  • i definitely like the bangs better than on the filmed version.

  • To the people asking why she's wearing a different dress, I think she was pregnant during this role, so they might've needed a different fit after a while.

  • Why is this dress different than the one that is on the filmed DVD of this same show with the same cast?

  • wow that's impossible fast!!!

  • I seriously love her.

  • why is it that in the pro-shot filmed version, shes wearing a different costume?

  • This is actually faster than the 1970 original WOW O.O

  • Heather Laws is great in this role. Although she is wearing a different costume and has a different hair style then she did in the DVD version of this. Also I like her screaming she does in the DVD version. This is still one of my favorite parts of Company! Her diction is amazing!

  • Heather Laws and Barbara Walsh: My heroes.

  • Fucking. Genius.

  • How is this too fast? You can understand every word she says. The speed is the joke of the song. It should be as fast as understandably possible.

  • Actually, that is the original tempo, it's just that many actresses can't do it that quickly and make it understandable, so it gets slowed down in most productions. She sings it this fast on the cast soundtrack.

  • @bridgestm

this is faster than the original writing

  • Oh my gosh!!! Why is this SO FAST?!

  • It's supposed to be that fast! That's the joke. She's freaking out about her wedding, so she's talking really fast. :) It's funnier when its fast. Lol.

  • haha i can see them sitting there..."could you do it a little faster?....how bout here?...a little more?".

anyways she really spat it out, kudos to her.

  • Was that Heather Laws, different costume from the filmed version...

  • @WWEQAF Beth Howland in the original cast gave the definitive performanxce of this brilliant song.

  • I dont like the sondheim PLAY YOUR OWN INSTRUMENTS as the actors... I didnt enjoy it

  • Impressive, but WAY too fast. That tempo sacrifices storytelling for showiness.

  • oh my, it's not even this fast on the dvd. It's super cool she can do it that fast though

  • hahaha at 1:15 it looks like she is looking directly into the camera!

  • Tempo is too fast for anyone to make every single word comprehensible. But that Heather as Amy - not only is she the most convincingly anxious, but she is most fleet of tongue!

  • why does this different than the PBS TV version?

  • Because this is was someone (audience member) videotaping.

  • something called bootleg

  • I love Amy's Screams!!!! Why aren't they in the CD!! *giggles* this show is excellent.

  • wasn't she pregnant during this time?? i love her performance of this

  • oh my goodness....this is the fastest ever...and its amazing!

  • Check out the 1995 revival album. That one is really fast too.

  • wow, she can sing fast!

  • Quite impressive that she can keep this together without tripping. However, I think they've made the tempo too fast. It was intended to be fast, but not this fast...in my opinion, it detracts from Sondheim's vision and the audience's enjoyment.

  • hmmm, it doesn't seem to me to be excessively fast. maybe a little uneven, with certain parts sung faster than others, but the elongation of other words keeps it at the same pace. at least i think.

  • The 1995 revival was very fast too. I heard that one first and when I heard the other videos on youtube, I thought they were slow.

  • This is faster, though.

  • when i heard this on the cd i figured that they digitally sped up the pace, but they definitely didn't.

  • This is the second hardest song of sonheims that he EVER wrote. The harest is from Sweeney Todd called Love Me. But, this song is hard because #1 it's pace (Typical sondheim), #2 it's range for the choir singer,

#3 it's topic, #4 it's overlapping at the end between Amy, the Chorus, and Paul.

THEY DID AN AMAZING JOB!!!!! My dream part is Paul or Larry. :) LOVE THIS MUSICAL!!

    A+

  • love me. ???

    what is that?

i dont remember that in sweeney todd

  • I'm sorry... i ment kiss me! LOL! It's between Anthony and Joanna. It's sooooo fast and difficult. Ughhhhh! Have you heard it?

  • ya, it my 2nd favorite song besides worst pies in london

  • wow

  • I can not believe how fast she sings this, but it's awesome non the less.

  • why does amy have a black dress in this?

  • she equates marriage with death!

  • Love her so much. I know not everyone is crazy over the revival, but it's what helped me discover this musical and now I have tons of cast recordings and videos! Thank you for posting this - it's great to see the little differences from the PBS broadcast. :-)

  • wHO IS SHE???

  • ...did you read the video description?

Only one of the names is female, shouldn't be too hard for you to figure out.

  • Sondheim on crack, dunno who she is... I dont think she is human, she never breaths.

  • at 1-30 she sings very very good.

  • OMG how she does that I have no idea. WOW

    Thats triple speed

  • Triple speed indeed. The fact that this lady could memorize all this is a major feat, but that she could recite it at warp speed AND do physical comedy too speaks volumes of her talent. Who is she? I don't think I've ever seen her before. May I also add, WOW.

  • How did she sing that fast and still enunciate almost perfectly? It is all a little too fast to pick up on some of the jokes but you can see how neurotic she is in her face -- she's great.

  • It's Broadway. Broadway MAGIC! That's why she's so good. Because she's the best out of thousands who auditioned.

  • wow

  • OMG this is the fastes version Ive ever heard... AMAZING!

  • I give it a B-. The problem with that tempo is that she isn't able to hit the nuance on some of the funnier lines- it's all kind of one-note (much like the revival itself.)

  • I'm in love with this!!!!!!!!! The first time I saw this, although I couldn't make out every word she was saying, I still clearly understood MOST of what she was saying! And The way she does it faster and more frantic makes it more relatable and the lyrics that you miss are even better displayed and evoked through her PANIC state!!! Flawlessly done!!!

  • Dear Lord! Haha, this is CRAZY!

  • just tought i'd say

    1. its insane how fast she sings this and yet still you can understand her

    2. my friends doing this at normal tempo and this has terrified her a little

    3. i like her performance

    4. did they expect her to do the physical comedy when she was heavily pregnant?

  • she does do it a bit faster in this version but it just adds to the 'craziness' of her character.

  • I'd agree. It's almost as if one doesn't need to know exactly what she is saying to understand the state of mind the character's in. And it quite effective. The fact the words rattle by me so quickly makes me giggle all the more. I'd prefer to hear the words, but I think this performance is quite effective anyway.

  • i agree. the tempo adds to the eccentricity of her character. i think she's a way funnier Amy than Madeline Kahn.

  • why does she have a different hair style and different dress?

  • She still did Company even though she was 9 months pregnant? I would had liked to see that.

  • This is my favorite version of this song. Heather Laws is awesome. At least she brings some character to the part. Madeline Kahn I felt was just flat and seemed to just be going through the motions.

  • I quite liked this tempo.

  • I just feel like if you didn't already know the lyrics, you'd lose a lot of words.

  • The first several times I heard this, I caught very few words. Then I saw other versions (particularly Carol Burnett) and looked up the lyrics and now I understand what she's saying. So, in my case you're right.

  • Yeah, this was far too fast!

  • It's suppose to be fats because she Nervous, Our preforming arts scenter just did COMPANY and it was AWESOME!

  • I know it is, but it's not supposed to be done THIS fast.

  • This is amazingly fast, but what's more amazing is that I can hear and understand every word "Amy" is singing.

  • @obt2002 that is because sondheim is god.

  • @obt2002 Yeah well tht was the tempo Sondheim orginally wrote it, most productions slow down the tempo bc it is hard to sing tht fast and anunciate the words clearly!

  • The music sounds so amazing at that speed, but we lose some of the jokes.

  • this was actually TOO fast for my taste. i almost missed the jokes in the song cuz all i could hear was FSDJFSD:LFJSDJFSJ

  • Wow, she's great!

  • Belinda's cousin Steve was kicked out of the country club because his dog (for about the 10th time) pooped on the 14th green

  • And also...is th stage really shaped like a diamond?

  • Everyone wears black in this production. And considering how she feels about the wedding, I think it's kinda appropriate.

And no, it was a regular stage. Remember this is being filmed from an angle.

  • ......I dont get it. What is that black striped thingy.Thats whats making the stage look diamond. The stage look just really wierd.

  • It's just a piece of set...just pretend that the diamond thing was rotated a bit. It's just a regular stage. I don't really know how to describe it!! lol

  • Hmm....but people stand outside the striped thing too....Im surprised they didnt fall off.

  • @orca1142

for some reason this guy is confusing you

Yes, they set it up so the space being used was a "diamond" from the audience angle instead of a front-on style

  • @orca1142 There is a set peice that is set on the regular stage, and it is, indeed, shaped like a diamond. The stage is regular, and there is a diamond-shaped set on top of the regular stage.

  • The stage is regularly rectangular shaped, and this recording isn't filmed from an angle. Set up on the rectangular stage is a diamond shape which acts as the regular 'playing field' on which the majority of the action of the play acts out. However, actors are still free to go outside of this diamond and stand on the remainder of the stage.

  • Do you know the reason for that?

  • Since the actors also play their own instruments, the staging is designed to keep everyone close together to promote a sense of intimacy. This keeps the music strong (since the instruments are always in close proximity to each other), and reinforces the sense of 'company' in the show. The Sweeney Todd revival a few years back (directed by John Doyle, who also directed this Company) was the same way; action took place on a wooden floor in the center of the regular stage.

  • Yes i know. But was sweeney todd 'just' in the middle of the stage? I thought it took the whole stage.

  • @orca1142 kinda yes. The point of the diamond that is lowest on the screen is downstage center on the stage. the stage itself is not a big diamond. but the playing space they use is.

  • Why is she wearing black to wedding?

  • i prefer it this fast, just because it shows the manic and neurotic side of her rant lol.

  • Speed over substance. Did John Doyle really make Ms. Laws get down on her knees when she sang "please, on my knees, there's a human life at stake"?

  • um i definately agree with you. i sense some bad directing.

  • That was way too fast! I didnt get a word! Check out Madeline Kahn´s performance, it´s perfect!

  • i agree; it sounds muddled and it forces her to break when she ought not.

  • its supposed to be fast though. if it were slower you wouldnt capture the escense of total panic. and i know i spelt that wrong..

  • I know that. It is supposed to be fast, but it is TOO fast in this case.

  • brilliant, fantastic, an interesting concept that works! I worked on a production of tyhis 20 years ago, I love this musical and this production does justice to sondhiem... what more compliment can I give it? Well done, and thankx for posting

  • Yes, she's very fast and funny, but she's not even trying to sing most of the notes -- that's cheating! I still prefer Beth Howland.

  • Damn. This is fast.

  • I just love this! The AMy in the 2006 revival is just so cute and funny.

  • thank you for that wonderful gift!

  • I love you! Haha. I sat at the center of the front row one day (at the end of the diamond), and having this going on right over my head was one of the most hilarious experiences ever.

  • You are almost my hero... Please tell me you have The Little Things You Do Together... if you do, then you are my hero...

  • I guess I'm your hero :)

  • Huzzah! Also, when did you film this?
