Good to see a young Gilchrist.I am a big fan of Gilchrist. He really looks so young and charming. We rarely see him defending a cricket ball like that, don't we.
Read Kingangad's post above and you'll see that I'm refuting that he sees Shane Bond in the vid. I'm not disputing that this is Gilchrist at all. It's obviously Gilchrist in this video
Sorry, silverchair84, but what's that based on? I dislike a lot of the Australian's, but there is nobody I can think of with Adam Gilchrist's talent mixed with so much humility. The man has changed the way the game is played and in that respect has had more influence than either Warne or McGrath. He always speaks highly of his colleagues and is respectful to his opponents, and I've never once heard him (or heard of him for that matter) acting disrespectfully toward anyone. So fuck off.
man that video is priceless where on earth did you find this its gold. i would bet gilly back then would more construct and sort of build his innings rather than destroy attacks and be the explosive batsman we all know him to be
Gilly is better than those guys ONLY because he was consistant in his big hitting, Afridi and Jayasuria, are inconsistant when they decide to go big. Afridi averages less than half Gilly anyways
@aussiestuff He may better than Afridi, but he will always be second, third, fourth, and then some to Viv Richards. Gibbs is a just a little bit better than Gilly.
"Gibbs is a just a little bit better than Gilly." - You mean the other way round, Gibb's would never be classed in the same league as Gilly, Gilly was just one-off & superior.
@Crkt4Eva yeah, no doubt, Gilchrist was destructive. Gibs had this uncanny ability. So, purely judging the both on ability, I would say Gibs had more. That's why I say Gibs is just a little bit better than Gilly. Only just. I guess since Gilchrist contributed with the glove too, he should get more marks than Gibs at the end of day. Although, Gibs was a excellent filder too.
Umm no hes the best hitter of his era. Afridi isnt consistent. Every bowler Gilly was the most feared batsman to come out at number 7... just amazing.
I wonder how many would have guessed at that time that he would end up being an aussie legend !!
If I'm not wrong, he was dropped from NSW and had to move to Western Australia before entering into the national side. This just tells you that having talent alone doesn't guarantee a success, and one must never stop trying !
He actually wasn't dropped from NSW, he decided to move to WA after being unable to usurp the NSW captain and wicketkeeper, Phil Emery. He was still able to play for NSW on his batting ability alone but he considered wicketkeeping his primary role.
i wasnt born yet. engaland be warned, lol, they must have taken the warning seriously and made him english like geraint jones when healy was at the top.
he was 17 turned 18 that year ...made his ODI debut ....7 years later in 1996 a month abt 3 weeks shy of his 25th birthday , he made his test debut a good 10 years after this interview in 99 a week shy of his 28th birthday .......
he had to wait up till Ian Healy hung his gloves ....!
As an Indian, I am so proud to see him take Dilip Doshi's name -- someone our own players have NO idea of...he appears to be so mature for someone so young...think about this folks 1988/89 was around teh time that Ian Healy started becoming a regular...& if I'm not wrong, Adam made his debut in his late 20s (29?)...so, he had to wait so long before playing with the big boys...I think excess cricket in the last decade and half or so has blunted our ability to appreciate the nuances of the game...
I used to have an old WWOS story be Ken Sutcliffe on the Aussie Cricket academy that included a very chubby leg spinner called Shane Warne (from around '87).
At one time, Gilly wanted to be the world's fastest bowler, but one day, he went to a sports shop in Victoria and saw a pair of shiny wicket keeping gloves in the display window. His parents returned to the shop later on and surprised him with them for Christmas that year (1981).
I read recently that he was miserable with homesickness during his time in England in 1989. You can kind of tell - he doesn't seem the smiley fellow we know now. I wish I could go back in time and give him a hug (and tell him to watch out for the swinging ball in 2005).
He was 17 and at times was homesick - no doubt about that. I never remember him being miserable though. Indeed he has often referred to that year as the most important one of his development. He backs that up now through the Adam Gilchrist Scholarship which send a young Aussie over the play for Richmond each summer.
Wow, fantastic find. I'd never, ever have guessed this was anywhere near as long ago as 1989, Gilchrist is so mature in every way. Wonder how many people would have thought it'd be 10 years and more before he made his Test debut tho.
great video...notice though that gilchrist didn't play a single attacking shot there! Just shows you need a good basic technique before you can start taking apart a bowling attack.
I love the last sentence: England be warned! I wonder if this Gilchrist bloke turned out to be any good for the Aussies:P. This guy changed cricket in many ways and its been a treat to see him play. It sucks that he's 36 now and we're only going to see him for 2-3 years. A gem!
His personality is great!
