  • what is blurr? (use google translate and make it swedish please)

  • @Msyodamaster When the club head passes very fast in front of your eyes it makes a streak or blur that you can see it's path; there was a training aid called the "freddy connect" that helped with this; Shawn

  • Awesome series of videos...unbelievably helpful.

Quick question for you. I am an 8 HCP, but shank the ball about 2-3 times per round (usually on about hole 15 or so, and can be any iron...3-iron through sand wedge--starts with approach shot usually).

What's so frustrating is that at the range, I can only hit about 5 iron shots before the shanks set in...but on the course, I can get through most of the round with nice shots. Never shank woods at all...long and straight all day with woods. Help!

  • @miami1lt What was your focus over the ball when you shanked it?? Very important question here!!

    See my "ridiculously easy; Shawn Clement part 1 and 2" and "How to focus part 1 and 2; shawn clement" videos;

    Shawn

  • @clemshaw I have watched about 2.5 hrs of your videos, and definitely have helped...just got done playing a round today, and focused very hard on turning hips first then hands, and not other way around...I think I was coming inside.

However, still had 3 shanks...and they were all 40-50 yd pitch shots...half swings are killing me.

10 yrs ago I could hit a 3-iron stinger like Tiger (j/k, but seriously, I could)...now, anything short of a full swing is disaster right...appreciate the help!

  • @miami1lt That is easy! I have 3 perfect videos for that: "Feel the short swing; Shawn Clement", "Arms and Body Timing; Shawn Clement" and "Stop Crashing; Shawn Clement"; then you will be able to come back to something really easy like one of my original videos "40 to 60 yard pitch shot; shawn clement" All the best and keep plugging; come on over to my forum for extra help there too; we are very civil and helpful there; Shawn

  • Shawn, I fight a tendency to come over the top (way too vertical and out-to-in path) I used to have the clubface absolutely shut at the top and this over-the-top developed anyway, what caused pulls and pull-hooks. I got to have a square clubface and the tendency keeps being the same. Do you think that the only fact of closing the clubface at address will help me to fix that?

  • @danic18 Did you know that the best way to the ball when the ball IS YOUR TARGET is OTT? Shocking no?

Think about the guy splitting wood with an axe; the prettiest over the top motion you have ever seen and it is the most effective in relation to this focus! Now chop the tree down instead; very different action now right? PLEASE SEE "ridiculously easy; Shawn Clement" part 1 and 2 videos Shawn

  • if anything thats just a quick fix for the scratch golfer.. the key isnt to close your club face the key is to make sure the back of your left hand comes through the target flush.. you were demonstrating in that whole video with your left hand coming in wide/open... by keping the back of your hand towards your target it makes you automatically swing with a downward motion and gives you more control over the distance and arc of the ball

  • @royaloil

Dude; you are so old school! I remember teaching that crap 20 years ago; the key of the whole ball of wax is to have target focus with the feel of the action-release for that shot; many have exactly what you say at impact naturally; I DO! But it is not something that you think about and manipulate! This video is to give certain golfers OPTIONS TO ALLOW THEM TO KEEP THEIR FOCUS ON TARGET or the whole thing is a waste of time; see "#1 most popular teacher on YT; Ridiculously easy"

  • Shawn that is a great video for some reason I topped the ball a lot and after looking at the blur the shits are crisp and they are flush shots thanks a lot !!

  • hey shawn! do you have any videos showing what the club should look like when you are looking down at it at address? if not, its a good thing to incorporate in future address videos :)

  • Comment removed

  • You make it really easy to understand and perhaps addressed my biggest problem.....too much focus on the ball rather than the target in the distance. I'll have to experiment with the closed club face. ~You've given me food for thought there.

  • Hey Shawn, I have been taking lessons at Richmond Hill on and off for the past 3 years and have improved my ball striking quite a bit as a result, you guys do an amazing job! I find that while taking lessons, and also when I am practicing at the range, everything is so easy and rhythmic and I hit great shots. However, I tend to get into big slumps on the course. This is definitely a mental block since I know I have the swing to be a good player. Any tips to help overcome this?

  • @mavvvvvv

It is all about finding a target (picture of where you want the ball to start and where you want the ball to end) that you are comfortable with and then making sure that you are focused just on that; recognize when you are being distracted by other things like narrow fairways or fears of looking bad etc...focus only on what you want and do it with the fearlessness of a kid having fun with a shot! :)

    See "golf pro lesson play a shot" and "golf pro lesson how to focus" part 1 and 2;

  • What worked for me was keeping my eyes about 5 inches in front of the ball where the club is supposed to travel. I then just focus on making sure the club follows that path. I don't even really see the ball; it just gets in the way of the path. This has given me about 15 yards more per club and has lowered my handicap by 10. Thanks Shawn!

  • @jayrome977 Great way to go!

    Shawn

  • Shawn - love the lessons, great explanation, and the shank tips. I've been fighting the worst case of shanks in history. Since golf's official rules do not allow a center shafted iron/wood (unlike a putter - by the way does anyone know why that is?) I'll give the "target swing"/"inside blur" idea a try. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

  • Hi Shawn. Just wanted to say I love your videos esp this one. I am a PGA professional and i am sick and tired of all the bull out there that says everything must be lined up perfectly. I have played a draw all my life and to hit the ball straighter i just open the face and re grip, sometimes 5 degrees sometimes 10 until the ball is under control. I often fix a slicer within 5 shots using this drill you talk about here. people over complicate golf, you make it simple

  • @adamyoung158 Thanks Adam! Very much appreciated and keep up the great work! We have an important job to do for this game! Shawn

  • Hi shawn, i like the idea of this tip, i seem to hook the ball a lot, and at times i can strike the ball nice and clean and it goes up and away.

Do the pros use this method of yours? Do any of them close the clubface at address so that its square at impact?

  • @aaronjunited Watch guys like Azinger, Duval, Daly, Couples, Zack Johnson, and the list goes on and on for guys who use a 4 knuckle grip in pro golf; this is the same as using a 2 knuckle grip with a 20 degree closed face! See "golf pro lesson weak grip or strong grip" and as for your case, all you need is the awareness that you are swinging to a target or defaulting to the ball! See "golf pro lesson ridiculously easy" part 1 and 2! Shawn

  • Shawn, got a big prob hope you can suggest something. Some days I hit the ball so well, (e.g 7i to 170yds +) without any strain esp on my lower back, and then the next day when I'm looking forward to repeating this I will be all over the place, tops, thins, fat, duck hooks, slices etc etc with all clubs. Plus my lower back gets so sore. Any suggestions.

Btw I think your videos are terrific.

    James

  • @justjames1111 Hey James; the trap you do not want to into is to wonder why you are doing certain things; stay with your prime directive of "Where do I want to start the ball and where do I want it to end"; then rehearse the action to that target and get the right feel of that effortless and powerful release to that picture; then go to the ball and feel that it and the ground are in the way of this action to target; then execute and observe! Then find another picture and do it again!

  • Shawn,

I can feel the arms falling and I am hitting better shots on the irons and hybrids however the driver is the problem. I just don't feel it like I do the other clubs. Maybe it would hepl if you had more driver videos or any suggestions for exercises with the driver?

    NW

  • @wardn53 See "golf pro lesson get great rhythm" and you will see the driver towards the end; See also "golf pro lesson set up with all clubs" and "golf pro lesson swing plane" Shawn

  • Hey Shawn

I my miss with my irons has been a hook bit my miss with my driver has Bern a slice.

I'm really confused and need HELP!

  • @flopyhats Is the ball curving to the left with the irons or is it going straight left?

Straight left is the same issue as the driver slicing; see "golf pro lesson hooks and slices" and "golf pro lesson how to work the ball"; It may also mean you have to close the face a bit more with the driver; or make the grip a bit stronger' see "golf pro lesson weak grip or strong grip" Shawn

  • Hi Shawn!

I noticed my backswing is quite a bit shorter and my right arm follows through a little smoother.

  • I feel I have the open clubface issue a lot; however, there are still a lot of times I hit the ball properly. Would it be better for me to just cluse the clubface and learn to hit it like that consistantly, or practice more and do it the square clubface at address way?

  • @SirXie You will answer your own question when you are aware that you are swinging to your target 100% of the time; you will come to the conclusion that to have the face dynamically square, you will need to make the grip stronger or close the face slightly, either one will do;

    Shawn

  • Shawn, I don't what happen sometime with me, espcially with the driver, I hit the driver evrytime solid even I can see the marks of teh ball always in the center of the club. I was yesterday play and I hit everytime in the front toe of the driver, At the final hole I pick it up my 8 iron and do what do you say about feel teh wegiht of arm club unit form my socket I have to close my eyes first to feel that and I hit the 8 iron pefect, I have to feel the same thing with the driver, HELP!!

  • I always like to have a strong grip and aim just right of my target. That way a miss doesn't hurt me. A straight shot is just right and a miss is a little draw that is at the target or just left. Better than aiming at the target with a normal grip that could either go left or right big time.

  • @tfdoke Predictability is the key to scoring!! :)

    Thanks for the comment! Shawn

  • Sean, really like your videos. i was wondering if you do requests. if so i was interested to see how you describe conservation of angular momentum (COAM) in the swing. I'm just wondering because understanding this principle has been the biggest help to my golf game and I'm sure it would help more people understand how the swing actually works. thanks a lot -Spencer

  • Shawn -- excellent video -- this is the only way I have been able to hit my irons straight. I guess it's because my little brain knows that if my hands are ahead of the ball the clubface will be straight. I also like your instruction not to concentrate on the ball, as I do, at times, get golfballitis & it just messes up my swing terribly.

    Keep up the good work.

  • @MadsHilde. Think about this too. If the ball is going with the desired flight path and at the desired target, it's more likely that what the golfer was doing before wasn't quite right. I've always found that the club usually looks more closed than it really is at address anyway.

A "cheat" or a "trick" would involve a compensation. The ball would start way left or right and come back at the target.

  • Thanks for the answer. It's night here in Denmark, can't wait to try the "trick" on the range tomorrow.

  • I swear that I was just coming to your page to search for tips on the shank, when low and behold this surmon starts. That's kind of how I feel - like I've just walked in late to Sunday church and the preacher's prepared something special just for me. Well I'm listening. And thanks for all your tips!

  • Please don't take my last post as if I doubt you, you are my number one instructor I am only just wondering.

Thanks for all you great videoes.

  • @MadsHilde No problem! If you are wondering, others are too; we have taken for granted that the experts know what they are doing...scary! My biggest disappointment was when I purchased my first video from a renown teacher 22 years ago and realized that we had a lot of work to do; today we finally have something!

I am sorry I took so long...:) Shawn

  • @clemshaw

theory, experts and golf dosnt work ;)

It should be simple and easy.

  • Hey Shawn

I'm sorry if this is gonna sound like a complaint or that I am not trusting you

To me it sounds like cheating to close the clubface at address. I mean, it sounds like: If you can't hit a straight shot with a square clubeface at address, just close it, it just kinda sounds like cheating.

This is such an easy tip, why haven't you said it in one of your very first videoes?

Why haven't I heard any other instructors talk about it and do the pros really close the clubface at address?

  • @MadsHilde Fantastic comment!! This is not cheating!! This is the way it should have been in the first place!! Guys who teach the "must have a neutral grip with square club face" at address are the "Theory without basis" or "Theory based on an opinion" guys with no sound base of Anatomy or dynamic understanding of what THROUGH THE BALL is; heck Leadbetter STILL TALKS ABOUT MAX SPEED AT THE BALL! JEEEZ! That says it all right there! We need to wake up here!! Shawn

  • @clemshaw

To add a thought onto MadsHilde's comment:

I wouldn't consider it taking your address with a closed clubface. What I've been doing is taking my semi-strong grip in the air, then setting the clubface square to the target. It might feel a little awkward at first (because your wrist position will be right of what you are used to), but after a few swings it starts feeling more and more natural. I'm not sure if Shawn would recommend that or not, but I've been having success.

  • @DIRU382 Yes; sure! It is the same effect when swinging towards the target; you can see it in my "golf pro lesson weak grip or strong grip" video;

Thanks for the great comment Dane!

    Shawn

  • Hi Shawn, this is really cool...I close up the clubface and it is really hitting the sweet spot on my club and importantly swing thorugh effortlessly. Only thing is that I have to place my ball slight foward of center otherwise it will draw alot....This also work very well for my 3 and 5 woods...So I have two questions... 1) To play low shot, So i just move the ball before center line and leave the club face same? 2) Nevertheless it dun seem to apply to my driver by closing the club face..?

  • Shawn, have you ever had your swing done with a high speed camera? I think that would be pretty cool to see, with different clubs. :)

The occasional shank really bugs me (not a good thing to have in the back of your mind over any shot). Like this morning. I shanked my first hole approach out of bounds... still managed to shoot a 2 over 37, so, my short game made up for it (with 9 putts through 9 holes). Ridiculously easy swing is such a good term. When I've felt it, that's just what it is. :)

  • So the major takeaway from this video is to use a strong grip? I've always used a neutral grip, so I might just give this a try.

Thanks for the great videos Shawn.

  • @DIRU382 David Frost was quoted as observing the stronger grip of Tom Watson after having some trouble with his game; he went with it and ended up in a playoff with Couples and Lehman for a Major...:) More than worth it wouldn't you say? :)

    Shawn

  • @clemshaw

Hey Shawn, just wanted to write a follow-up comment on this video. I've used a semi-strong grip for the last 2 days, and while I'm not experiencing any major differences between this grip and my neutral grip, I am finding myself pushing the ball less and adding about 5 or so yards to my irons. Thanks for all your help Shawn,

    -Dane

  • Shawn...you had me laughing in these video's. That was some funny stuff. But I must say that these vids are "MONEY". That was an excellent demo of how the club head reacts to what is going on with our swings.

    Just Awesome!

  • Shawn, Aldo's here, Why Moe Norman at adrees put the club head so far behind the ball, it's something similar to concentrate to the target and not the ball or the blury stuff, thanks my teacher, wait your answer!!

    aldojoel1981 hace 1 semana

  • @aldojoel1981 He did this for many reasons; not to pick up the club too early (have natural width) and feel like he was already in the backswing; which, as you know is critical to have the body react to the swing of the arm-club unit instead of manipulating the club with the arms and crashing them into the body! :) Shawn

  • great stuff!
