Isn't there an episode where the hunter comes back? And this time he has a camp with even more hunters backing him up? And in the end the whole camp burns down?
Ugh I'm only here to remember the TRUE and REAL Babar that was just 2D and simple. Not that crap thats on Disney (just found out that Disney did a re-make of this wonderful show) Trust me you don't want to see that series.
Those kids were largely unconcerned by a talking elephant using the play equipment and playing baseball. I think I'll just defer to SometimesIAmBored's comment =P
5:01 - Top of the mornin' to ye, talking elephant.
"Let's see... apples... bananas... dates... carrots..." No, actually, those are all just oranges >_>
Nobody seems the least bit surprised at the notion of a talking elephant, which implies everyone is aware that they can talk and think like humans, yet there are still people who hunt them?!
Babar is from Zamunda. If anyone remembers Eddie Murphy's "Coming to America" when he's walking with the King (JE Jones) a small elephant crosses his path and he says "Hello Babar" (LOL)
I know I'm probably looking into this way too much, but I still find it really, really strange how the elephants (and the other animals, for that matter) go from living in the jungle and walking on all fours to living in buildings and houses in the jungle and walking on two legs.
As a 20-year Babar fan, I sometimes wonder why, if he's from somewhere in Africa, does this look like he just walked into London or Amsterdam. Then I realized that that's not as weird as a talking elephant, so I gave up. The books were weird, the show was weird, but it was totally AWESOME!
Babar's not a political treatise. What it did was provide kids with role models, and lessons they could take with them into their lives - that's how my dad saw it when I was about 8-10. Unlike the newer cartoons, it didn't patronise children either, and assumed they were intelligent.

you are spot on, babar's not an apologia for colonialism - people analyze too much these days.
d2eux 2 years ago 2
i agree, what ever happened on the past is history, babar is not about colonialism, is about so much more valuable lessons.
