1 is safest.... Raid 5 is all around good but needs more drives(3 and up) and can be slower with onboard controllers. It all depends on what you wish to do. If you need one giant HD, or a raid that will save you from lost data when a disk dies.

  • I Don't Know Why Anyone Would Want To Throw That IBM Server.

  • @Max1636 - My thoughts exactly. I guess they might not have seen the value that this equipment has to people like me and you. They could have sold it for a little pocket cash! LOL.

  • Hi, I would like to make an offer on your scsi array.

I will send you a message.

  • Nice video. Good finds, enjoyed the rack video as well. Enjoy these servers, and the fun-learning they provide!

  • Wow dude that looks cool. but what are you hosting?

  • At the moment I don't have anything being hosted there but I am using it as a proxy server. I also use it for some temporary storage. I am trying out some surveillance software for video cameras. So far no luck with that. :)

  • verry nice :)

  • Thank you! I have fun working with it. Right now I am using it for software testing.

  • Hi there, I also have an xseries 345, I have noticed in slot 2 on the motherboard you have some kind of raid card inserted, could you let me know what the make/model card is please? Thanks & nice setup by the way!!

  • Thanks, I will definitely check the raid card for you neil9443. Since I don't have access at the moment to the server, I will check it hopefully tomorrow morning and get back to you tomorrow night.

  • That would be great, Thanks for your help buddy!

  • Ok so what I have found wasn't much...Its an IBM (02R0970) SCSI Controller. I looked online and prices range from $100-300. I am sure if you needed one you could find it for less though. The card is in the PCI-X 64 Bit Slot. It has a battery so if you purchase one be sure the battery is fresh. Enjoy and thanks for asking.

  • What do you mean "wtf"? Just curious! Questions?

  • Where do you work? lol

  • I actually work in the Graphics Industry as a Preflight/Digital Asset Manager. The reason they were getting rid of this equipment was because we had just moved into a new building about a year ago, they are still getting rid of the stuff we don't need! LOL.

  • Wow.. you got it for free! lucky!

lol.. im buying a IBM 346 SERVER with x2 Intel Xeon 3.0 GHz 4GB of RAM for like 269 dollars. plus s&h lol..

  • I have the same Thermaltake SViking case for my desktop computer.

For my server I have an Antec NSK2400 case.

I can't use a "proper" server right now, I've got roommates and no basement so the only place I can put it is in my room. Way too loud!

  • The SViking case is sweet! Plenty of room for HDs and so much easier to manage than a standard case if you use it as a server. I did have problems with the thermometer though. It doesn't read the temp from the remote sensor for the CPU anymore. Strange huh? I just put it in the garage to make room for my other projects to come. Since I now have the IBM server I can use it instead. So far the IBM has been running nonstop since about 3 weeks before I made the video. Very reliable!

  • very nice i want :P

  • You can actually pick these up for between $200-400 on Ebay sometimes even cheaper. I happened to get lucky. It is a great learning tool as well!

  • yea i got a free netvista the other day im prob going to use it as a server it only has a 40 gb hdd and im broke lol
