Criminals wouldn't spend hundreds of dollars and go through paperwork to obtain it legally, they buy imported and stolen guns off the street and it's often cheaper. If laws were passed, only guns bought legally would be confiscated because they are registered. Guns bought illegally would still be in circulation because it's impossible to find them if they're stolen or unregistered.

As a former Chicago police officer, I can tell you that guns DO NOT belong in the hands of civilians. They simply don’t have the training and background to handle a deadly weapon. Witness the number of gun related violent incidents in the USA. I will do whatever it takes to remove guns from the general population.
