I hope you don't make yourself miserable by focusing excessively on the competitive aspects of college. Believe me, no one will know, remember or care who is #5 vs. #25 vs. #50 in your class. As long as you get decent grades, don't worry if someone else is "beating" you.

Yep, college = culture shock. No parents to take care of you, no one tells you to study - you've got to do it on your own. And then there's the siren-song of those parties! It's why so many frosh either bomb out in the first semester or come home for Christmas 15 pounds heavier. My son did boarding school from 6th grade, so he had the self-control and study habits. Except for the pizza. He gained 20 pounds by Thanksgiving! (We gave him hell for it, so he lost most of it by spring break.)
