Kachyr, I don't read Russian even though my daughter is stuydying it with her best friend from St. Petersburg. So how about changing your comment to English? Spasibo? Steve
Steve: Your video is of a wonderful, traditional dance usually associated with western Ukraine. It is called the "Hopak", and numerous Ukrainian dance ensembles will usually close with this performance. My comment is written in the Ukrainian language and I wrote, "A beautiful and wonderful video, the Ukrainian girls are always so beautiful and cute with their bright colors! Very pleasantly, a friend from Canada". З повагою, Качур. Respectfully, kachyr!
To correct you, Kachyr, hopak is associated with central and eastern Ukraine, especially the Zaporozhtsi, rather than western Ukraine... Western Ukrainian dances would be the dances of tthe Hutsuls, Lemko, Bukhovinians etc., which are very different!
My mom was from Zhitomir, my father from Rostov na Donu. The hiearchy is this. 1. Don Cossack, 2. Kuban Cossack, 3 Terik Cossack, then everybody follows. Don Cossacks always defended mother Russia, the czars, and their families, no other Cossack did this.Don Cossacks were always a free people, riding in the steps of the Don river and trusting in god always. I was in the steps of the Don only last summer, stanitza Razdorskaya, center of Donskye Kazaki, near Cherkassov and all Atamani.
@kachyr I appreciate your enthusiasm for Ukrainian culture, but the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada has spanned 5 generations & the information you provided UnStevie regarding the origins of the Hopak was based on misinformation. The Hopak is a dance from Velyka Ukraiina (Poltava, to be accurate), not a Western Ukrainian dance. I am of Cossack lineage & can assure you that it is an Eastern Ukrainian dance, NOT Western Ukrainian!
My intention is not to be derisive, I assure you. Pryvit z avstralii!
@UnStevie Kachyr, while being respectful is, in fact, incorrect. The Hopak is from Poltava (near where Zaphorozhian Sich was). I am from Poltava & of direct Cossack lineage. It is NOT a Western Ukrainian dance but an extension of the Ukrainian Cossack culture in Eastern Ukraine.
While proud of his Ukrainian heritage, he is confused. The Ukrainian diaspora in Canada is huge & spans 5 generations. Their enthusiasm is laudable, but not always accurate!.. but we DO speak Ukrainian, not Russian.
Дякую діаспорі, яка так цінує та розвиває українські традиції. Приїздіть до нас у гості, а як захочете то й залишайтеся з нами. Вітання з України!
