Just did the repair on my 2002 Sebring, great video. Only problem is now Chrsler has changed the resistor design so it will not fit in the original. The new resistor control is wider than the original. ( I checked the dealer was told this is a better design) In order to get it to fit you need to grind out the opening to make it fit. Dremel works great for this. Hope this helps someone.
Thanks for the great video. I did found the resistor but wasn't sure it was it before this video (i did have answer from finnish chrysler forum, but without picture or any specific information).
Literally I was watching this video at 8:35pm tonight, went to O'Reilly auto parts 8:50 pm. Headed home, it is now 9:15 pm and I have already switched out the resistor and the blower works again. I made this my birthday present to my fiancee. Easy. Thanks for the video! Part costs $77 with Tax
An addendum for those with automatic climate control: Skip Advance and O'Reilly - Amazon sells the Mopar OEM part for $60. it's Mopar part number 04885482AC.
This is great -- thank you. Indeed, automatic climate control uses a different, more expensive BWD RU1093, $72.99 at Advance Auto parts or O'Reilly. A post on a different message board mentioned that this replacement kills the AUTO HI/LOW capability in the climate-control system (there are 4 connectors on the OEM and only 3 on the BWD replacement). I called the local dealership and they have the OEM part in stock for $98.
I was wondering if you think this would fix the problem I am having with my 2004 caravan. Everything works as far as the fan speeds but the problem I am having is the heat. It works fine while driving but stops blowing hot air when you come to a stop or idle. The blower still blows air but turns cool when stopped. Any help would be Very appreciated. Its getting cold and I have 5 kiddos and a wife thats none to happy with hubby for not getting it fixed.
Thanks for sharing! I was able to replace one on a 2005 Dodge Caravan in a matter of minutes. Only cost $14.99 for the part. Your video made it extremely easy to replace. It's working just fine now!
Be careful, if you have the Automatic Climate Control (vs. the simple mechanical knobs and levers) the blower motor resistor power module needs to be used instead. Same instructions for replacement, but this module needs to be ordered from the dealer, or O'Reilly special order from Murray's (the manufacturer), at a cost of $80.
@22matthewlewis......Im having the same problem with my 2001 town and country, The back blows very good but the front wont blow at all. I watch another video and the guy said it may be the front blower Relay that is behind the fuse box on the driver's side. Havent got a chance to take a look at mine but let me know what you find out please
@409Realist Hey.. my van JUST started doing the same thing. Any idea if the resistor is the cause? Or do you have the other video? I have the 2001 and it's not the simple mechanical knob, but the automatic climate control so I'm worried it's going to ding me $80. Darn thing is falling apart.. although if the local junk yard has a similar model maybe I could scavenge. Just wondering what everyone else has discovered.
Great video, i was wondering why all of a sudden my jeep was only working on 4 and the rest was dead. Now i know that its the freaken blower motor resister..... thank you very much, that really save me time. I will get a new resister and replace the old one rite away. ONE QUESTION, how much will i spend on a new one? Please reply back, again great video helped me alot !!!!!
Wow, you saved my bacon! Thanks so much for the informative video. I was getting ready to set off for a long roadtrip in our 2001 Grand Caravan and noticed the blower wasn't working in the first 3 setting, only the loud blast setting. After basic troubleshooting of fuses and connections, I had pretty much gave up and was going to take it to the dealer. Watched your video and had it fixed in minutes for under $15.....Thanks so much.
Good video. While not a bad idea, disconnecting the battery is not necessary. Also it is impossible to get shocked by your standard 12v battery. Electric yes but for good old gas or diesel the gloves are unnecessary, the human body cannot sense current under about 50 volts.
Thanks for the post. The blower stopped working on my 07 Town and Country: First, it only worked on two speeds, then stopped completely. I'll try this relatively inexpensive fix before bringing it in to replace the entire motor.
I have a question, I saw the blue resistor on the side of the new one there, If that is the part that blows or goes bad, if you cant find a blower motor resistor for your car, couldnt a person with soldering skills just go to radio shack and get a resistor (equal to that of the one that was in it) to solder it and make it work?
I suspect I may be having blower resistor issues on my 2009 Ford Focus. It seems when the AC is on after a minute or 2 the blowers stop working. As well as when the temperature knob is on the blue side. And when the blower settings are on either 3 or 4 the blowers stop working after a half a minute to a minute no matter what temperature they are on. Someone said it may be a radiator related issue and I read the blower resistor could be the issue.
@wannawannastream The latest response I got back is that the switch may be over heating. I do know my dealership has a AC check thats around $49. I dont know exactly how it works. But hopefully it wont cost too much to have the Blower fixed on my car. I if I could easily get that section where the blower switch is off easily Id replace the switch on my own.
Thanks for posting this helpful video. I was able to complete the job in under 30 minutes. I would only offer that for vehicles with climate control, the correct part is going to run about $100. Still, I'm sure I saved $100 or more thanks to you!!!
Thanks for the video, but as for the battery, you dont need to wear gloves, you can hold both terminals all day long as its only 12-13volts which will not overcome your bodies resistance to ever hurt you, unless you soaking wet and standing in a bucket of water, ha ha, I will have to replace mine, just went out today
Hi i have a 2004 town &country where the back blower works fine but the front does not. I do have heat once the van is on the highway and going, but front blower does nothing on any setting. I checked it with a new motor and changed the relay still nothing .Will changing the resistor fix the problem ? I really dont want to put it in the shop if it's something i can fix myself.
Thanks for posting this. My problem was identical to your description. I bought the new resistor at my local auto parts store and replaced it. Now, every speed works BUT the top one. Wierd.. almost like the resistor only has 4 speeds and not five. The Auto parts store knew exactly what I wanted and even confirmed that my T&C had the manual A/C controls. I have the four lower speeds so I don't mind leaving like that but I wanted to post this in case anyone else had the same problem.
I first have to say excellent job with the instructions on the video. I replcaed it and now the fan speeds work great, however, when turning it on it now blows smoke out the vents and smells terrible l. Any idea what would cause this? What do you do now?

@Hagen747 your blower motor is going and overloading the resistor. this is common. you need a new blower motor and probably another resistor just like me. it is the new resistor that is smoking. you will notice it only smells on the low speeds which is when it would get hottest. the resistor has probably allready failed since you posted two weeks ago.
I first have to say well put together video. I did hoever install the new Blower Motor resistor. It worked in getting the speeds back however it started to blow smoke through the vents. Any idea what would cause that or what to do now?

I don't usually post comments but this one deserved it. It was so easy after seeing it on video. Thank you so much for taking the time to make such a simple video. In the long run you will have saved so many people thousands of dollars in total money saved. God bless you buddy and I hope good luck comes back to you tenfold. :-)
There's no air coming out of the vents so for sure it could be the blower motor, But what can cause it to stop working? Does anyone work on blower motor before? It's a 1992 Honda Accord
How hard is it to replace a blower motor?
What steps or procedure do I have to do? Any tips?
diamond12612 -- I would take out the resistor again -- look to see if something got bent or damaged. Perhaps it was screwed in too tight. Or if the resistor pack is in contact with something it probably should not be. Then I would replace the wire harness and see if it works now. If that didn't work, I would try the old resistor pack and see if that works as well as it did before. Good luck!
I replaced the resister as shown in the video. Hooked every thing back up and turned
on ignition switch .the blower worked fine on all speeds.I put tools away and got in van to go to town. I started the van and the blower would not work on any speed. I'm back to square one . Help or suggestions please.
The shop was gonna charge 100. which seamed low, so I went to Auto Zone and got the part for $12. put it in and will take my wife out to eat on the savings! Thanks
We just bought a 2003 Dodge Caravan. Same set up. This video was awesome. You should put out more fix-it-yourself videos. Makes some money too. Thank you for the great video.
I have been driving around with my 2003 dodge caravan having the blower only working on full for about 3 weeks now. After I watched this video I went out and got the part from Napa and was able to install it myself while my husband was at work. I am so thankful for this video. Great job and very easy to follow.
@axyl26 Dodge Caravan & Town and Country Owners: it's the bullet-shaped diode inside the metal cage he shows that goes bad (the others are nickel-chrome wire resistors coiled up). I soldered in a 30A 50V Schottky diode (2 diodes in a single TO-220 package that can be hooked up in parallel, actually) that I picked up at the electronics store for $4.00. Verify it's the diode gone bad by shorting across it on low, put your diode in the only way that makes the blower run at low speed, and solder.
I replaced the resistor today, The fan is working just fine. I have a 2001 Town and Country LXi with digital climate control, I am getting only cold air on the passenger side regardless of the temperature that I set but the driver side works fine, Any Ideas?
@manuelitro8 There is a plate on the bottom of the fan casing. In our case it had been removed and was never put back in properly. The plate eventually came off - simply screwed back on and voila - no cold air on the passenger side anymore
just finished replacing mine. it fixed the problem. after further investigation, my rear blower was working fine. just when you sit in the front seat you really can't hear it until it's on high. When I began looking into the extent of the problem, I determined it was only the front. Took 1/2 hour. I also took the time to blow off the filter in that cabinet. You access it from the bottom, you'll see it whenyou have the resistor out. Ours was quite dirty.
This must be a huge problem after 8 years. Both front and rear are out on mine. I am replacing the resistor today to see if it fixes both. Based upon my research, it seems I am dealing with 2 different problems, although that seems a bit odd.
great job---thank you --I need to do this on my '02 t&c---both front and rear blower motors only run on high--does that one resistor run both? or is there another board for the rear blower?
You rock! This saved us hundreds of dollars. Now . . . do you know how to fix the tailgate not opening? The motor works, but doesn't disengage the lock and the only way to open the tailgate is with the key.
I called the dealer and based on the last 4 numbers in my VIN number I purchased another resister. It worked without the burning wire smell. Cost $36.00, 10 more than a parts shop, but works. All resisters are not the same. Hope this helps.
Those symptoms don't sound like the same problem I fixed. Cool heat sounds like a thermostat. Intermittent blower motor could be this item. Good luck!
Sorry -- I don't really have an idea for you. If it's burning, and the harness is super hot, I would probably remove it. Sounds like you have a problem elsewhere.
@fatcatkaya Hey I had the same problem. Have you found out what the issue might be? another thing is that when i replaced it with the new kind, the 5th speed was the same speed at the 4th speed.
Thanks a billion for this video. My blower motor resistor went out on me on my 2003 town and country. Went to Car-X and quote to fix problem was $250. Googled how to fix this problem and run into this video which walked me through fixing this problem. Got the part from the dealership ship for about $25.00 and some tools from Big Lots for about $16. The work of replacing resistor took less than ten minutes. and Voila I saved myself more than 200 bucks.
Oh...May the blessings of all that is good, righteous and holy be upon you video producer man/woman (didn't listen - just watched) Turned this into a 10 minute job. Lol, course at this point I had most of the dash apart :( Next job I'm looking you up first. Many Thanks!
and if your doing it in the dark.....just leave the battery on, and the glove box light gives you light to work in :) and i did not have any sparks/ shocks.
That resistor is easy as hell to get to, the one in LH cars. ( Intrepid, Concorde etc ) are A BITCH. Pop down the glove box and its right there lol. Not in the Intrepid.
Hi! I have that problem with my T&C Lx 2003, but I saw that the resistor new was different to the old, is not a problem? coul you say me what mark is the replacement part? THANKS!
is the resistor held in place by screws? is it easy to remove/replace? I've gotten as far as unplugging the pig tailed wire bundles, but I was hoping you'd show removing and replacing the actual resistor.
awesome video you just save me a lot of googleling now i nkow where the resistor pack is locaded
thanks

Hope this helps.

will the same thing fix an intermittent blower motor and sometimes cool heat in my 2000 Dakota PU?
Jensagirl 2 years ago
Those symptoms don't sound like the same problem I fixed. Cool heat sounds like a thermostat. Intermittent blower motor could be this item. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip, I picked up the thermostat and some radiator flush that this guy told me to but now I guess I might get the resistor as well.
Thanks a bunch

After I finnished the job I smelled something burning ? It appears the wire harness coverings got hot. Any ideas?
fatcatkaya 2 years ago
Sorry -- I don't really have an idea for you. If it's burning, and the harness is super hot, I would probably remove it. Sounds like you have a problem elsewhere.

@fatcatkaya what did you find out on that burning of the resistor harness? let me know have the same problem. thanks...
catzmiao 2 years ago

Geez, did they give you a 'lube job' with that 200.00?
Maybe they were going to test motor amps, volts, or perform other troubleshooting, but sounds like a ream job to me.

That resistor is easy as hell to get to, the one in LH cars. ( Intrepid, Concorde etc ) are A BITCH. Pop down the glove box and its right there lol. Not in the Intrepid.

Hi, I fix the problem, just buy the part number: 04885583AB. In Mexico it cost 360 pesos, (about 30 dolars), it`s too easy.

is the resistor held in place by screws? is it easy to remove/replace? I've gotten as far as unplugging the pig tailed wire bundles, but I was hoping you'd show removing and replacing the actual resistor.
thanks, great video
