This might seem as a pretty stupid question but im not from the usa im from the uk im just wondering why do trains in the usa keep letting off the horns all the time? in the uk trains hardly ever use their horns
Wonder what would happen if you stood in the crossing? Would there be blood and guts all over the place as the train slammed into your body? How long would it take a train at that speed to stop? I'm sure the engineer would be horrified if someone stood in the crossing and he blew the horn in desperation, and he couldn't stop in time. He would probably have nightmares for weeks. It's never a good idea to be right next to the tracks when a train is coming. You only have one life.
I like to stand back at least 30' from the track when spotting or filming. A train hualing empty divided lumber cars would be the most dangerous to you if one of the load shackles was loose. It could ricochete of the rail bed sending projectile rocks or worse yet it you and kill you on impact. As for the tripod. I use a Joby Gorilla Pro. It can't get knocked over as it can hold a 10lb camera while lashed around a heavy pipe.
2. You turned your back to the train after the locomotives had passed, but with all of the cars still to follow.
Not only were you in danger of being hit by flying debris from the train & the vortex it created when it passed by, but with your back to it you could have been hit with something flying off the side & not knowing it. It was a good shot, but please, stand back a ways. Be safe around the tracks, & you'll be around longer.

This is the kind of stuff that gives us law following railfans a bad name with the crews & railroads. This is much too close to be to the tracks & it is tresspassing. Please keep your train watching safe & legal & don't ruin it for the rest of us who follow the rules. Thank you
This happened to me last week with a CN freight.... luckily it hit a fence and I ran up and had to hold my camera and my tripod for 2 minutes 2 meters away from a fast freight train......
Haha i would tell my son the same thing.. Standing there to film gets you a good shot view of how fast the train is going but you need to dig to put the stand in a fit mode so the wind doesn't knock it down.
Hmm, well I was thinking about this earlier. The Acela is alot more aerodynamic. So it probably doesn't cause the same amount of air to move as a box freight train, plus it's alot smaller.
I'll be sure to pull a close shot like this while in Mazon, IL this summer. Hopefully my tripod and camera won't get owned, though; My tripod has only ever been knocked over by wind twice, both times by Q390 in Berea, OH.
You should get a Vanguard Tracker Series tripod. That's what I use, and its very heavy duty and the wind of a train going by won't knock it over. Its about $175, but well worth it!
I tried to take a shot like that and the train blew my camera over, too. Next time I try a shot like that I'm going to duct-tape the camera or tripod to something.
BTW guys, I know the kid who shot this and he wasn't as close as the camera implies.
