actually, there is no real limit on levels, private servers are emulators therefore they aren't exactly the same code blizzard uses, so the makers of emulators usually just choose a level cap.

actully the max level on a private serve ris 256 no matter how high they set it. The database only allows 256

Current Ascent Revs can only be set to a max level of 255. There are ways to bypass that cap to whatever you would like but that requires self compiling the svn of the ascent trunks which editing is quit difficult.
