  • Playing this for my jury this semester. :] This is such a good version of the sonata.

  • wow!!!!!

i'm learning how to play this.

to me this song is so beautiful

    but so hard. :):):):)

  • im 15 and i play this and it is not easy!!

  • i didn't know you have to play it this fast?!

  • @MsWongo you don't it is just simply his interperatation of it... There is a big variety of tempos that people play this, but I don't find any of them better than others.

  • Wow, this is more Mozart than Mozart... But it sure is beautiful!

  • Brilliant.

  • I was in fifth grade (11 years old) wen i used to play that. Oh boy i could do it :) But now, two years later, i don't think i can do it.

  • I remember I played it when I was 11.I just love this piece...

  • Is it weird that I recognized that it was Barenboim from seeing his hands in the preview in the sidebar?

  • Honestly, it's really annoying seeing as how people continue to criticize a comment months after it was made.

  • Any1 notice that the video is not in tune with the song

  • barenboim is one of the best performer for the beethoven piano piece!!(Maybe the best)

  • How can 16 people dislike this? Do they have ears?

  • love this <3 this is why I practice

  • Excellent interpretation and performance of this piece, even though it's not EXACTLY how I interpreted this piece (it really shouldn't be). In the first movement I like to play the call-and-response scales with the left & right hand more connected, as Barenboim plays them staccato. But still, very expressive and really captured Beethoven as an artist.

  • @linkdeas3 your suppose to

  • I've memorized this piece too, but I need to work on how I phrase it. I've been listening to Barenboim's preformance over and over, hoping I can learn somehting from him...

  • 15 people were acting cocky about playing this song fast even though they only kknow the first movement this guy's awsome!

  • Beethoven said Allegro ma non troppo. Is that enough clear ?

  • Musical genius. It doesn't come like this these days. Stop criticizing, and listen to the glory that is Beethoven.

  • is play back !!!

  • on what speed on metronome does he play it ? does anyone knows the exact speed ?

  • Apparently there were about 14 monkeys watching this video in the past.

  • very good

  • ¡El pianista es muy bueno! los matices, reguladores, trinos, mordentes, ligaduras etc todo perfecto. Ahora la imagen del vídeo no va con el sonido, el sonido va después.

    hay que arreglarlo.

  • Playing this piece for my RCM exam tomorrow. Love his interpretation! Thanks for the post :)

  • AAAAAAAA:() now I'm even more nervous, I have to play that piece at my school, but I'm not close to being perfect like Daniel Barenboim :(

  • I think they should rename this comment section.

There should be a box with "Participate In Argument Here:"

  • The stupid audio is off from the video :(

  • Good, but way to fast on the first movement, in my opinion. It is marked 'Allegro ma non tanto' and he seemed to play it 'allegro molto' :/

Still, good none the less :P

  • Is he even playing? Looks like a different piece his playing but they changed the music.

  • @brandonscherrer there is just a short delay between video and sound.. thats why it seems to be wrong :)

  • @jabba987654321 Ahh,,, Thanks.

  • the sound and video dont match up. just sayin. nice vid tho

  • He (jdmazzify) just takes everything too hard, he must try to be a little more polite, right? :) Maestro Barenboim is a master of Beethoven Sonati. One can prefer someone else's interpretations (as I prefer Brendel for Beethoven) but one should be respectful. He's no punk, is better than ANY teenager "performer". This is not a prejudice, this is an obvious fact.

  • I think all of you are stupid, honestly. You need to think, he is the one playing in front of all of those people. You are watching on your computers wishing you could be him. Learn to appreciate his artistic skill.

  • I find this to be rhythmically choppy: he doesn't transition well from the duple- to triple-metric that is part of the main theme. Also, he cuts rests too short, and thus the feeling is ruined for me. I'm looking at the score in my Elementary Advanced Piano Literature book, and he just doesn't play what is in the score, even dynamically. I like the way Beethoven wrote it better than his interpretation. Lastly, I just can't brook bad rhythm.

  • @jdmazzify I don't care how good this nine year old is, she CANNOT interpret it better than Daniel Barenboim.

  • @Mozart3150 One, your wrong. Two, your an imbecile to make a statement about someone you have no idea about. Three, probability suggests that your I.Q. is pathetic; unless of course, your currently listening to classical, which would raise it approximately 10 pts. and put you up to just stupid.

  • Actually, there's a 9-year old that I think can interpret just about anything appropriate for her hands at a professional level. Her name is Emily Bear. She was playing for presidents at age 6. She had her Carnegie Hall debut at 9. There is also a child blues guitarist that plays anything on the instrument on about the level of B. B. King in expressiveness. So, I tend to believe that a child can have the full range of emotional expression required for music, though it is extremely rare.

  • he's awesome!

  • In my computer, image doesn't match sound... as to his interpretation, ok, I just don't appreciate much the way he plays the musical ornaments, needs a litte more emphasys and some phrases seem to finish abruptly; but I repeat that in my computer image has nothing to do with sounds and I even doubt this is an original video, sounds overwritten...

  • very good

but it plays a wrong note

the stretch of the bar 22, the 3rd note of the left hand is a run there (sure would be a C #)

this passage is repeated more times and the error is repeated.

  • This is a cool performance very good performed

    and excecuted

  • i have to pee

  • @dc1041 too bad its 5 minutes long

  • @dc1041 thats nice to know

  • it only looks fake because the the sound lags behind him. If you look closely you will see that he plays something and the sound of what he just played comes later.

  • @bobbbbEE

that's because it's special type of performace piano,

it's supposed to mute the tone and lag.

i have the same type of piano.

  • @DMSarafina

    That was a joke, right?:-)

@bobbbbEE : It is only that the picture and the sound are not synchronized well, the sound is 2-3 seconds late. I'm sure you've experienced the same thing with downloaded movies and subtitles, when the subtitle came later or earlier than the actual speech.

  • @katalinkelemen i noticed that

  • I highly doubt that this is fake. What about the audience?

  • fake

  • Der Ton und seine finger sind nicht zusammen.

  • LOVE it

  • a pesar de que es una obra facil la complejidad esta en la interpretacion, una obra estupenda que viva beethoven!!!!!

  • ohoo.. I like it:))

  • theres no other who can compare to his skill in classical sonatas

  • fucking pianohomo play it right or don't play it at all thats what my momma always told me and i stand by it as sure as apple pie111111

  • hmmm

i was at a masterclass and i played this piece at around the same tempo wich is quite fast and faster than than the marking on the piece. i mean peersonally it sounds more flowing with the tempo faster, but the clinician grilled me on that aha

  • The video may not be the best, but the music is wonderful, just listen, don't look at the vid.

  • Everything is PERFECT; The only thing wrong is that the sound doesn't match up to the video, and it is off by A LOT.

  • Y does the old man keep on shuddering?

  • Love it! But the facial expressions are hilarious i swear

  • awesome)

  • he went into the second movement after the 1st...nice performance

  • ok the video is out of sync seriously the fingers dont match up to the song like the video is behind and the music is ahead in this video

  • @nachoburgalar

    This isn't a song, i's called a piece -.-

    But you're right.

  • 0:33 take a look at his hands. The audio isn't even with the original video. If it is, it's off by a lot.

  • around 3:35 its more obvious

  • Do you have ANY idea of what you're talking about? This isn't a regular punk on the piano... this is Daniel Barenboim. Same, no offense, but there's no 12 year old child who can interpret a piece like Barenboim does.

  • @TheGreatMirage I like your thinking, but I have to disagree. You're saying that an entire age can't interpret a classical piece professionally. I am 14 (yes, not 12), and I'm learning this piece. I cannot honestly say I can play as well or God-forbid as fast as Barenboim, but I could THINK about playing pieces with this emotion. Now, I agree that the average, punked-out 12yo can't process classical, but I have some talented friends that could more that EASILY play with this skill and virtuosity

  • @TheGreatMirage He plays like an amateur. He's a regular punk as far as I'm concerned. Daniel Barenboim needs to take some musicianship courses and learn how to transition from duple to triple metrics, because he rushes them so much that I can't bear to listen to this whole recording. Terrible!

  • @jdmazzify Don't worry, I hate his interpretations too. He gave masterclass lessons to Lang Lang. I think that explains a lot.

  • @TheGreatMirage depending how intricate your thought process is that is either a good thing or a bad thing, Maybe he's a slobbering idiot when he's at home alone NOT playing the piano and spends his time licking the walls, or maybe he spends his time enveloped in his curiosity, watching the grass grow. Either way I love you and think your the greatest.

  • @TheGreatMirage I know someone around that age who can play same way (with so much colour) but, of course, it's not his own interpretation....he was taught by his teacher what's right and wrong + he picked up much of how he played by listening to performances like this one (in other words...sort of copied)....I guess the piece was easy enough to be played well by a person of that age...and don't get me wrong...this perofrmance by Barenboim is very good and that kid loved it .....

  • @xxkeila123xx Its not about speed or mermorizing this piece its how about you play it .

  • @xxkeila123xx Can your friend play the third movement of the Moonlight sonata? No? Well Beethoven wrote that before he wrote the sonata played in this video but somehow he didn't think it was easy and not worthy for a pianist of his level to play. I bet you your friend can play it faster than Beethoven played it, too, well, congrats, let us know when your friend becomes famous.

  • @MaximPodolsky I've been playing piano for 11 years, and I still can't play it lol. I'll get there though, just watch me!

  • @xxkeila123xx honestly who cares if your friend can play it faster? the point of playing a piece to to play it at the appropriate speed, not play it as fast as you can. a lullaby for example would sound horrible if it was played fast. also if you didn't notice, in the video he has also memorized the piece.

  • @realmsoffire ur ryt. and ik, i luv how this piano player plays it. but all all was saying was tht my friend can play it faster, but it sounds horrible. The way i like music its when its played ryt.

  • @realmsoffire im am with you on that part cuz im 15 and i play this and it is not hard and i tried to play it fast and it sound terrible haha and its also about hitting all the right notes because if your in compitition and you hit the wrong notes than points get deducted

  • @alona1234561 not easy*

  • @TheGreatMirage No one can interpret it like Barenboim does, because he is his own person, he feels music in his own way. I can play this piece, and though my interpretation musically isn't the same, it isn't necessarily wrong. This interpretation I'll admit really shows off Beethoven in all his glory

  • I agree with TheGreatMirage here.

  • @majesticpopper I'd love to hear your sister play!

  • First movement is a beauty

  • Comment removed

  • you're right. but you don't have to be pianist to recognize that his fingers don't match up!

  • Lmao, stupid, this is why ur not a pianist, its called rubato, btw, all those idiots who think he's not playing well, ur stupid.... why the hell's he famous? for playing badly? Lol, if so, then theres no logic there.

  • not sync

  • Comment removed

  • skiper1701 is right. I play this piece and his fingers don't match up. He's clearly not playing the melody that was recorded.

  • Lol, can't you rather think that it's the *video* that is out of sync? This man is a renowned pianist performing Beethoven in front of a HUGE audience and you think he's not actually playing?!

  • der ton kommt ja erst sehr verzögert zum bild!

  • "can't recognize beethoven"

are you deaf? he happens to be playing a bit more forcefully than you're used to, but who are you to say Barenboim doesn't know how to play Beethoven? Just a guess, but if I may, I'd pose that he was the one with a bit more musical experience.

  • when you look at his fingers you see that it's impossible that Barenboim is playing the melody that was recorded....

  • Much too fast and not with enough love for the details! That's not Beethoven at all!! I'm sorry to say this but I really cant' recognise Beethoven in this regarding the way Barenboim plays (not "interprets") it!!!!!!!

  • is there another video (in a good quality!!!!) of this sonana?

  • jebenthan's Barenboim version of this.

  • The piece actually says "Allegro" if you look at the music.

  • No, it does not say "Allegro", it says "Allegro, ma non troppo" in the original edition. I bought the "Wiener Urtext Edition" which I believe is the best for Beethoven's sonatas.

Additionally, in many modern editions we read "4/4" time signature instead of the original "Alla breve". I always played the piece "in two", giving the piece musical flow, but always "non troppo".

At least Barenboim realised that it's to be played "in two".But still, it's much too fast, I believe("tempo giusto")

  • A+ for the persuasive essay?

  • That's up to you. I certainly am not the one to teach Barenboim how to play the piece.

I just wanted to share my opinion and I'm very much interested in what you all think about it....:=)

  • i fail to see how you can know fer sure how Beethoven would've played it seeing as this song was composed decades before you were even born!

  • First of all: Have you ever heard anything about "performance practice"?

Second: Why do you not just have a look at the "Urtext" edition?

As musicians we always have to be aware of the circumstances surrounding a piece of music.

By the way: It is not a song but a sonata!!! (since there are no words)...

    See my point?

  • This is not too fast.

  • Bit too fast he should slow down a bit.

  • wtf

  • Inspirational. Such overwhelming musicality!

  • Love how he puts so much colouring into the detail of this piece, even though it is relatively easy to play, he just takes it to a whole new level of expertise. (Take that, azn pianists who want to conquer piano by playing the most complicated pieces in the world without emotion) =P (joking-don't take it too seriously)

  • My bro best with emotion.

  • @M3ta1

    You're dumb.

  • The video is not synchronized!

  • For all of those people who say this is an easy song, I realize this is an easy song (because I can play it) but the musical details are really what you're aiming for. I know that there are hundreds of videos of children playing this song but I'd like to ask if any of them even succeeding with bringing out the dynamics or even adding their own ritardandos and whatnot. And for the whiney people who say it's lagging, I'm sorry, just deal with it or find a different video

  • well said!

  • well said :)

  • This is amazing playing. It's a real shame the video is a few seconds behind the audio.

  • I really like this piece :D

  • nobody cares wether you can play it or not, theyre here to enjoy THIS video.

if you can play it, post your own video or gtfo

    amazing performance.

  • aja-a

  • Its not easy to play it like he does in the video....

  • yup it's kinda easy...if you play it slow.

it's easy for people who'd been playing for years.

i could just play like him..not to brag or nothing

  • Well, yeah, for people who've been playing for years. I've been playing for 3 and I'm learning this after learning Mozart's K.545 and I think it will be easy to learn, but it takes lots of practice to play it at the speed he does in the video.

  • Comment removed

  • either the audio is really delayed or ahead, or this isn't actually him playing.

  • This guy is th shit, so strong in emotion of the passes, just look at his face.

  • Gosto muito deste pianista. Acho que ele tem muita sensibililidade e emoção ao executar até mesmo peças mais simples como esta de Beethoven. Para mim ele é espetacular!

  • cool performance... he's serious bout this. go Baronboim!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Very good! ^^

  • the music is faster than the fingering but overall it's very good

  • Comment removed

  • Love it^^

  • Another fine performance by Baronboim, Super job!

  • his hand does not follows the sound it is like playing something else. and a old master playing this easy song for a crowd is weird.

  • its a lag...duh

  • It shouldn't matter how easy the piece is--it's beautiful. Fur Elise is even easier, yet there are lots of pianists that still perfrom and record it.

  • I agree with your first comment, however this piece is simpler (for me) than Fur Elise...but good point! :)

  • Yea and besides you can always get pieces to sound great no matter how easy they really are. You could get twinkle twinkle little star to sound like a classical masterpiece if you're good enough and play the right emotions and such

  • Maybe this Piece is easy but can u play it that way ?

  • Never said I could? Just admired how pianists much greater in level than I am CAN play it that way.

  • I think 1fingerpianist told that to iceartic25 and not to you...

  • Wow, amazing! He is such a great pianist! :) He played musically and beautifully. I am especially stunned in this video when he played Tempo Di Menuetto. Never before have I seen someone who played this perfectly!

  • very original and "strange" seeing such an oustanding pianist as Barenboim playing such an easy sonata composed by Beethoven for didactical purposes, still attractive listening this sonata no.20, with all its luminosity, interior enchantment, long live ludwig van and mr barenboim

  • Grade 8 RC its in the old book :)

  • ;;;;

  • Does anyone know the grade of this piece??

  • eight

  • Comment removed

  • sorry osmeone already replied to u

  • Well, I learned this back when I was 16, doing around grade 5 - my eldest brother is a piano teacher and I asked him as I wanted to verfiy myself and he said grade 5 to 6...Bear in mind this is for us over here in the UK (i.e. the ABRSM) - the guys below saying grade 8 are referring to U.S. and Canadian grades so...? Hope this helps anyway! ;-))

  • AWESOME

  • lag in movie
