As I said in another post, passive safety is in direct relation to chassis engineering. So, the newer, the better. In these older models cabin compartment is not designed to withstand the extra forces of an offset impact, nor the front is conceived to absorb them before they deform the passenger cell. No airbags would have saved the driver, nor maybe the rear passenger behind him. Sad, but true.

ydea but think about this... you drive on the highways where every car are going in the same direction... Let say you are going @ 100mph and crash into a 60mph car, the imapct is 40mph, very survivable... but this test is done in a head on collision. 2 car @ 60 will result in a net 120mph impact... very different scenerios (even a 35mph head on will result in a full 70mph crash, yo can do the math.)

This clip is old but gets it right. i worked as an EMT and a 2 car direct head-on collision at 60 (like this video), though rare, is almost always fatal - even for Volvo's. That's why crash tests are done at 40mph or below - any faster and you get the result seen.

My point was that 60 is not considered fast for most people. Most drivers (> 85%, my est) drive 60 or faster on the expressway. Hence my response to your comment "You gotta be crazy to drive at that speed. "
