Also, I was in my acid phase at the time, which may mean all of what I just said was in my imagination, but I'm pretty sure about the album covers...
Love this song!!! I really dig the breaks when Page plays bluesy slide and then lets it ring when he picks up the tempo again. I heard Plant was furious after he heard this because Bonham and Page drowned out his singing in the first three verses. Overall, this is one of my all-time top ten favorites.
still trying to keep up with John Paul Jones on this one so far my Yamaha aint cuting it. one can just picture the words it comes alive. too great of a song. love it!
Most 70s rock songs make me grab my "air guitar." But most Zeppelin songs (like this) make me grab my "air drumsticks"! We still miss you, Bonzo! You were the greatest!
Not much needs to be said...this is one of my favorites...but hey, Led Zep still sets the standard 40+ years after they first made music history as a band, and showed so many others "how it's done"! When I'm gone from this life, several Led Zep tunes will mark the farewell ceremony for my friends. This is one of them. Perfect! Long live Led Zeppelin! ;-)
JPJ did a damn good job here on this album. Kudos to him. This song carries a unique sound to Zep- with of course the classic recognizable Bonzo drumming style
I can only imagine the ambiance when recording this in the dead of winter in Polar Studios in Stockholm. They really got some unique sounds out of the studio. By all credible accounts, Jonesey really did hold this album together as the others were out of it in one way or the other.
this has always been my least fav lep lp, but i havent listened to it in years. but dam that change at 4:25, just classic zep that could have been on physical graffiti. so with that said, im putting this album back in my zep line up.
i always wish there was more, but i wonder what they would have sounded like through the 80s. i cant think of any band that held it together musically during that time. maybe it is better that they never jumped the shark
@photoslum Great observations! Can you believe Keith Richards has dissed Zeppelin the way he has (at least in public interviews)? I can only chalk it up to jealousy! I saw them in '77 in St. Louis at the Checkerdome. Will never forget it!
@photoslum The change at 4:25 was classic Bonham; playing an instrument rather than just keeping time and making noise. We'll never know what their music would have become other than hints from their subsequent solo careers and Page/Plant. One thing for sure is they would have survived and continued to shape the rock scene. I'm thankful I got to see them in Indianapolis, 1977. Pure ethereal magic.
When Robert sings, "I heard the word !!!...." ....you can just FEEL that Jimmy has 50 Marshall stacks all turned up to 11, NOT direct lined in but with microphones.
THAT was one of the keys to their sound. No digital crap, not too often direct line-in.... but microphone placement !
ok let's settle this right now, led zeppelin was heavy enough to possibly be considered a lighter metal band, BUT they weren't metal AT ALL because metal is defined as being based off tri tones (look it up) while led zeppelin is strictly a band that took blues rock in every direction it could. Led Zeppelin used BLUES ROCK, and some of it was heavy but none of it was ever metal. That being said Zeppelin was amazing!
@mbreaux72 Led Zeppelin can't really be classified as a gemre. There songs all sounded different. They are reffered to as a Metal band because there dominant sound was Heavy. It is a fact that they started Heavy Metal. Your listening to their softer stuff if you really want to see their heavy side listen to Kashmir, When the Leevee Breaks, Immigrant song, Dazed and Confused and loads more.
The reason this album was so heavily influenced by Jones and Plant where the only ones showing up on time to the studio while Page and Bonham were dealing with chemical issues. This gave Jones and Plant a lot of time to write together. This type of sound was probably the future direction of LZ.
This album was John Paul Jones' album. A lot of good bass rythms and keyboards unlike other Zepplin records. This being their last album and most of the members disjointed, Jones held this all together and pretty much produced the album, and it turned out damn well.
@999klondike Yes, your on the spot. One of their best, and most unusual, albums. Robert Plant contributed too, though, I believe... Really it was a success in its entirety! Some of the band members will disagree, Jimmy in particular; but as it is said, the album the members 'had a problem with' is often the best! My vote: Either this, or "Houses of the Holy"... @999klondike Very well said! Page was all hung up on drugs and black magic during the making of this album. So, SOMEBODY had to take over the reins. Leave it to Jonesy to step up to the plate! Ty, JPJ!
When someone says a song is one of the greatest musical compositions ever, they're usually exaggerating. This is not the case for Carouselambra. Young people of today NEED to hear this kind of music before they listen to anything else they deem "great" music. Listen at 4:02 for the transition. Beautiful.
@MrMephistopheles666 - couldn't agree more. It's definitely my favorite part of such a classic song. Music of today could only dream to produce music half as good as this. Such a sad state today.
I'm not a big Zep fan but I think this is a great track, can't undertsand why some Zep fans knock it. A few rock bands are lucky to have a great muscian on bass who come up with some class tracks, Zep have JPJ who is a class act.....they're you go a neutral voice for once. PS if they did this live with stairway, kashmir, immigrant song, rock n' roll and a few others I'd be more than happy to buy a ticket. It's there more 'earthy' tracks that have me dazed and confused.
As far as what album this song was on if I recall it was the last song of Zeps last album...and I guess that would be an appropiate tribute to BONZO who as always did some nice percussion on this esp. the ending.RIP

i had heard the reason for the plethora of keyboards on this album was cuz page was deep into his heroin addiction while recording. can anyone confirm or deny this allegation? bullshit or not? just curious
@pdurks1 I think I remember reading that in the book by Richard Cole, 'Hammer of the Gods' (1987) Page does look completely out of it at Knebworth in 80. (and, lots of mistakes are made by Page for the more discerning fan). So, from this Zeppelin fan, all signs point to Jones taking more of a lead role.
This song is in all honesty, art, and most of their songs are, the lyrics I mean, you just don't hear poetry like this at all...really from anyone in the music industry. This is truly art.
It was 1987, I was driving my mom's Mazda 626 GT Turbo around Atlanta as a highschool kid, fully addicted to Led Zeppelin, but nobody in high school would have ever known, I didn't fit that profile. I was infatuated with a girl (Jane) that would barely speak to me (actually wouldn't really) and then there was this song, the coolest non-physical material item in my life. Caroselambra holy Moses what a fantastic piece of music.
My friends and I had set up plans for who was going to camp out for the US tour tickets in Denver. I wasnt gonna miss this tour! This song would have been great live!
@zepelindeplomo This is from Wikipedia... "The name Carouselambra is a reference to the first section of the song sounding similar to carousel music. "
I've listened to this song about 9 times tonight. I've come to the conclusion that this is probably one of the greatest songs ever recorded. Have you sung the lyrics with the song? Waterworks, man. Waterworks. I think I'll listen to it again.
I took the day off to be at MUSIC+ when it opened so I could be the first to get this album....my neighbor and I listened to it over and over and over ALL day long.......it still sounds as good as it did then......timeless.......!!
"The lyrics are largely beyond comprehension and are left open to interpretation. Plant proclaimed that they deliberately hid a mystical intention aimed at a specific person who will one day discover their meaning" - wow, Now that's something to think about.
@HardAsARock222 Yes, these lyrics are definitely something to think about.... especially considering the state of the personal relationships in the band at that point in time. But maybe that's just MY female interpretation... I'm sure others see it much differently (as Percy probably intended).
Whenever I hear this song l always think back to passing out in a sleeping bag next to my motorcycle (an old Yamaha RD 400 twin) on a chilly night at a pig roast in Italy Valley, New York in 1982. There was this couple in a car next to me going at it while In Through The Out Door was blasting away on their stereo.
although this is not your typical zep song... i think this is a work of art and masterpiece because no one else could come up with this. The lyrics will make your head swim.
This was supposed to be the show opener for the 1980-81 tour.............John Paul Jones' true majestic anthem. i still wish i knew what the song is about.
The Beatles made me feel like I could play music... Zeppelin assured me that I could not. I always wish this song would never end. I can't imagine a band equaling this song today... or nearly any from their catalogue.
Often copied--never outdone. So it is with Plant, Page, J P Jones & Bonham; The BEST stay that way because they simply are...THE BEST! ;-) Robert Plant & Jimmy page are even today still amazed at how successful and long-lived the awesome phenomenon of Led Zeppelin has been and continues to be, well into the 21st century, and still looking forward--->, rocking on at full throttle, as only Led Zeppelin does! Carouselambra, Kashmir, Ten Years Gone, Stairway To Heaven, and so many, many more!
I have excellent memories of this song in the early 1990's. I was in university studying for exams. Cramming a lot of information during the last few days....I tried to stay awake with Zeppelin playing in my bulky headphones in my parent's house. Basically I did a couple of all nighters with this song playing over and over too keep me awake. I did graduate...but what I studied during those nights is a complete blur. My mind was basically in a state of a carousel. :-)
@mattdaddyful carouselambra is like a book... a story... you can hear it a thousand times and you will find always a new hidden sound that blows off your mind...God i love led zeppelin
Truly the most under-rated song in the Led Zeppelin catalog. Take of the fruit , but guard the seed. The lyrics are very "Rush" like. It's not surprising that Robert Plant once said Geddy Lee was one of the few musicians he looked up to.
wouldn't easlily get played on the radio because of its length but really ought to be. A DYNAMIC 10minute+ aural journey. I think the way it should be put is that LZ sets the stage for some great 1980s hard rock (RUSH & VAN HALEN) being the primary example). When Bonham died, LZ folded. R PLANT had made music indicative of where LZ could go. Not quite the same as LZ but really XLNT in its own way.
I know that this proceeded the loss of John Bonham who was irreplaceable, but what if they would have continued. What direction would they have gone? And how would they have influenced the 80's? I mean AC/DC kept going as did others. What an awesome tune, never hear radio play for this! Jonesy was the man!
@stevenj967 Jimmy has said that he and bonham discussed the album that would follow In Through the Out Door and that it would get back to the heaviness of their early years.
@MrDurden30 Absolutely. I remember just BOLTING to the record store the day this came out and getting home and thinking WTF??? (Ironically I only loved "Hot Dog" which was so wonderfully campy). In truth they were largely done by "Presence" but that was kind of masked by two GREAT songs, Nobody's Fault But Mine and Achilles Last Stand.
Why is everyone relating this song to Jimmy Page's problems and beliefs? Robert Plant and John Paul Jones influenced most of this album because they were the clean ones at the time.
@deviantzx its true... robert and j.p.j. were going through a really tough time not just because of jimmy being on heroin and bonzo drinking but also because robert was in a car accident and his son died. robert and j.p.j. were really trying hard and scraping the bottom for good music. that's why there were no leading riffs or spectacular guitar or drum solos on this album. however this album tells more of a story in that sense.
Had this album. Also, I had to buy a few of them because this album has multiple covers, but I never did find them all. Came in a brown paper cover, and you got one of 6 potential album covers. (Like the one above). Also, if you wet the the sleeve of the album jacket, it changed colors. My favourite Zeppelin song. 10 minutes of pure earcandy. Can't think of fancier words right now ;)

It would have been interesting to have heard Supertramp record this.

Is it true that this song was used for the closing credits when MTV first came on the air?

always thought this was an odd song especially for zeppelin 30 years and i still cant stop listening to it.

Without a doubt, the most underated song from the masters!!

the only mistake in your words is that the band sold 300 000 000 albums

I have excellent memories of this song in the early 1990's. I was in university studying for exams. Cramming a lot of information during the last few days....I tried to stay awake with Zeppelin playing in my bulky headphones in my parent's house. Basically I did a couple of all nighters with this song playing over and over too keep me awake. I did graduate...but what I studied during those nights is a complete blur. My mind was basically in a state of a carousel. :-)

wutangbonham 6 months ago
Truly the most under-rated song in the Led Zeppelin catalog. Take of the fruit , but guard the seed. The lyrics are very "Rush" like. It's not surprising that Robert Plant once said Geddy Lee was one of the few musicians he looked up to.
mr5exywolf 6 months ago
,,I thought it was "take on the fruit but not the seed", so did Getty give him these lyrics ?,,lol

@PupuTheClown the lyrics are under where it says show more, genius? Lol. Plus its Geddy clown. LZ.>Rush, Wolf much > pupu. Peace.

wouldn't easlily get played on the radio because of its length but really ought to be.

Jonesy was the man!
stevenj967 6 months ago 2

Robert Plant and John Paul Jones influenced most of this album because they were the clean ones at the time.
deviantzx 7 months ago
@deviantzx its true... robert and j.p.j. were going through a really tough time not just because of jimmy being on heroin and bonzo drinking but also because robert was in a car accident and his son died. robert and j.p.j. were really trying hard and scraping the bottom for good music. that's why there were no leading riffs or spectacular guitar or drum solos on this album. however this album tells more of a story in that sense.
