(In mathematical terms) Spike = High Damage/Time ratio. As time goes to 0, damage goes to infinite (as shown here). Also a ranger spike wud fail against this as, as some1 mentioned before, it's AOE and thus disables the one being attacked from doing anything (except desperately trying to escape the stacking AOE damage).
A spike is a moment inwhich all teammembers inflict big damage at a single target at the same moment. This means it is very hard and sometimes impossible for monks to save the target.
In this movie we used rodgort's invocation and fireball, aoe spells with the potential to hit the entire team.

ok men, rodgorts is a very good skill but were in 2009 and there are many build to avoid ocurring this.
