The above video version is a very popular meal and often requested on camp outs. We know many of you like this kind of food and thought we share one of our favorite black pot recipes with you. It is our version and we call it Humboldt Outdoorsman Special. Thanks for watching.....and remember, it's all about eating good in the great outdoors. OCIC Part III
We have many local mm & women who live off the grid in our area. It is a recipe enjoyed by hunters, lumberjacks, Boy Scout Troops, and others spending long hours outdoors. Not everyone who views this version may desire a meal with a high calorie/fat content. This version can be adjusted to suit your own dietary needs. Substitute with egg whites (or EggBeaters), low fat cheese, and meat substitutes as I often do. You have a choice of what you want to add in, or leave out. OCIC Part II
Thanks to those of you who like this meal. The title of the recipe says "Our Version" and that is just what this recipe is......our version. People reading this might be thinking of mountain men during the 1800's. The majority of the ingredients in our version would not be readily available or an option for a mm of the 1880's. This version is meant for those who want a hearty meal to sustain their energy level throughout the day. OCIC Part I
Nothing beats cast iron cooking! Everything here looked so good I wanted to eat the screen. LOL Thank you for posting this. It was wonderful to watch.
the only thing is in most of northamerica during the moutain man periode there wasnt any of this fancy bell pepper crap they had salt, lard, and maybe if they wanted to spent the extra money black pepper only spic grown would be sage and garlic in the north and some herbs
if you want real moutain man food look up traditional native american food like bannok, beaver and beans or stewed moose or elk jerky maybe squirrel with flour and pepper fryed in butter
I made this breakfast at a football tailgate last weekend, and had a line of people wanting to try it. Everything turned out great and the dutch oven was cleaned out quickly.
That stuff looked great... Im really getting into cooking with cast iron... I dont understand why so many people feel the needto bash on others but they do. I feel as we can all learn from each other and thats why I always say. Lets all learn from each other. Joe Tactical
This looks really delicious! Cast iron cooking is so much better for you than nonstick, which has harmful chemicals and is linked with cancer and Alzheimer's disease. This is a great recipe, thanks! How could we modify it to cook at home with a cast iron pan?
By cast iron pan, if you mean a skillet--a deep one would be good to use. Also, this was a big batch so you can scale down the size/portions & reduce the amount of ingredients according to the size of the pan. Cover with a lid or foil and bake in home range at the same temperature.
Gee I thought the "Humbolt County" special was something else and it is not light with a campfire... LoL.. I like that Tear Drop woody you guys have though..
congratulations you managed to make what us humans call an omlet in what looked like 3 hours instead of 20 minutes over what ancient men called a fire. absolutely genius
@born68 Absolutely amazing that you took the time to respond and that you make a dish called an omlet that is just like this!!! It never takes us 3 hours to do this recipe, but prep and cooking times vary from human to human. We make a skillet egg dish which you cook like a pancake, add ingredients to the middle and fold it over, We call THAT an omelet (or omelette). ;) Congratulations to you also.
@ many comments: A mountain man would trade fresh meat for "X" goods when meeting ppl along their way... or at an outpost. When that ran out he would have foraged greens and various game and whatever beans or flour he might be packing. But a Mtn. man breakfast is a modern contrivance made in a not-so-modern way for good taste and character, just like the teardrop camper- a throwback to good ol' pleasures. So the sources are irrelevant; "it's all about eating good in the great outdoors" :)
@sniper4202003 from his garden are you stupid ? Mountain men are and were survivalist hence a garden and of coursed trapping for meat. Anyway i think your confusing mountain men for campers ..some times their ill prepared.
yummy.. we use sausage or bacon (which ever we are in the mood for) and we top ours with green chilies and cheese. Sometimes we make breakfast burritos from it.
Took the family camping in North Alabama last week... tried this recipe and it was great... Went exactly as you demonstrated. I did mine in a deep 12" lodge and it fit fine. Thanks for your channel... keep the videos coming. You guys ever travel east and south? Would love to cook with you guys!
Love your version of the Mountain Man breakfast. I will be trying it. Hey Dean can you do a video explaing your dutch oven cooking table. Did you make it yourself? It does not look like any of the commercially available tables. Keep the videos coming. You have beautiful scenery where you shoot your videos.

Why to you put the potatoes in last?
brentaz66 4 months ago
@brentaz66
So they are on top of it and don't get too mushy or soggy. We have used different types of potatoes both fresh and frozen with this dish.
