No limit. And with choppered in crews to replace blown out engines and what not, at the end of 1986 Lancia and Audi were running ~680 reliably. Over 1000 when they wanted to push it.
The car Lancia was developing for 1987 was an evolution of the Delta S4 but with a completely new engine. A ingenious twin-turbo row 4 called the "Triflux". It was not sequanlly, but parallel turbocharged. Having two small quickly spooling turbos which could rev far faster than ordinary ones it was rated at 600bhp. Group-B was to be replaced with Group S on 1987 and Group B moved to the track because of crowd control. The Triflux could've easily produced 1200 horses of you wanted to push it.
Not close to 500 hp, but more than 500 lol, lancia got 550 example, and on Estoril track Toivonen made time wich could place him on 6th on F1 start at same year there ^^

@kiarakris You are correct. The supercharger has much quicker response than the turbocharger, but the turbo performs better higher up the rev range. Having both is called compound charging. Not many cars have had this, I can only think of two in fact. The S4 and the Micra SuperTurbo, yes really. :p
@MediaWML: The supercharger is for instant (=no lag) low + mid rev torque followed by the Turbo for peak power (with the typical 80s lag in this case). Most common nowadays in VAG 1.4 TSI engines with 160~185hp.

not really a fair comparison because the new WRC's are limited by the new rules (1.6l engine, restrictors, minimum weight requirements and maximum safety!) hell, in WRC they even outlawed boxer engines hence why Subaru is no longer competing - took me a year to find out that fact....
Group B would have had missiles like this in 1987, but instead it was lumbered with 300 bhp boredom-mobiles. And now WRC is dying on it's feet. FIA = morons.
