To the people asking why she's wearing a different dress, I think she was pregnant during this role, so they might've needed a different fit after a while.
Heather Laws is great in this role. Although she is wearing a different costume and has a different hair style then she did in the DVD version of this. Also I like her screaming she does in the DVD version. This is still one of my favorite parts of Company! Her diction is amazing!
Actually, that is the original tempo, it's just that many actresses can't do it that quickly and make it understandable, so it gets slowed down in most productions. She sings it this fast on the cast soundtrack.
It's supposed to be that fast! That's the joke. She's freaking out about her wedding, so she's talking really fast. :) It's funnier when its fast. Lol.
Tempo is too fast for anyone to make every single word comprehensible. But that Heather as Amy - not only is she the most convincingly anxious, but she is most fleet of tongue!
Quite impressive that she can keep this together without tripping. However, I think they've made the tempo too fast. It was intended to be fast, but not this fast...in my opinion, it detracts from Sondheim's vision and the audience's enjoyment.
hmmm, it doesn't seem to me to be excessively fast. maybe a little uneven, with certain parts sung faster than others, but the elongation of other words keeps it at the same pace. at least i think.
This is the second hardest song of sonheims that he EVER wrote. The harest is from Sweeney Todd called Love Me. But, this song is hard because #1 it's pace (Typical sondheim), #2 it's range for the choir singer,
#3 it's topic, #4 it's overlapping at the end between Amy, the Chorus, and Paul.
THEY DID AN AMAZING JOB!!!!! My dream part is Paul or Larry. :) LOVE THIS MUSICAL!!
Love her so much. I know not everyone is crazy over the revival, but it's what helped me discover this musical and now I have tons of cast recordings and videos! Thank you for posting this - it's great to see the little differences from the PBS broadcast. :-)
Triple speed indeed. The fact that this lady could memorize all this is a major feat, but that she could recite it at warp speed AND do physical comedy too speaks volumes of her talent. Who is she? I don't think I've ever seen her before. May I also add, WOW.
How did she sing that fast and still enunciate almost perfectly? It is all a little too fast to pick up on some of the jokes but you can see how neurotic she is in her face -- she's great.
I give it a B-. The problem with that tempo is that she isn't able to hit the nuance on some of the funnier lines- it's all kind of one-note (much like the revival itself.)
I'm in love with this!!!!!!!!! The first time I saw this, although I couldn't make out every word she was saying, I still clearly understood MOST of what she was saying! And The way she does it faster and more frantic makes it more relatable and the lyrics that you miss are even better displayed and evoked through her PANIC state!!! Flawlessly done!!!
I'd agree. It's almost as if one doesn't need to know exactly what she is saying to understand the state of mind the character's in. And it quite effective. The fact the words rattle by me so quickly makes me giggle all the more. I'd prefer to hear the words, but I think this performance is quite effective anyway.
This is my favorite version of this song. Heather Laws is awesome. At least she brings some character to the part. Madeline Kahn I felt was just flat and seemed to just be going through the motions.
The first several times I heard this, I caught very few words. Then I saw other versions (particularly Carol Burnett) and looked up the lyrics and now I understand what she's saying. So, in my case you're right.
@obt2002 Yeah well tht was the tempo Sondheim orginally wrote it, most productions slow down the tempo bc it is hard to sing tht fast and anunciate the words clearly!
It's just a piece of set...just pretend that the diamond thing was rotated a bit. It's just a regular stage. I don't really know how to describe it!! lol
@orca1142 There is a set peice that is set on the regular stage, and it is, indeed, shaped like a diamond. The stage is regular, and there is a diamond-shaped set on top of the regular stage.
The stage is regularly rectangular shaped, and this recording isn't filmed from an angle. Set up on the rectangular stage is a diamond shape which acts as the regular 'playing field' on which the majority of the action of the play acts out. However, actors are still free to go outside of this diamond and stand on the remainder of the stage.
Since the actors also play their own instruments, the staging is designed to keep everyone close together to promote a sense of intimacy. This keeps the music strong (since the instruments are always in close proximity to each other), and reinforces the sense of 'company' in the show. The Sweeney Todd revival a few years back (directed by John Doyle, who also directed this Company) was the same way; action took place on a wooden floor in the center of the regular stage.
@orca1142 kinda yes. The point of the diamond that is lowest on the screen is downstage center on the stage. the stage itself is not a big diamond. but the playing space they use is.
brilliant, fantastic, an interesting concept that works! I worked on a production of tyhis 20 years ago, I love this musical and this production does justice to sondhiem... what more compliment can I give it? Well done, and thankx for posting
I love you! Haha. I sat at the center of the front row one day (at the end of the diamond), and having this going on right over my head was one of the most hilarious experiences ever.
i definitely like the bangs better than on the filmed version.
