At his autobiography, Agassi mentions about Muster's net compliment where he musses his hair nearly dislodging his hairpiece. And that got him so mad he primissed to never lose to him again. It's noticeable Agassi's face of disapproval after the hair touch.
Please bear in mind that tennis did not start with Nadal/Federer and will not end when these two are gone. There were many great players in the past. Judging them by today's standards ain't far given the fact how much the surface and string technology evolved. Rafa Nadal would have enormous problems to get through to the second week of Wimbledon in the 90's.
Muster was one of the greatest! Never forget, he had two great times! His first has been terminated as worlds number 6 by a drunken driver in flushing at the us-open. he had to fight back himself after a great fall down in the ranking after that accident and got it to hit the number 1!!! ... what a great figther, what an amazing player, what a terminator of tennis sports!!!! we should never forget this facts and never forget his heroic human being
Muster was the THE clay court player of 90's. It's irrelevant how many RG he won. In the 95-96 he was almost unstoppable on clay. I watched him play. His hame also evolved enabling him to play very well on hard courts in 1997.
@SolsburyHill22 you forget sergi brughera, probably the most impressive player on RG ; unfortunetly, massives injuries stops his carreer too soon...(won RG two times)
mousavsm, I love Nadal as well. But he has been winning on Wimby court that was purposely slowed down a lot. This comes from the guys who work on the grass there. Simply put, 150 mph Roddick serve today there is slower than 110 mph Edberg serve (due to court, look it up). You realize how much game has slowed down. Plus, they also flatten the court a lot to reduce irregular bounces, which helps baseliners a lot. Nadal would not have won old Wimby while staying 8 ft behind baseliner. No way.
Nadal would not have a chance on grass either if he played back in 90s. You do have to realize that racket technology has helped baseliner A LOT toward 2000. Plus they made the ball bigger and slower, especially at Wimbledon. That is the major reason why Nadal can still win on grass despite the fact that he stays way back in the court.
I don't know about nadal not having a chance, but I do agree about the wimbledon balls being ridiculously heavy. I bought some a while back just to try them out and it felt like I was hitting baseballs with the racket.
@SVolleyGame YOu must be kidding me, right? Nadal would have a chance in ANY era. Sorry but last I remember, every guy in a certain era plays with the same constraints and advantages. To say that Rafa is getting the benefit of heavier balls....I really don't see where this is coming from? I always hear excuses of why Rafa wins, why aren't there any of why others win? The guy is just that great, everyone always picking at straws...
Agassi wrote in his book about this that muster rubbed his head at the end of the match. This made him pretty annoyed as he did not like anyone touching his hair. still im sure those bad feeings are in the past now he retired
nadal has 6 majors...muster 1, so no not the nadal of the 90's. but muster had to deal with alot higher caliber of players. so many hall of famers in the 90's
i think he meant the style of playing the game is similar to nadal, and also he was the best sand court player of the 90s. the difference is muster is maybe the best sandcourt player of the 90s but nadal is the best of all time
@superman11978 muster was obviously an amazing player but how can you honestly compare him to nadal, granted this was posted 3 years ago lol, nadal has 10 grand slams at teh age of 25 and 6 French opens, thats right 6 french opens, sorry but muster not even close, not in grand slams, masters or any clay cuorts for that matter, also nadal has one all of the other grandslams proving hes not only good on clay
We called him Thomas "I´ll be back" Muster ;)

Agassi lost too many close matches at RG. He should have won multiple RG titles. Oh well.

notice how far back in the court agassi was. this is when he lost is way, failing too take the ball early , which was his point of difference.

The guy who comes off as the biggest jerk is Jimmy Connors by far.

Well, they highly respected each other, that´s for sure. But Muster was a Loner on a Tour with as good as no close friends.

I agree with superman about Muster being the Nadal of the '90s. Nadal is a much more complete player though. Muster didn't have a hope on grass.

True, except he wasn't dominant at RG; only 1 of his 44 titles (41 of them clay titles) came in Paris.

@superman11978 yeah the Nadal of the 90s with only 1 Roland Garros title. I guess Conchita Martinez was the Williams of the 90s at Wimbledon then.

agreed. Great claycourters in the 90's: Muster, Agassi. Bruguera, Courier, Kafelnicov, Kuerten, etc.
