Let's all argue about whether the straw is really a kazoo or a reed instrument or maybe a utensil for drinking or possibly a weapon. Maybe this new invention is a really quiet drumstick. Or a walking stick for a really short person. Or a hunting lure for some really loud, annoying animal. Or a tent post for a bug-house. Maybe it is the tubular part of an organ. Or a not-so-pretty windsock. Heaven forbid we call it a kazoo though.

That's not a kazoo. It's a goose call that we use to make as kids. You make the sound by blowing (not vocalizing) and squeezing the straw with the lips until the two flaps (reeds) vibrate against themselves. It is technically a double reed. Oboes and basoons use double reeds.

It actually does work and is extremely loud and annoying once you go to the higher pitches (like one inch segment). You can also makes holes in the straw to change the pitch, like a recorder. But yes, this is not a kazoo nor is it even close to it. This is basically a "double reed" instrument which can only create one pitch. A kazoo gives the pitch depending what is being hummed.

what is really fun is to make the mouthpiece first and to cut the straw with the scissors while you are blowing it!

This way you'll hear the pitch go up a step with each cut... great fun.
