The nice thing about the Faber-Castell pens is if you want to be really miserly you can keep refilling them with india ink until the tip is finally flattened.
I use the pentel non photo blue leads in my mechanical pencil and find that they break a lot (as you mention). I'm not sure if they are 5 or 7 (i think 5), but do you have another brand that you recomend for less breakage?
