Amanda Palmer and Neil Gaiman belong to a cult that opposes free speech and free movement. Scientology runs prison camps for its members, litigates enemies into silence and is responsible for suicides and suspicious deaths worldwide. Gaiman grew up being audited and intimidated himself and is used to lying. He may not even realize he’s a hypocrite. Scientology persecutes gay men and woman, by supporting Prop 8 in CA along with so many crazy scams and crimes I can’t list here.
This song has helped me through some of the toughest times in my life. Thank you Amanda. You are a star and you are my idol. Hopefully when you come back to Australia I will be able to afford tickets to come see you. xoxoxo
She is so ugly, but in her ugliness, she is absolutely, stunningly, beautiful. I didn't think I'd ever hear a voice to match that of Amy Lee's, but I think I have, scratch that. I know I have.
Living without dead time would mean to live each moment to its fullest extent. Not to be "killing time", apathetic. This is relevant to the song because Amanda is singing about someone who just stares at the wall, someone who has every colour of thread and the pattern laid out before them and no will to use the needle in their hand. This needle is the extended central metaphor for the power to change their fate. "The point of it all" is a pun on the needle and the situation.
@superfluousness321 The needle and the point is used for a metaphor for a lot more though. It is impossible to find just one meaning to this song in my opinion, there is just too many layers and subtle hints and metaphors in the song for that. I like finding some meanings, but remember that not everything is a metaphor either. This song is great for it ability to affect so many different people for so many reasons. I doubt just on meaning is the right one. ;)
i was listening to this on my walk home from school the other day and out of fucking nowhere, i began weeping uncontrollably.. scrunchy face and everything. i'd never experienced that before.
I would say I want to be like Amanda Palmer, but that's not right. I just want to be myself as much as she can. This song always makes me so very peaceful, but so very sad.
Nice to see you again, dearie. Been a long time since the opera in Harvard Square. Personally, I think Bahstan killed ya. What a dreary, corporate, judgmental and cursed place. I escaped, yipee!
I think the stuff about sewing machines and thread are lyrical prestidigitation. I hear a song to a junkie in this video. Someone constantly on the nod. And wealthy. The needle is most likely actually hypodermic, I'm just doubtful it's for heroin rather than morphine. Smack is so plebian. Am I the only one thinking eyebrow comments to AFP are like pretty hair comments to Atrocity (/watch?v=Im8OwPjmc7E): missing the point? (Heh... "missing the point..." See what I did there? Shameful...)
I like to think I'm not the only June in the world who heard this song and thought, "Well, that's it. As if the bitch hadn't already antagonized me enough all these years. She even had to call me out."
Amanda's the only person I haven't met, that I swear has known me my entire life.
really?i think about how more people are well off than others and have things just GIVEN to them.and others have to work for what they want to make something with their life "you have the needle" ..but..in all fairness. to his his own:) the music will speak to everyone in a different way.
at 3:22 "vivez sans temps mort", translates: "live without dead time". it was graffiti written on a french subway in the 60's - which actually has an extremely Existential meaning to it. Perhaps kiddos this entire album is ms. Palmer going through an existential crisis. Is she allowed to be herself or does she have to conform now to what the public demands she be? If she takes a different direction in her craft(ala U2 circa 90's w/zooropa ) will you abandon her or call her sell out?
No way, you've not heard? There's a very rational monkey roaming the streets, threatening all with his notebook of proofs on why God does not exist. What would I do if he cornered me and demanded that my faith was irrationally based? I fear he would never let me go, after all, I am still stuck on how the concept of having or not having "faith" is an end result of the concept of "reason". A proof both good rational atheists and non-atheists have tried ever so hard to make me understand.
haha. Are you implying that perhaps I am an imaginary constructed youtube user for the point of producing an existence communication. I daresay, if that were the case I should surely have dubbed myself something like: Johannes the Seducer, or Judge Wilhelm, or Constantin Constantius and not the Danish translation of the English word "graveyard", - I am after all, a simple existing foolish individual who has nothing important to say :P
The lyrics are wrong that Ive looked at. At the end she says "just cuz they call themselves experts it doesnt mean sweet fuck all" and the lyrics say something totally different o_O
This is such a beautiful song, and it really reminds you of some good memories when your down. Definitely reminds me of some stronger things.
I love the song, and she looks like she genuinely means her lyrics when she sings them. I can really feel the emotion (as opposed to some pop songs of today, but let's not stoop to such levels).
Amanda! Totally genius! Your voice is so fragile and delicate yet strong and vulerable at the same time! My daughters have also "joined" the renaissance and spread the word about you to all thier friends, with this project and TDD! You are super brilliant and my girls absolutely adore that you are unique, talented, beautiful! They think it is super cool that you have followed your dreams and are living it! Hats off to you from deep south Texas! Amazing is all we can say about this song!
I love the way her expression changes with the lyrics. It's like she's not just singing it, she's feeling it. You can really see her passion for her music. Very much unlike top 40 artists whose videos have generally nothing to do with the songs. Just them dancing around trying to look "sexy".
I always thought this song was about a recovering drug addict...hmm

Actually, eyebrows have a purpose. They catch the sweat that would otherwise roll right into our eyes making it all but impossible to see.
