  • I am looking at getting a contrabass clarinet, after playing the Bass clarinet for 5 years...advice?

  • :0 is that a rosewood Selmer Bbb Contra Bass Clarinet....OMG my school has one of those and i have the pleasure of playing on it for the next 2 years i was wondering if you had any tips for me i hope you respond to this

  • wow what beautiful tone you have. i have to disagree with everyone else, i can hear the clarinet perfectly fine even with the added music in the background. the music is a little scary in a good way.

  • How much of a change is this from a regular Bb bass clarinet? thats what i play now and i 've been wanting to make the switch.

  • I think it would be cool to get all the lowest instruments together and make music.

  • That's really a gorgeous instrument!

  • i think he should march :)

  • is that a Selmer Paris Model 41???

  • Makes me wish I still played clarinet. I mostly played a standard Bb soprano in school, but I must admit that I really enjoyed bass, too. I don't specifically recall playing contrabass, but somehow I remember having to look around an instrument to see my sheet music, on a couple occasions.

    *looks again at clarinet prices*

  • wtf X Files . Comment about good tone quality ?? Bipolar music :D

  • gotta love selmer paris man...

  • 1:55 ....... um im just curious.... why did you puff your cheeks?....

just wondering if you did it on purpose.. if not... gotta work on that XD

and i am going to play contrabass for a school concert sometime soon... but for now im stuck with my bass clarinet <.<, but i must say! nice playing!

  • @Icefire6324 why does it matter? i dont think you can tell him what to do. i dont think you can teach him anthing on this subject.

  • @venskus2009

i can still voice my opinion though.... it dosnt matter if he see;s it or not, just matters to me that this comment is made

  • @Icefire6324 omg youre another one of those people who bitches about opinion? yes you have your own opinion but when you say it to sound like youre better, or know what youre doing more then the video person, youre not voicing youre opinion. youre just being ignorant.

  • @venskus2009

lol whatever... if you think that then i cant convince you otherwise =/

  • Really a great sound! Does anybody know where I can find the score of this music?

  • hi marco -- gorgeous playing! is that the Selmer rosewood model? Does it go to low C? Thanks.

  • hi marco -- gorgeous playing! is that the Selmer rosewood model? Does it go to low C? Thanks.

  • Yum yum in my tum tum thats a selmer model 41. The only completely in tune contrabass i can think of. Let alone the best sounding one by far and away. Lol selmer FTW

  • Marco eres un master ojala un dia fueras a la universidad de jazz de xalapa Mexico a dar una clinica, mucho mas exito, saludos!!!

  • is that a selmer model 41?

  • that was amazing...i want to play the contrabass clarinet in my highschool band but my band director wont let me :(

  • @IntoxicatedByBeauty9 If its a B-Flat Contrabass, then yeah it makes sense. There arent many parts for it. Now if its a E-Flat Contrabass, then finding parts for it is easy(just read tuba parts.).

  • damn and i thought playing the Eb countrabass is hard

  • Love this one ;)

  • wow! this is cool! good job. I have a contra alto.

  • Marco, how tall are you? About 4'10" ?

  • What a let down of a clip. It's all smoke and mirrors and little actual clarinet. And when you DO hear it, it's obscured behind a bunch of annoying other tracks.

Make a clip showing what the actual instrument can do. Lose the rest of the unnecessary filler.

  • Is there a much sound difference between a paperclip one or rosewood one ?

  • OMG, tell me you have a neckstrap or something on. Your tone quality is impressive, I have only the vaguest idea of how hard it is to maintain a nice sound with contralto. A m a z i n g.

  • Actually yes, I do have a neck-strap (the ones they hold from your back). Thanks for your nice words, I enjoy very much playing the contrabass clarinet (if you are curious, check my video "Himno al sol", also with contrabass clarinet).

  • @deathweaselx86 Thank you so much!!!

  • at least i can sit down and play my bass clarinet. you have to stand. HA

  • me 2

  • at least he can reach a lowlow C with his contrabass clarinet. you have only a low C. HA

  • My dad plays the LeBlanc Paperclip Contrabass Clarinet which is weighs a lot lighter than the Selmer Rosewood model.

  • with all of the other shit, I can hardly hear the clarinet \.

  • Two Words: SIZE QUEEN

  • were u accualy playing? u was swaying. i saw that. no sound came out. try using more air

  • Sir... You suck at listening music.

  • @totaldramaisland456 What the hell?

  • Wow! How do you do those percussion and ambiance effects on your bass clarinet?!?! Amazing! Multiphonics to the MAX

  • lol

  • WOW you can carry that beast hahah rite on :D I WANT ONE!!!!

  • I love the contra clarinet since, very young, I heard the 5 pieces for orchestra of Schoemberg. Esta muy bien tocado, groso.

    F.

  • Hard to hear at certain times, but other than that quite nice.

  • Wow...on so many levels. This is a beautiful, and deceptively simple, piece. People, unfamiliar with the low clarinets, have no idea the amount of control it takes to produce the smooth tone that you are so adept at. Thank you for sharing your talent with us. Also, I think it's great that you encourage the students who are commenting on your videos. :)

  • I'm bustin' out the contra tomorrow in band. Wish me luck.

  • That was wonderful! You have amazing control and tone over the Contrabass. This is easily the best Contrabass video on Youtube. I'm currently playing a Bb Bass Clarinet in my high school's band, and am hopefully going to play Contrabass next year. Hopefully I can get just as good a tone out of it is you...with practice of course =)

  • Thank you, I appreciate your words!

  • @timma1083 I'm in the 6th grade and I'm currently playing the bass clarinet :3!

and I'm going to switch to contrabrass next year hopefully!

  • omg! how tall is it? I play bassoon and im just taller than it this year!

  • Wow,that must take some air! Really nice tone, it sounded great! I'm a saxophone player so I don't know as much about clarinets, but that was great. When I play such low notes It's tough for me to keep them controlled and deep. Nice job again! :]

  • first of all you are amazing at the contrabass clarinet, i play it pretty good but nowhere as good as you, you have amazing control over the tone and its just awesome

  • for me, is horrible! very bad.

  • u have a piece of shit in your hear.

  • You have excellent control and tone. I recently switched from Bb Clarinet to Bb Bass Clarinet. Do you have any tips, especially concerning embouchure?

  • the selmer contrabass clarinet is the most beautiful instrument i have ever seen

  • You have a beautiful tone...I play bass clarinet and I am a sophomore in college, and I've always wanted to play contrabass...are there any pointers that you can give me for high and low notes...I would greatly appreciate it...

  • Thank you... I will contact you in private to talk about the contrabass clarinet. Thanks for your comment!

  • Amazing. One of the few contra videos on youtube. Great sound and control.

  • wow, amazing. i play bass clarinet in high school and plan to get a contrabass by sophomore/junior year of college. there is one word for contrabass clarinets: wicked. still, this is AMAZING! just wondering, does the contrabass have the same fingerings as a bass clarinet?

  • The composition is wonderful....as if you were wandering into some uncharted territory... Perhaps some deep underwater journey... You present amazing control for playing such a massive reed instrument. I played this myself, but never had the chance to play work like this. Seeing this made me wish to turn the clock back 10 years so I could play in high school.

  • Thank you! I love this piece too...and the contrabass clarinet.I hope you can still find some time to play. Greetings

  • is it heavy

    lol

  • beautiful :D

  • I play the contrabass clarinet at my school. I was wondering if there are any good fast pieces out for a contrabass clarinet for like a solo piece? A response would be great!

  • this is very nice. i play the contra alto clarinet. also very "deep". :)

  • A beautiful instrument that I've never seen.

A very moody sound. I love it.

  • Thanks for your kind comment!

  • i play the regular bass clarinet but thats huge

  • giant instrument

  • You should play this live on a stage somewhere, this piece IS on an epic scale....

    infinity stars.

  • thank you!!!!

  • I played my school contrabass clarinet in 8th Grade. It's very old and we had to use tape to make it work but it was pretty fun to play.

  • I play the Bass Clarinet for school, I am actually wondering if I change the Controbass Clarinet, well it make a difference?

  • Oh yes, I think you will enjoy a lot the contrabass clarinet - at least give it a try!

  • very cool.....

  • Thanks!

  • esta impresionante su clarinete contrabajo...

como le habra invertido para comprarlo porque se que estan caros!!

esta muy bien ese clarinete la verdad... me gustaria tener uno clarinete contrabajo...

    daria lo que fuera...jajaja

  • Perfectly fitting title. Fantastic sense of atmosphere.

  • I love the Bass Clarinet OMG I'm never playing the Contrabass Clarinet because I won't be able to reach the keys.

  • arent they just right in the middle, with like, metal going up to the actual holes?

  • Yo tengo obras de cuarteto arreglados por usted... que emocionante...

  • Gracias por tu comentario!

  • Hmmmmm, i would love to see the composer, you, and Mike Patton in a studio together. I think the results would shock the hell out of everyone.

  • That sounds interesting...

  • how can you play it while holding it! i need to rest it on the ground

  • my computer is messing up, i cant directly reply anymore...sry bout that

  • wow... what a beautiful instrument!

thank you for sharing this with us :D

i play clarinet and i hope to one day be able to play all the instruments in the clarinet family :)

  • what size reed is he using, im using a 3 1/2 but thats cause i can't find any 4's or higher

also what kind of mouthpiece is he using? im using a selmer but its not producing the right tone

  • Hi Williams. I'm using a Leblanc mouthpiece but it has been opened and treated in Germany. I use Vandoren 2 1/2 reeds - those go very good with my mouthpiece. My ligature is BG. To play with a stronger reed not always improve the sound - have you tried a very soft reed, like N°2? You can be surprised...thanks for asking!

  • hey thanks,

i'll try those reeds out once i can afford them, i only can find contrabass reeds online and for the box of 10, it cost me about 50 dollars w/ shipping

    BBb Contrabass

oh by the way, i got a wierd fact, i have several silver woodwinds from the 1920-1930's that all still work, i still hav to find pads for my '36 silver military clarinet, and a couple of springs for the '23 alto sax. the '39 contra just got back from the shop from a slight leak up top.

  • Is this available on cd?

  • Thanks for your kind comment. If you check the composer's website, you will find a CD which contains "Deep" but the original version (contrabasson & electronics). I have not recorded this piece on CD...yet. Thanks for watching!

  • Bravo! Wonderful use of effects.

  • El video es muy bueno, pero deberias ponerlo un poco más alto de volumen para poder escucharlo con más claridad

  • So beautiful, wonderful music and great performance!

  • i play sax but im renting a bass clarinet out next week from my school. it looks like a lot of fun to play.

  • I'm sure you will have a lot of fun with it - the bass clarinet has a very warm sound. Enjoy it!

  • I must say that after hearing the Contrabass Clarinet in my school band I have always wanted to try it. I currently play the Bass Clarinet and seeing this makes me want to play it all the more :D

  • i used to play that in high school! my favorite instrument!

  • Today I heard again this piece. I really love the atmosphere created by the electronic sounds, and the colour of the contrabass clarinet is just perfect. I hope one day to be able to play as god as you! Congratulations to Alex and Marco.

  • I totally wish I could play that piece...but the LeBlanc contra I'm playing on now has a few too many issues for it to be possible. Cool piece though!

  • Oh, BTW, how much does that puppy weigh?

  • I have no idea...my guess is between 6 and 8 kilos.

  • Good guess; the contra Bb with the low C that I played was right at 9 kilos.

  • do u know how much a bari sax weighs?

  • I have a very old Bb Bari made in france 1925, it is a lot lighter than most bari cause of the short bell, and the keys are not protected with huge metal pieces like modern sax. Then it if it still weights around 15 pounds, I like it a lot since I play a lot on the street and used it in a marching band, so nice tone and not much heavier than a tenor. But if you get a modern bari with lower A you can add around 10 pounds.

  • Cool super cool, amazing instrument and a great performer. Love the music!!!!!

  • Thanks to everyone for the great responses-- Marco does and AMAZING job with my piece and he's a superb musician! I'm so happy to have crossed paths with him.

    Cheers,

    Alex Shapiro

  • you handle that thing as if it was a soprano clarinet... do you play contra alto clarinet as well?

  • Mmmm...no, I dont play contra alto clarinet - I think I know very little repertory for that instrument. And you, do you play contralto? Thanks for watching!

  • I do play contra-alto clarinet... In fact, I march that thing in parades

  • what kind of contrabass is it a selmer? if so damn those are upwards of $20,000!!!

  • You are correct, its a Selmer...and quite expensive!

  • haha :D that's cool. John legend is my favorite artist :D! i saw another film on youtube were you play with others :O! that was really Amazing :D! Keep it up !

  • Thanks again for watching!!!!

  • kinda scary sound :) real cool :D btw.. did anyone ever told you that you look like john legend without hair.

  • I will add the name John Legend to my nick name's list on the internet! thanks for your comment!

  • The best sound! Great movie..

  • lo habia escuchado antes. Muchas gracias por compartir esta musica, y que vengan mas videos!

  • genial, que instrumento tan calido, nunca

  • Very inspiring! great job

  • Hm, this music brought me a deep meditation. Feels so good. Congratulations to the composer and the musician. I also love the videoclip a lot.

  • Hi Marco,

I play contra alto and contrabass clarinet too and I apreciate so much your job/ videos, I want to see more videos of contrabass clarinet on youtube.

Do you have videos that you play the contrabass with others clarinets??

    Thanks

    Ricardo

    From Brazil

  • Hi Ricardo! I think I don't have any video playing contrabass with other clarinets (quartets, quintets), except the ones in Clariperu. Search Clariperu in YouTube and I play in "Bach: Toccata and Fugue", "Rikudim" and "Tango for 2 bass clarinets". In those clarinet choir videos I am the contra clarinettist! Thanks for your kind comment!

  • Very beautiful, I really love the contrabass clarinet. Good job promoting it and congratulations to Alex Shapiro for the great music.

  • Thanks!!

  • The audio is much better, and again congratulations excellent work (I like very much the music)
