This is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd hate to see him with both hands! The right hand barely moves while this is going on . I know guys who can't do this with 2 hands!(You can put me in that category, but I'm striving to do better!) Now that I know what I am up against,I better step up my game and get some steroids! LOL FAntastic! (& Beautiful! :~)
There's one cat out there that I know of that can actually play a rhythm with his left hand on the piano, and accompany him self with the trumpet with his right hand, Arturo Sandoval. When I saw this I was absolutely blown away. "Literally" Talk about a MASTER musician... WOW !!!
If uv ever played piano at all your jaw will be on the floor watching this. The complexity, virtuosity, and sheer musicality of it would be staggering were it played with two hands. Played by only one left hand -- and one brain -- it represents the outermost limit of human achievement in music. Absolutely impossibly amazing.
@yamhead2 Well, outermost limit... I wonder what Tatum, Phineas Newborn and Peterson would have been capable of. Let alone classical virtuosi like György Cziffra, Arcadi Volodos and Cyprien Katsaris. I heard the latter in concert; speaking of jaws on the floor!
@BuckshotLaFunke I can tell you from personal concert experience, Mr. Drew's classical technique like his Jazz chops are unrivaled among living pianists.
Mrstrings65. Nor would I disagree with you because my comment was based on what I have read moreso than what I have heard, and my taste lies rather with the father,s than the son' s playing. Yet this "Sophisticated Lady" version is as good as it gets. Stunning!.
Although I prefer his father's taste and his ballad playing more than Junior's it is generally believed ,in the business, that Jr. is the better jazz painist - Their styles differ but ithey are both superb. .
@golsno147 I would'nt say better, actually in the realm of bebop, his dad had a higher ranking than his son does in his style...perhaps technically he is superior but I don't think artistically..that is a widely held view among the musicians that I know...that is just opinion,so I am not saying you are wrong.
And yeah, I'm left-handed and I couldn't pray to ever be that dexterous with it. You have to be someone like him who pours his body and soul into it. For those who were present at this event, the amount of sweat was sheer evidence of how much he puts into his playing. Truly phenomenal.
Great performance and at my old school, the former St Petersburg Junior College now grown up and a four year institution. Clearly the music department has come a long way from the three person faculty that held forth in the late 50's. My old hometown with a Grand Prix and championship baseball team. GO RAYS!
How odd is it that I was just talking about my old friend, Kenny, to another person that worked with him. I grew up with Kenny in the Bronx and as teenagers, Kenny was and still is amazing. We were amazed back then as to how Kenny would play Chick Corea's music note for note at 17. I heard he moved to Florida and I haven't heard or seen him play in about 25 years until I received this video. Glad to know you're still a beast on keys Kenny.
must be left-handed (and very skilled..!) I've been playing jazz piano for many years and am left-handed. Several people have commented over the years... "you have a good left hand"... so, if your a lefty, your brain is able to connect better with that hand. My right hand playing isn't so hot. I'll bet you five cents he's left-handed. Great job.
Now do it without the pedal.

You're right - he's in a league of his own.
never mind that he can do all the technical stuff -
he plays more musically and swings harder than anyone out there.
deal with it.

This is an astonishing performance by a criminally underfamous artist.
Note: it's not just about chops, but lyricism and taste.
