Honestly, the desktop looke messier with fences... it becomes more poluted. For my use, i just rather have the dock, suck as Rocketdock or Smartdock or something like that and have a clear desktop view than have so many shi...t over the wallpaper. Well thats what i think.
Those fences are for placing all of the icons inside of reach, which does make these as inconvenient as opening plenty of windows. The comparing of those fences to windows opened with icon view is nicer, with the ability to close the fences more easily than a group of windows. I avoid having a large number of icons visible.
