  • Can he do anything more than snare rolls?

  • All the best drummers are form the jazz era aka 1930s-50's. Anyone who says otherwise is either dillusional or doesnt know wtf theyre talkin about

  • @deathdrummer1000 explain gene hoglan and gorge kolias then

  • @deathdrummer1000 todays jazz drummers are much more advanced.

  • he's mother must b so angry at him... ; )

  • @fiercefun Well I don't of ANY 84 year old metal drummers who can play this well.

  • I'm not hating on any style of music...at all...considering I love all genres. But it's so ridiculous that people will try to compare styles such as rock to styles such as jazz....sooo stupid.

  • i want this guy in my band, he can actually play the drums.......take a look you half assed turds that call yourselves drummers, he has.....what is it????? TIMING!!!!!

  • go head grandpa

  • love it.very inspirational :)

  • Fantastic!

  • this guy has some chops man!

  • im wanting to learn how to play the drums i just i get just half good as he is cuz he is really good

  • I love the way those old cats just make it look so damn easy. I guess, because to them - it is!

    Love his style.

  • Maybe he's related to Mitch?

  • but he's still doin it..aint he!!....and Mitch Mitchell was a jazz drummer with none other than JH!!!

  • Unbelievable.

  • @fiercefun Louis Belson, a jazz drummer, was a double pedal master. Check him out.

  • swag in its finest

  • @1waka2laka SWAG is Stuff We All Get... I think you mean swagger

  • That guy is not 84.

  • i bet lars ulrich would feel a cunt watching this video lol, massive respect to the gentleman in this, goes to show when you love something you never loose it :))

  • i like how the jazz guys put their initials on the bass drum skin. its both classy and self-promoting. two things that don't usually go hand in hand. but when you've got the goods, you gotta let the people know it.

  • holyy dammn !

  • Look up to drums to spirit crusher by death ....metal is technical doubt get it twisted jazz fans

  • Metal drummers = jazz drummers

    Dipshit

  • Using you tube type

"Gene Morvay" to see an even better 84 year old drummer

  • Nice !

But my retired 84 year old teacher is far better.

    youtube.com/watch?v=ASAhMRlWprM

  • Nice !

  • @fiercefun jazz drummers > metal drummers

  • See that Lars Ulrich?

Age is not excuse to not play Dyers Eve correctly...

  • he's so good he was napping half way through this. Woke up and didn't miss a beat!

  • hmm its funny wean old guys pwnz!

  • I mean it's good.. but I don't see how this proves jazz drummers are better? I mean it's not that good..

  • @0:00 to start over again

  • Hurry up and die already you stupid old cunt, give someone that drum kit who can actually play it..

  • Everyone STFU! The guy is a traditional big band drummer (Swing) & likely his biggest influences were Krupa, Rich & Bellson. Perhaps even earlier drummers. If I ever see Mike Portnoy's name come up again I'll seriously, I really, I mean it, just get pissed off and throw my computer out the window. LOL Fuckin' Dream Theater fans are so fuckin' retarded. You can't compare any of those stiff bands like Rush to this. Neil Peart could not swing if he tried and he tries every night w/that stupid solo.

  • @eqsmooth thats so awesome. I was telling a huge Dream Theatre fan about a jazz drummer (Bryon Langham) and saying you could put up the Dream Theatre drummer, 2 Neil Pearts and take your pick and they still couldn't touch Bryon.

  • svaka čast !

  • FTW!

  • omg

  • omg

  • Never mind his playing ,I would like to have that much hair when I'm his age

  • Great to see old guys who've still got it. Back in the late 80s I used to play in a swing band with a tenor sax player who at that time was in his 80s and could still wail with the best of them. He'd been a professional in the 1930s & 40s playing all the hot clubs in the midwest & south. A real living treasure, musicians like that!

  • That guy has some skill!!!!!!

  • Very cool!

  • wow !

  • wow

  • There need to be more old people like this... >.>

  • Check out Jon Hiseman of Colosseum. He's turning around 70 now and he's ripping balls.

  • and this, dear watchers, is called formal drumming.

  • If you are mobile and don't piss yourself at 84, you are doing well. This guy is just flat-out impressive.

  • RAZAMANAZ É UMA BANDA DE ROCK DO RECIFE=PE=BRASIL ver youtube RAZAMANAZ A SUA MANEIRA

  • Is this Rolf Harris on his day off?!

  • Well I hope I still have power and finesse like that when I'm that age.

  • That's my gandpappy! XD

    Lmao

  • Chuck Norris's apprentice... Typical...

  • I knew they said Rolf Harris was an artist... But I never knew it was in the form of music.

  • Yikes!!! I am inspired!

  • jazz drummers are the best. i love me some eighth note ridden 4/4 rock and punk but as far as talent and style goes, theyre where its at

  • He is really energetic for an 84 year old!!

  • Sounds like Keith Moon

  • \m/

  • he's incredible. i'm speechless

  • much props!!!!!! right the hell on man

  • huh, can't believe, that's why I do not like to watch tv anymore. Internet shows real talent.

  • LOL wearing a tie and suit, didn't even break a sweat. Better than most the longhair tattoo pukeface maggots who stink up the craft these days.

  • Tear it up!

  • i dont get the reference "nice kitchen" sorry im not a drummer im a vocalist and guitarist

  • killer!!

  • nice kitchen

  • Great...i will add him as favorite just because i am musician and the man is a living book to my eyes.

  • i think he dropped his dentures

  • grandpa's still got the chops.

  • so cool !

  • R.I.P. Jack. Jack died on October 20th at age 88.

  • keep on rockin! its not everyday you find someone with wrists or ankles as solid as yours at your age XD

  • @British0Pixie Totally agree. But jazzmen also have a soul unlike all the metalhicks, never seen a metalhick playing something that is good to hear, even if it's technically advanced.

  • I would have liked to see him in his prime.

  • It's sad that drummers these days don't drum like this anymore, all hacks and self taught, so glad I went the real route, can't wait to be like this guy when I'm old!

  • @Jscolby88 Sorry but what does being self taught have to do with anything? And saying ALL drummers are hacks etc? Little bit wild there man...

  • @Jscolby88 hacks? what are hacks in drumming. lol... and self taught? really? i thought self teaching was harder than having an actual teacher. i learned more playing drums by myself and playing along to tracks. i have had no teacher, and they wouldnt help me one bit.

  • hah he reminds me of my friend drumming

  • wow, thats amazing. :)

  • Amazing!!!

  • Fucking awesome! Proof positive that age and 'being old' are two entirely different things :D

  • i knew Buddy Rich was still alive!!!!

  • See... this is why JAZZ PROGRESSIONS should be required

learning for ALL MUSICIANS. Jazz drummers rock just as hard as

metal heads but with better sense of timing and precision and they definitely

    get better with age!

Note: See Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones for reference.

  • @British0Pixie Absolutely! I do not like Jazz very much, but to get down good sycopation and timing skills I have done well with Jazz licks.

  • @billboze

Glad you have realized early in your playing/ training

the importance of proper influence and styles.

Best of luck with your music endeavors love.

    Cheers! = ]

  • @British0Pixie Really? Jazz drummers rock just as hard as metal heads? I'd like to see this 84 year old play this

    watch?v=7FBmoHncI9g

  • @rotglmao7 yes metal drummers go of great, but how many of these metal drummers can play the exact same notes with the exact same timing from show to show? not many if any, jazz drummers had class when it came to the drums, metal is banging around and trying to show speed but jazz plays with speed and persision and can go for a way longer time. i love both metal and jazz but i love jazz drummers more

  • @British0Pixie Thats why Synyster Gates is one of the greatest guitarists alive, he majored in Jazz in college to become a studio artist

  • @British0Pixie

Alot of drummers in metal are actually jazz influenced. Like Gar Samuleson and Sean Reinert. But in metal we have drummers like Mike Portnoy and Gene Hoglan and they just blow everyone away.

  • @British0Pixie yeah true i am lucky enough to have a drum teacher that does everything from dizzy Gillespie to beates

  • @British0Pixie metal drummer (the good one atleast) have just as much precision and sense of timing... just sayin..

  • @SWsnowblower pretend "drummer" and "one" are plural :P

  • Comment removed

  • @British0Pixie Disagreed.

Note: See Thomas Lang, Mike Mangini, Jimmy Sullivan, Mike Portnoy, and if that doesnt convince you; MATT GREINER.

  • @itchyzitts Matt Greiner=overrated as fuck

  • @itchyzitts portnoy does a LOT of jazz. He was the one playing for the Buddy Rich memorial for christ sakes. Drummers with a background in jazz (who go off and play in other styles) are better than any other drummer of that style hands down.

  • Old jazz guy :) nobody can play better :D

  • Very impressive! Are you sure he's 84?

  • Hi Mr. Mitchell,

It would be our pleasure to offer you a Triplet Drum Glove Endorsement By Lento Percussion.

  • Very well executed, he is an inspiration to younger drummers. I'm 64 and I hope to do that well at his age. I still practice on a practice pad most everyday waiting to pick up another drum set soon as the one I had was lost in a fire with no fire insurance or money to buy another but am saving up for another.

  • Cobus in the future!!

  • just because you play traditional doesnt mean you good every high school drummer learns that and it not good for a drum set shut up

  • Man I hope to be doing this when I'm his age - very well done!

  • ole dude is red hot man.....

  • once a drum player u never stop

  • i wish my grandpa could do that haha

  • @KingRaaa95 .. i wish mine could chew his own food and make it to the toilet in time......

  • i was liker number 1337 :D, it means something, hmm no it doesn't.

  • Jack Mitchell died October 20, 2011. Our deepest condolences from vienna

  • you can't beat over 60 years of experience xD

  • why are there so many vids on youtube with old people playin' drums? :D

  • probly related to joey jordison lmao

  • @lilguitarist95 Joey Jordison? You must mean Buddy Rich

  • and that ladies and gents is where rock came from. :)

  • I want to see George kollias on the drums when he is 84! :)

  • he grew up in the big band jazz days! so hes gotta be jazzy. lol i like this very very very much.

  • super!!! he knows how to drums

  • So thats what Colonel Sanders done in his spare time...

  • @ChloeMayPayne I thought it was George Lucas o_O

  • @ChloeMayPayne It's funny because he's dead.

  • still a ladies man

  • OHH YEAH!

  • I know he would tell me to tell my friends to tell those you love that you LOVE THEM. Thats my dad!! I LOVE YOU DAD!! Have a safe journey and when you get to heaven start a new band of angels!!! I LOVE YOU..

  • My dad taught me to be true to me and to help those around me. My dad was a role model to himself and to all those around him as he was to me. I never remember a time he and my mother weren't there for there children and boy oh boy we tested them. I think my dad if I could speak with him now would say he was in a better place and that I should make sure to breathe every moment life has and live it to it's fullest as he did.

  • Everyone please say a prayer and give your well wishes to my father on the next journey he has through the heavens and universe. My father past away last nite and all I can tell you he was a great dad. My father was my mentor, my friend and the angel who has always watched over me through good and bad. My father taught me never to judge a person but to accept them for who or what they are.

  • @tmconsult61 not a problem. man be good up there jack. just remember he was older than buddy rich when he died lol. well look i will say a prayer for him as a matter of fact, i will even put it on my prayer chain at church.

  • Totally agree with MastaShaker. Great playing, great presentation, ...many thanks.

  • The solo looks amazing but why play such a short segment? Jack was obviously playing his ASS OFF! Can't you play the whole song?

  • come on grandpa....show em the double kicks and the blast beats...the Berzerker style

  • Go Granddad you rock sir!

  • Jack Mitchell passed away after a long life playing the drums. He will be very missed.

  • @gthair NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

  • This is amazing!

  • you can tell he lived in the buddy rich era!!! still amazing to say the least!!!

  • This makes me want to practice my rudiments more.

  • BLESS HIM! AWESOME

  • stay young - play the drums!

  • young drummers don't play like that any more its a shame i wish were in the 30's

  • When you've been drumming for that long, you bound to be that good. :D

  • @boxfreak007 you're* bound to be that good

  • @boxfreak007 Are you the youtube contraction Nazi? Moron.

  • @iParatrooper yes, yes i am XD

  • @iParatrooper yeah so suck it

  • Dam... even buddy rich was like what. 67?

  • @gkc25 He was 70 when he died.

  • Comment removed

  • that is 1 badass old dude! hes fully about to go into a blast beat...seriously !

  • I think this is awesome but, the rhythm never leaves you...

  • respect

  • sounds like some buddy rich in there

  • this man spits in the face of arthritis. KU-fucking-DOS bro

  • this old man is cool as hell! i wish my pops played like this. i would have learned alot earlier!!

  • and i bet you....he could still smoke weed with the kids like a boss.... :)

  • @clemenza1234 haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

  • You are a huge inspiration to me after watching this video. I am 54 and have been playing professionally since I was 9 years old. I hope to have that much energy left in my tank if I'm lucky enough to live to that age. Keep up the great work.

  • I wish he was my grandpa. XD

  • still got the old swing era style! love it!

  • Age doesn't mean anything, If you're good, you're good, if you're not...start practicing.

  • boss

  • I take my hat off to you sir, absolutely brilliant

  • who in the right mind would dislike this?? The guy is 84yrs old.. this is amazing!!!

  • Bonzo Snr!!

  • amazing!

  • This made my morning! It also gave me inspiration. I am 43 and I want to play guitar, and I keep telling myself that I'm too old to try an learn a new skill. Heck, seeing this makes me believe I got 40 years of guitar playing ahead of me! Great post.

  • I bow before you, sire!

  • Jack, you're an inspiration to all of us drummers who are getting older. If I make it to 88, I hope I can jam half as good as you. You should try out for "America's Got Talent" and show them what it's all about. Rock on!!

  • Buddy Rich didn't die!

  • This guy has more groove than many of the young drummers out there.

  • Now try some black metal, grandpa!!! .... said his grandchild and the old man became a God.
