That sounds correct. Wrap the long end around its adjacent loop, resulting in the side with the bead remaining free. To add the next link, put the short end into the loop with the bead, place a bead on the long end, and wrap the long end.

how do i keep from scratching the wire with my pliers?

I use jewelry needle nose and round nose pliers to make this link. The needle nose are smooth, so they don't scratch the wire.
