You're right about the underground stuff. There was this artist, Victor Moscoso, who appeared in ZAP comics who used to do these visually stunning, yet incomprehensible surrealist comics that were mind blowing.
@TheSubwaysurfer Undergrounds would be the opposite of realist or auto-bio comics. In fact you could call UGs a "surrealist" movement. Name your fantasy - sex, drugs, rock 'n'roll or whatever - the craziest dreams found their way into those head shop classics. Today's auto-bios are cool, but they're inherently limited by the borders of reality. In the bad old days, it was anything goes. The writing and art was better then, too.
