  • oh yea

  • How did you get away with using Batman in a Disney thing?

  • @Mavericker7 No logo

  • This is a quote from "Hook"!

  • Woah, looking at the comment up there...just cause he's 25 doesn't mean he doesn't know about animation. o_O Age has nothing to do with it.

I agree on the stilted animation in the beginning, but you did a good job overall at capturing Genie's movements, although it's more simplified. Genie isn't an easy character to animate because of his constant motion.

  • @Skarlis I can see you are 23 so of course my comment will make you a little insecure. But how ever sorry I can be that it does..it is fact..Your final coments about Genie not being easy because of his 'constant motion' are testament to that. I needent elaborate . If both of you are serious about animation I shall wait until you have gained a few years to bother discussing the finer points of animation with you.... Thanks for your comments.

  • @eubasaban Wow, really? How old will I have to be then, 40? I am very serious about animation, worked on projects and with many animators, and once again, my age doesn't matter. I would have said the same thing if the commenter was 93 years old and if you were to say "You're too old to understand the beauty of animation..." There are many fantastic animators out there who are even younger than I am. Don't be so judgmental on that tiny detail; focus on the actual talent.

  • @Skarlis

I never claimed one is too old or young to understand beauty. i merely rejected a coment from an enthusiatic youth. and I still do so.Everyone has the right to an opinion which is worthy of respect in the most basic human formality. A streetsweep can have an opinion about the solar system - I respect that but I dont regard it as a professional or mature opinion. I'll focous on opinions that I recognise come from people that understand my buisness. Best of luck with your animation .

  • @eubasaban Well I'm guessing your getting beaten by some younger fresh new talent and that is whats made you so bitter. I know a lot of young animators who are easily just as good as some of the older guys. Sure more experience is always better. But with the wonder that is the internet, knowledge is a lot more accessible, which in turn speeds up the learning process. At the end of the day it comes down to how driven that person actually is.

  • @Goalieells The thing with animation, film or any art form, everyone has an opinion. Whether they are educated in what you specialise in or not, they are the audience and they know if somethings not right. I'm suprised you get any work with that sort of attitude,

Concerning the animation. I think its great. I don't really like how the right hand changes from the point up to the "no brain" It starts to rotate one direction then back on itself when it comes back into shot..

  • @Goalieells Who said anything about me being bitter kid I just like to put pretentious youths in place-added to that its precisely my attitude that gets me work As I have moved from mere animation to supervisory roles. you as an audience are entitled to your opinions -but if you point them out to me I am entitled to laugh at them- thats not bitterness its arrogance that I hold with pride. As to being 'beaten' down by young fresh talent -dream on kid! excuse me now I ve got a tv show to board...

  • @eubasaban tv show.....congrats

  • @Goalieells

    Many thanks :)

  • Sounded like jack spicer from xiaolin showdown.

  • Not bad at all, considering this is a one man show coloring and all. If you were to ask me for my harshest criticism I'd say yeah - push your poses, go over the top. Theres real potential here, I'd hire you.

  • That parmiceam quote is from Hook.

  • I can see why they didnt go with you no offence. Genie here isnt nearly as expressive as Goldberg;s. Animation is also a little stilted at the beginning

  • @jayrobson88

None taken - your only 25 - Thanks for the feedback.

  • Whoa that was really good and funny! Creative & clever using Robin William's line from Hook. This is really cool, great job!

  • @wizardwarrior713

Thank you kindly! I thought Williams was fantastic in Hook and he played that role around a similar time to Aladdin so everything seemed to match with regards to his delivery and such. Thanks for watching!

  • Every time I watch this I can't help but laugh. Great job!

  • @DamianGarcia92

    Thankyou kindly!

  • That's really good! But how long did it take to make this?

  • Batman.

  • did they choose you? I've seen the actual finished commercial, were you the one who animated the genie? and another question, why didn't they just get Eric Goldberg to do it?

  • Thanks for your interest! No I did not animate the final piece. to the best of my knowledge they did use the great Goldberg to do it in the end. I think he was working on the movie Back in Action when it was being planned. I believe No one could do a better job than him he is the Genies father! and in my opinion one of the greatest animators in the world.

  • Oh, too bad, your animation looks great, but I agree with you, no one could do a better job than him.

  • Oh if you answer send me a message, thanks.

  • Hello I have a few drawings I have which I would like to make into a pencil test. Tell me what kind of camera and program would I need? I am an ametur who wants to make some animation movments with my characters.

  • @CrimsonNineTail

you can use a webcam or a camera(you need to ask before you shoot), and Digicel Flipbook

  • Dude this is AMAZING!!!

  • how did you do this from the pencil test?

  • The pencil Test is drawn up to a fine clean line known as clean up..at home you can scan the drawings in and colour them though a basic paint package.. by selecting the areas and filling them in Hope that helps :)

  • U used audio from hook, didn't you? Thats brilliant!

  • Many thanks! yes the audio was indeed taken from that fantastic movie :)

  • Great stuff here. Alot of effort and work put into it.

  • Many thanks!

  • This looks like a deleted scene from Aladdin! Very good work. If I may, did you draw this on paper, or in computer. Did you ink and paint yourself? If so, what program? Lastly how long have you been animating?

  • Thankyou kindly! Yes this was done on paper I have posted the original pencil test up as well... It was originally pitched as a pencil test..but I couldnt resist cleaning it and colouring it..that was done in the machine with a standard paint programme.I have been an animator professionaly for 9 years now..though i been playing with animation since I was a kid thanks for asking :)

  • which paint program, like Photoshop?

  • Yes indeed !

  • I LOVE IT!

  • Thankyou kindly for watching :)

  • wow great to see this in color! ^_^

  • Many thanks my friend!

  • Thankyou very much! I enjoyed your short film about the job very much! It reminded me of that famous ball sequence in Sesme street. Keep it up the more of us that pursue and persist with hand drawn animation the greater its chance of survival! I do not object to computer animation but I don't see why only one can exist and the other must be cast into oblivian! But obviously as a draftsman my passion will always remain in traditional.

  • I am an aspiring 3d games animator, and to be honest., I love all forms of animation. but the thing is that the computer is a tool, like a pencil and paper, a foam or plasticine puppet, or any other animating tool. There is just as much thought put into animating with a computer as there is with a pencil. And there is a place for ALL forms of animation. You don't blame the tool, you blame the delivery. Pixar put just as much effort into animation as Hayao Miyazaki.

  • Hi I never claimed that it takes less effort to animate well in the computer.I have worked in CG. I do not blame CG for the decline in 2d but a combination of poor public taste and companies after box office. Though I will say that drawn animation requires a greater understanding of the basic principles as there is no smooth spline to save your arcs. but at the top level that isnt an issue as the same high principles are expected in CG. great animation is great animation whatever the medium.

  • Oh, I know that you did not suggest that, but someone else in responding to your work did suggest that traditional is superior to CG. I feel that traditional is great, but I love Claymation and CG just as much, as they all blow my mind in terms of the levels of imagination. They all have challenges, and they all have weaknesses. Again it comes down to the delivery and not the artistic medium. If I could, I would work in film, but at the moment video games seem to be my calling.

  • i think for Disney, if you want classic fairy-tales, then traditional is preferred....as in the way it looks, not amt of work put in (any form of art takes a lot of work)....but the new cg stuff is great for touching and empowering messages.......so...overall...they equal out....because they are used for different things....

  • I am inclined to agree with you, especially looking at the new Princess and the frog trailer. But with Shrek doing a similar thing and being successful, we'll have to see. That said I don't like Shrek, but love those Disney Fairytale films. I didn't bother to see Brother Bear or Home on the Range, as I knew I would hate em.

  • however home on the range was halfway decent.....brother bear.....was a nice try.....i really hope that the bear and the bow is handdrawn too...because it is based on my two favorite fairy-tale authors.....anyhow....to recap....art is art and it aint easy no matter who tries to pass it off as a way of slacking.

  • Nice! I am planning to study animation this coming fall semester when I enter college, and hopefully can get a job with Disney (I love 2d animation more than 3d). Keep up the good work!

  • Thankyou friend. I wish you all the best with your endeavours. For me 2d animation will always have more heart and sould than 3d and its a terrible loss that Disney has abandoned it's heritage I hope for all our sakes that if the Frog princess fails they will still attempt to continue making 2d movies. Best of luck to you!

  • XDDDDDD lmao! epic win <3

  • Thankyou kindly!

  • This is fantastic! Do you work as an animator?

  • Oops nevermind just read the profile.

  • Hey thanks for taking the time to comment anyway! Keep up the animations friend!

  • Wow o.o and in what program did you animate in? :0

  • Many thanks! I used good old fashioned pencil and paper to animate this! They were scanned and coloured in the machine though!

  • GOOD one man !!! but how do u make that ^^ ? !!! je dessine aussi mais je préfer le sytle manga ^^ good job man ...

  • Thanks for the kind words friend..just drawn a lot and studied the genie...I love anime too...but I think both styles have there strengths...for me Disney is king of character acting, charm and personality...but Anime is untouchable in cool graphic & stylistic cinematics and action sequences!

  • thanks ^^ u are amazing

  • Wow, you did amazing on Genie. Good Job.

  • Thanks for the kind words!

  • Your welcome.

  • awesome! thats from HOOK. i love that movie.

  • Thanks! Yes Hook is a superb film!

  • It looks good for sure, but the last accent kinda bugs me. It doesn't seem to have the finality that goes with the dialogue, you know? It could be fixed my changing the frames where he emphasizes the Y in "fly." Make his mouth bigger on the Y sound. You've got the head action down, but that's just half the battle. But I could be wrong, I'm only going by gut feelings here.

  • Thanks for the crit friend. Its nice to get analytical comments. Though I disagree with your findings it's healthy to study elements of concern from other people. You are certainly not wrong as if it bugs you then its not strong enough from you're perspective. Artistic judgment is never going to be agreed on 100% but for me the piece sings just fine. Though I appreciate your input and taking the time to share it with me.

  • Good job on your animation. one question though.... why did you use a sound from hook which is copyrighted

  • Many thanks! To answer your query-The dialogue was chosen as used for test purposes. This animation was completed as a pitch for a project and I was given no original dialogue assets. In keeping with the movies tradition I chose a zany example of Robin Williams that wasn't geared for animation. No money was made from this and unfortunately I never attained the project so the copyright issue is void as the piece just sits as a demo of my animation ability. Thanks for asking.

  • very cool. what school did u go 2?

  • Thanks for the kind words. I studied (note I use the term very loosely) at the Surrey Institute of art and design in the UK. But I must add that I learned none of my animation skills from this school. A copy of the illusion of life and lots of personal drawing development from life drawing to studying classic Disney has gotten me where I am today...Many thanks for asking friend :)

  • XD This rules my whole world right now.

  • Thanks for the kind words friend!

  • Dude, until I looked at the description, I could've sworn that you actually worked on the movie!

I've been self-teaching myself how to animate for about two years, so I know the kind of work that goes into this.

  • Thanks for the words of appreciation! The great thing about animation is that aside from a few technical craft issues it mostly is a self-learning and evolving process... Though I acquired a level of professionalism from working with some great animators most of my skills were acquired through trial and error. I wish you the very best with your animation friend!

  • Aw, thank you very much! ^^

  • OMG i keep starting it over hoping there'll b more @ the end!!! lol i love it! Genie's my FAV character EVER. EV-ER. I'm not even joking. U did a REALLY great job! I don't have the patience to do something like that.

  • Hey thanks a lot for your comments! I'm glad you liked it.

It was fun to do...and yes Genie is a great character !

  • Was that Batman I saw in there?

  • Yes! Or it was the genie doing his Batman impersonation and getting involved in the age old superhero argument...Taking the side of the guys who have super powers of course (though I must stress that my personal preference lies in the Bat but the dialogue lent itself to the opposing side!)

  • Oh, I get it! Cause Genie's all-powerful, right?

Awesome work! I was always a huge fan of Genie!

  • Yeah so naturally he would side with the super beings!

Many thanks for your kind words friend!

  • LOL I expect to hear "DON'T MESS WITH ME MAN, I'M A LAWYER!!" Except Genie's not a lawyer...far from it XD

  • Ha ha!

You know that would have been funny if I kept that part and had Genie pop into a Caricatured Lawyer...

  • LOL! That would have been hilarious!!! XD (I was about to go into some weird ramble about the third Aladdin movie, but seeing as how my enthusiasm would probably be somewhat frightening, I won't XD) Can I ask you what program you used to animate this, and how much it costed, AND where I can find it? Windows Movie Maker doesn't work very well for frame-by-frames >.>

  • Hey ramble away! Though I only like the true Disney features meaning only the original Aladdin, In the sea of computer animated movies It's nice to see some enthusiasm towards traditional animation! Well this was done with pencil and paper just like the movie. It was scanned and coloured in the computer and output through a programme called premiere...its quite expensive(google it) but if you can do 12 frames a second on another one then that should be good enoughhope that helps!

  • XD Thank you! And yeah, a lot of people only like the original Disney movies. In most cases, that's me too, but I'm so in love with the Genie character (mostly Robin Williams--which is one of many reasons that I didn't like the second) Twelve frames per second? Nice! And yeah, I imagine that'd take time and energy. Thanks again! =)

  • Hey, can you do one of this but the whole scene when Rufio starts it and Peter (Genie) is rusty on name calling all the way to the food fight? Now THAT would make my day!

  • Hey totofan Hows the writing going?

Well it would have been fun to have done that but this alone took a fair amount of time and I was commisioned to do it! Like you I gotta get some of my own little creations out there! Thanks for the interest in this piece it is greatly appreciated!

  • My writing is going great! Thanks for asking. i only have 5 chapters to go and BAM, hello publisher!

  • It's a little less conservative than Disney's typical style, innit. Pretty good!

  • Hey Thanks for the kind comment it is much appreciated!

Though In fairness to Disney Walt always had them reinventing themselves Fantasia being the prime example (1940). Aladdin (1992) was a great mix of styles and they did try again in the late 90's early 2000's with movies such as Hercules, Atlantis and Emperors new groove. The money men particularly in today's market insist on repetition but great artists like Goldberg (genie) find a way to smuggle some creativity in there!

  • Okay! But I have some un-finished projects also that I need to finish, but that could (and probably will) be the next thing I will try. I could even be a book!

  • Genie is mad about something!!! j/k. what you need to do is make a movie about Genie. All about his life. Like who were his past masters were? Dis he have parents? and most importantly... DID HE EVER HAVE A GIRLFRIEND??? LET ALONE A WIFE??? HE IS NEVER SAD!?!?!? THERE'S A STORY SOMEWHERE!!!! and you could have friends to do some voices or use lines from different movies or performinces. hey, you could even send it to Disney themselves!!!! I bet they would LOVE IT!!!!

  • Hey what a great comment to receive!

I think you have a good idea there...Instead of ruining the original movie with a series of Aladdin but still wanting to expand upon the licence - a series about who the genie was before Aladdin would have been a far more imaginative concept!

It seems to me that you should get the script going and send it in to Disney!

It would take me forever to animate such a movie alone and I do have my own projects to be developing!

  • Eee, that's right good is that, lad.

Tell me, how long have you worked at Disney? I only ask, because we're right interested getting someone like yourself working on our new show- "The Tweenies on Ice" which would really benefit from your animation type stuff...

The contract's in the mail as I right this.

We start at 9:00 on Monday in Eccles. You're up for that, right?

    Oli

  • By Eck! The Tweenies on Ice...Well I never... I'd better get packing and give the darn thing a good seeing to...I'll make it so bleein' hot that the ice 'll melt and put and end to the whole ruddy thing!

  • Oh by the way, on a more serious note, I've shown this to quite a few people at Aards. Needless to say- It BLEW THEIR MINDS MAN!

Just thought you like to know!

  • This has got to be one of the most phenominal animations i've ever seen on the internet!

You really should work for Disney y'a know that? (if Disney was doing TRADITIONAL animation right now.)

  • Hey there! Thanks for your extremely generous comment! It is much appreciated! (it is a shame Disney abandoned it's roots.)

  • Actually, they're working on one called "The Princess and the Frog" released in 2009. The directors will the ones who directed "The Little Mermaid", "Aladdin", "The Great Mouse Detective" and "Treasure Planet".

  • Hey thanks for trying to cheer me up it's appreciated...I know all about it...I love Ron and Johns work all of it, but I am sceptical about this new release because I can already sense Pixars influence all over it...Randy Newman doing the music??? well that has already taken any hope I had in my heart away...I can just see all the tv sitcom style humor invading the fairytale sensibilities of classic Disney storytelling...May be good for some but not for me...Still thanks for the heads up!

  • That was truly impressive, especially the ending. I'm sure that Robin Williams would of loved that if he saw it. :)

  • Thank you friend... I worked darn hard on this piece as I always loved the (original)Movie when I was a kid.

  • Aladdin was and still is a great movie! I also loved the movie Hook as well.

  • We are in total agreemant on both movies my friend!

  • Yep!

  • LOL Hook. :)

  • Yeap you got it! Great user name by the way!

  • I have to agree, that is a great user name.

  • Hold up, Hold up. You made this? Your incredible. I've always wanted to be an animator, but I'm not a very good artist. Is drawing something you can learn to do or do you have to be born with that talent?

  • Hey Thanks for the kind words! Yeah Of course you can be a good artist animator! In my opinion there is no such thing as being born with talent...Sure some folk are more natural at things then others but every one has to learn and develop in order to attain a goal. I work in animation Occasionally I meet people who make me feel "Darn I need to improve!" It's those moments I cherish... your walk cycle is a good start! Keep working at it and who knows where you'll find yourself! Best of luck!

  • Thank you very much. I will work and practice harder to become the best damn animator there is. I appreciate your inspiring response. Best of luck to you to.

  • Respond to description:

wow that must of been great to get a thumbs up from Eric Goldberg keep up the good work and keep doing them and uploadeing them! (if u got the time) i have just subscribed so i hope to see more ;) gosh i talked alot. From, One of Your Big Fans

  • Hey Thankyou for your kind words. It was great to get input from Eric Goldberg and it's also great to recive comments from people such as your self who give their time to watch my efforts! Thanks again!

  • hey man, scudder here,

nice to see the u tube community are bigging you up. just taking a nice moment to catch your vid again. i particularly dig the hand through the ear bit.

i had the pleasure of catching beauty and the beast on the plane home, i'd forgotton how awe inspiring that beast animation is.

anyway, hi. let me know when you post up some more work.

    peace!

  • Hey man! Always thankful to recive kind words from your good self! Yeah - for me The Beast still stands out as one of the greatest examples of modern Character animation - Keene is king indeed, I'm just sorry he switched over to CGI!

  • Awsome. I especially love the pencil test. I aso love how you kept the same style for Genie as in the first movie. The other two films and series didnt have that same great style.

  • Hey thanks a lot for the kind words. It's great that you recognise the quality of the Aladdin feature over the budget sequals and series. Aladdin had Disney's finest animators on it where as the other stuff was farmed out overseas to tv studios. Oh yeah I really enjoyed your Batman beyond stuff!

  • What program did you use?

I have a wacom pen Tablet to.

  • You have a Wacom Thats great they are lots of fun! This piece however was done in the good old fashioned Pencil on paper!!! I scanned them in a computer and coloured it and ran it through a basic editing program named premiere.

  • Do I have some good news for you! Disney is going back to hand drawn animation with The Princess and the Frog! And for the first time, there's gonna be a black Disney princess!

  • Hey thanks for taking the time to cheer me up! I already know about the Frog Prince... I am not that enthusiastic because The head Pixar man is head at Disney now and already stopped production of some Disney projects. I fear the classic story telling style of Disney will be replaced by the sitcom Pixar style. Not saying its bad... .just not my thing ... not really Disney

  • Aw, come on! Don't assume the worst, it may be better than you think.

  • yeah.... Sorry I didn't mean to sound so negative. It's just that Disney doesn't feel like Disney anymore. its all witty and satirical. with less classical cinematic melodrama (Beauty & Beast). Sure thats not to everyones taste but it was why I wanted to be an animator... Still I hope your right!

  • WOw. I've always dreamed of working for Disney as an animator. And I still do. Ironically I'm taking up nursing...forced to do it. But that aside, I'm kind of saddened, even afraid of what you said about Disney now being witty and satirical. Although that's kind of fun too, but how about the people you work with? I just how the niceness and magic's still intact. Y_Y

  • Hey there. Please don't be afraid of what I said as I was not talking about the attitude of the actual animators,

    (I never worked at Disney)

but instead stressing my opinion of the recent films they have made (after Home on the range). Whats important is that you still enjoy the films! I work as a freelancer in many studios - people are just as they are everywhere nice and hmmmm...! Sadly for me I feel that Disney threw what ever magic it had away wen it discarded traditional animation :(

  • Hi! Sorry for the late reply. I was away. I kind of figured it out after I read through the comment you made over again. But thanks for replying! ^_^ I apprecite the new 3D Disney productions but I do agree that the new ones lack the magical experience Disney used to impart. But I just hope the Tinkerbell movie makes up for that....Y_Y

  • I really miss hand drawn animation in the movies, theres just so much more heart and feeling than with CGI animation. I can only hope that CGI is a fad that will were out eventually. But excellent job, if I didn't know better I would say that this was done by the original animators. Awesome work.

  • Thankyou for your Kind words. Your feelings regarding Hand drawn animation echo my own. For me CGI is the only viable medium for movies such as Jurrasic park and realistc combinations, but for pure animated movies with illustrative qualities Classical animation wins. Unfortunately our opinions may be a minority and the minority is often over looked...

  • What does he say!

  • Ahhh! this is a line from the movie Hook! He says "I'll tell you what a paremecium is... it's a one cell critter with no brain that Can't fly!" the above movie is my interpretation! Thanks!

  • I never knew that was from Hook,

after all Robin Williams does plays in Aladdin and Hook.

  • What part in Hook?

  • The part where he argues with Rufio just befor the food fight.

  • That is funny!

  • I love this. haha..! good job!

    Great portfolio you have.

Btw I would be appreciate if you can give feedbacks on my animation as well in my channel. :)

  • Thank you very much. I will be happy to give you feedback...expect a message soon!

  • hey eubasaban!

    it's your man scudder!

good to see your stuff on the old tube mate!

    over and out.

  • That was great. You're a great animator.

  • Thanks for the kind words!

  • If you could do Disney Animation,

you should work with Disney Studios!

  • That was my dream friend...Unfortunately times have changed and Disney no longer does drawn animation on a grand scale making my chances of working there extremely slim.Still Thanks for your kind feedback!

  • You're such a kind guy.

  • Did you work on that Make A Wish ad on the Aladdin SE DVD in 2004 perhaps.

  • Hi. Thankyou for your gracious comments! I didn't work on the ad as the Maestro Eric Goldberg ended up doing it I believe. I was in the running to work on it along with a great animator which is why I did this test. It was right that Eric Goldberg should animate the Genie and the ad was truly fantastic and beyond my capabilities! Still I learnt a heck of a lot doing it and Eric's endorsment of it later was reward enough!

  • That's new information to me, Eric animated that ad himself. I was always under the impression it was outsourced to a talented studio.

  • I'm not 100% shure but it was going to be outsourced to us but I was later informed that Eric did it himself...

  • Wow, thats great. Genie is close to his orginal movie version. And great that Eric Golberg liked it as well.
