I was just watching a video about a museum of coin-operated machines and one of the machines is a little guy sitting in a bathtub eating spaghetti. Is this Gummo scene a reference/homage to that vintage coin-op machine? Link to the video: (watch?v=7IKloucc4Dk) with the machine appearing at 2:04.
If I should ever travel to Ohio (after my next holiday in North-Korea and a Liberian ghetto), the first thing I'll do is sit in some shit-stained bathtub and slurp spaghetti while washing my hair!
(Serious: if I'd ever see such a kid sitting in a bathtub, I'd do the sensible thing and dunk it's head under until there are no more bubbles).
@BustyGretchen Yes i know. I've seen alot of gore and yes it's disgusting and shit, but this is disgusting in another way especially when he eats that fucking chocolate ewwww
@sebbeas123 I don't like Mordum because of the shaky cam, I can't see almost anything. Very frustrating. And all the screaming doesn't do anything more than give me a headache, just like Scrapbook did.
i found this movie pretty good, weird, disturbing all in one. which made it quite good in the end.. i like movies that have disturbing real life content so it shows other people
this kid is doin it right brah, srs, but if i was him, id tell his whore of a motha to not feed me chocolate, instead gimma a phawkin protein bar, like wtf?
Respond to this video... @TheJaood This is the ultimate essence of poor white trash America. We don't even know the difference between conditioner and shampoo... we eat our dinner in bullshit old bath water.. yep. no really though = this movie makes a big statement about the poor in society, we ain't born with a shit ton of privileges,
@TheJaood The action of the film is taking place after a fucking tornado hit the neighborhood, killing many people and shit like that. Then all the rest began living a very apathic and nihilistic lives !
1st time I hated it, I thought it was ugly and pointless (I was like 13). Now I'm almost 20 and this movie really is beautiful. Makes me think of all those movies and music I dismissed because of my childhood ignorance.
it's almost a shame that this film has become a "teen go to movie". i mean, sure.. great. harmony korine gets more recognition and people are exposed to his amazing as fuck films but... it's kind of sad. sooner rather than later gummo is going to become just another donnie darko, or a clockwork orange... one of those movies that teens everywhere claim to love/ have seen/ whatever and it'll be cool to be a fan. i hate teenagerd of the 21st century. trend following & shallow.
@glompify i at 40 total agree, being a former fuked skater person,we always loved the '''fuked' stuff.....im gonna buy this and put it up there with the dark backwards !
@DonutsRGreat i'm the furthest thing from a hipster you will ever meet. ever. i just don;t like seeing fabulous movies get turned into shitty teenage fads.
oh but if we're making assumptions here, judging by your account channel i'd say... scene kid rat.. but hey? who's to judge?
@glompify You sound like a Hipster....which is as annoying as what you described here. What is really so bad about trend following? I am sure you enjoy some things that are trends. Come on now.
@CoopDeville13 it's funny cause you have never met me, you have never spoken to me, you don't even know who i am. you don't know what music i like, or anything at all really. all i am saying is that the fact that this movie is becoming a trend is a shame because soon it will be another movie people everywhere will claim to love, rather than people actually loving it. half the people who "love" this movie haven't even seen another movie by harmony korine.
I think iit's safe to say that you're still only going to get a certain cross section of teens who enjoy this film. I know a shit ton of people who have watched it but only a handful who enjoy it.
@CoopDeville13 Trends are usually followed to "fit in" especially when it comes to Music and entertainment in general. Many people...including myself like to idealize going against what everyone else is doing and be somewhat of our own person...Doing something for the sake of fitting in is a shallow concept that i try to steer away from.
@cosmosman going out of your way to be different from everyone is an equally shallow concept that has no real function in society other than to temporarily entertain people.
@cosmosman because 90% of the time people who "try to be different" either A.) just look like another group of people, B.) look retarded and C.) aren't actually being themselves. It's a pointless pursuit.
@ienjoypaninis i completely disagree. "look retarded" is not only an offensive terminology...but also a subjective viewpoint from a normative ideology.
And if you actually try to be different....instead of conforming to a group that calls itself non conforming....A. won't happen.
and i don't think you can accurately make the judgement that they aren't actually being themselves, you can only assume.
it almost seems like difference scares you. cool beans dude. cool beans.
@cosmosman not afraid of "being different" just simply bored of people being obsessed with it. It was something i thought was really cool as a teenager, but as you grow older you realize its just a fucking waste of time even thinking about "being unique".
Take your pseudo-intellectual hipster trash and shove it up your ass along with whatever useless degree you have, or are aspiring to achieve (see: art history, womens studies, sociology, any other field full of people who try to be "different")
@ienjoypaninis i'm far more bored with people who give up on attempting to stand out and make something of themselves instead of settling for the mundane. But i guess someone has to do it. quite honestly you sound jaded.
I'm going into the fashion industry. so yeah i guess that's pretty useless.
@cosmosman being yourself will, and always will be far superior to striving for uniqueness. 99.9% of people who "are themselves" have people who are just like them.
being different is just another word for attention whoring.
I have shared this movie with many, and of all the disturbing scenes it seems the bathtub scene apparently the MOST disturbing-don't know why exactly-I feel the same-yet can't explain the cause.
oh, and not to mention the absolutely filthy house. i just don't get it. everyone's different, but there's nothing i can think of about being poor that requires you to combine eating and bathing into one combined task. my early childhood was in poverty or near it even though i was too young to know it, and we never did this. wth???
wtf. i have now decided that my desire to see this movie has at least been heavily reduced. that bathwater is either in a neighborhood without a sanitary water supply, or that was one dirty friggin kid. and the fact that he still ate his candybar after it thoroughly dunked into the bathwater. oh wait. thats nothing compared to ***eating supper and getting your hair washed at the same time, all while still sitting in opaque dark brown bathwater***. WTF?!?!
@DanAmerican It's called a script, & this family is so poor, the kid is bathing in "dirty" water, which is actually coffee poured into a tub of water, to raise the awareness of poor family living conditions. Call it disturbing, disgusting and/or gross, Harmony Korine is brilliant when it comes to emphasizing dramatic effect & the movie Kids is another great example. Directed by the controversially-cinematic genius Larry Clark & written by Harmony Korine.
@AmbassadorKong lol you dont understand why? Well, look at the water he's in. How he's eating and packing together the spaghetti and chocolate... That's pretty nauseating.
This is so gross, how can someone take a bath with a brown filty water, and then eating spaghetti and chocolate with milk ,while your hair is getting wash ...gross gross
This scene was so disturbing, disgusting & depressing to me. I dont know why but something about this scene just makes me want to crawl out of my skin. The way he's eating is fucking vile & stuck to my brain for days I couldn't eat spaghetti & still get kind of grossed out to this day while eating it because of this damn scene. It's like his mom bringing him food & washing him was the only relatively normal and innocent scene in this film & even that was filthy & unsettling. It's heartbreaking.
This movie is... WTF... Why is he bathing in water that's frikkin brown, and eating dinner? It's disturbing... And why is there bacon taped to the wall? What does that symbolize?
@xXKatiebuggXx HK has been inspired by Larry Clark, who likes to film random things for dramatic effect. You know the boy w/ the bunny ears? Korine says in the Gummo DVD commentary, "we had a kid wear bunny ears because to be honest, I wanted to see a kid with bunny ears". If you film random shit but have good timing with it in the film & make it obvious that it's either for dramatic effect, is meant to symbolize something or pertains to the storyline, it can make it that much better.
i don't get why everyone is so shocked by this film, i saw it and loved it i thought it was one of the best movies i'd ever seen. this is definatley one of my favourite scenes too, it's anything but disgusting it's the sweetest scene in the film!
Gummo is about our lower class, the type of people we dont think about because it disturbs us, inbreds and life without purpose. this is what humanity is advancing to..
@TheOtium i meant this MOVIE is what mankind is heading towards, the same general outlook and behavior. just think if a nuke and/or a bunch of hurricanes hit,[or our currency collapsed] society would look like this across the globe. but any number of things could happen only time will tell
I am in love with this scene. Solomon is so beautiful and sad, look at the part where he is eating the chocolate, you can see all these mangled barbie dolls haha
The mom was a great actor in this film

i don't get why everyone is so shocked by this film, i saw it and loved it i thought it was one of the best movies i'd ever seen. this is definatley one of my favourite scenes too, it's anything but disgusting it's the sweetest scene in the film!

Gummo is about our lower class, the type of people we dont think about because it disturbs us, inbreds and life without purpose. this is what humanity is advancing to..

Humanity is advancing towards inbreeding and living without purpose?

@TheOtium i meant this MOVIE is what mankind is heading towards, the same general outlook and behavior. just think if a nuke and/or a bunch of hurricanes hit,[or our currency collapsed] society would look like this across the globe. but any number of things could happen only time will tell

@imdantheman89
If a nuke hit things would be far worse than this. This would be like high rolling in Paris.

I am in love with this scene. Solomon is so beautiful and sad, look at the part where he is eating the chocolate, you can see all these mangled barbie dolls haha
