With a film you have to "show" rather than "tell". The movie Contact failed for the same reason the movie of The Da Vinci Code failed: it's a thought-based plot rather than an action-based one. It simply failed to translate to film.
I theorize that ppl who dont like this movie are a bunch of ignorant rednecks. I also suggest that they go watch an action movie instead of complain about this one.

Im really interested in knowing why you dont like the movie "Contact".
Leaving the actors and acting apart, the story is awesome and it shows a lot about astronomy, in fact, this movie is based in the novel by Carl Sagan.
Well i suppose you dont like science or astronomy at all.

Well, it's a two-and-a-half hour movie where nothing happens and by the time that something happens, either you don't care anymore or you're asleep.
The ending sucked as well.
