He sounded like a dying cat then; scratchy, low, and with no energy. On this tour he still sounds really raspy when he screams, and they're real short, quick "ows" and "wows" -- imagine Steven Tyler burning his hand on a stove -- but they have a lot more energy. I heard he saw a vocal coach before this tour, and I think it shows.
Sounds like what gpeckrd said there...probably tuned down so the singer type old boy DLR can sing his "high" notes or for that matter, Eddie is hitting a pedal when it sounds outta tune. Probably a pitch shifter in his foot rig. Besides, he's got that--Can't remember the name I haven't played in so long--the nut that clamps down by the head of the guitar. It Shouldn't Ever go out of tune.
I don't play guitar but there is definitely something either wrong with the way Eddie is playing that part of something wrong with the tuning. It does NOT sound the same way as I've heard it over the years dozens of times. Try to remember too that Van Halen has never been a band to play the same song the same way twice in their career. Just listen to David Lee Roth sing ANY song and you'll immediately recognize that. It's a shame all the money people waste seeing Van Halen play live! What a joke

If you want to hear real music played live, then see a real band.
The guitar is slightly out at the beginning, his tremolo doesn't return to the zero point. After the first divebomb, it returns to proper tune. Floyd's do that.

Maybe it's tuned down a half-step...sometimes old bands tune down so the singer can, you know, hit those high notes that he can't hit anymore.
Rush does it and they actually sound heavier, very stoner of them, but they've always been a stoner band.

Hi, David! I'm pretty happy that rather than you defend the band and make excuses for this poor performance that you actually admitted that bands "have their ups and downs". It never fails to amaze me how many people will disagree with me about something when clearly what they're saying is the furthest thing from the truth. There are only a handfull of bands out there that really put on a wonderfully entertain show live. The rest of the bands look like their at band practice in the garage!

@hunglikepissant Eddie use to run wireless back with a rack system in the late 80s but he had some issues with it so he runs hardline through pedals now

I'm not a massive VH fan but when i heard the Best of Both Worlds album i couldn't tell the difference between the voices so i don't know why people put down Sagar because THEY SOUND THE SAME!

Still rocking. I love it man. I hope they keep going on long as they can. Its awesome to see David Lee Roth back as it never was quite the same without him, I think mostly cuz he's who we all got used to first. They made some great music with Sammy too. Hell its all good.
One of my favorite Rock bands of all time Is Van Halen. So many bands have some killer songs though. Its hard to pick favorites.
