it was written by Zappa to challenge the drummer. Zappa used to play the drums as his main instrument, then he took up guitar, therefore he has a really great idea where the real challenging moments come into play for a drumkit.

@drsoph2112 : re- "there was only one drummer who could play it." Terry did it first but Vinnie Colaiuta and Chad Wackerman played it pretty damn well, too. FZ always had top-shelf drummers, including Jimmy Carl Black, Aynsley Dunbar, Jim Gordon, Ralph Humphrey and Chester Thompson, among others. Hard to say who was best- probably shouldn't try. My favorites were Vinnie, Bozzio, and Dunbar, but you can argue for any of them. Point is, other seriously technical drummers can do it.
... it was named 'The Black Page' because of all of Frank's written musical dots of drum notes on the music sheet, there were so many, that the sheet turned into a mass of mostly black ... Lol
@foutupourfoutu yes, everything you hear that zappa has ever done, is written, and played note for note. That is exactly the way frank imagined it. I am referring to blackpages album version.
@analyzingfunny Yeah I knew all that. Was just telling people who think that this piece sucks as a solo that's it's written, witch makes the difficulty even more high
@foutupourfoutu also the fact that even with these crazy rhythms that sound like different time signatures, the solo is in 4/4 time. i'm in the process of learning this and it is a major mind fuck XD
@Hamgammy Because a lot of guys think this is just ramdom shit and that they can do it with eyes closed and arms tied in the back. Which of course is utter bs
Man! Are you really serious? You obviously don't know intricate, odd meter, very difficult drumming and talent that's for sure. Peart is nothing but a 4/4 beater hack! He could never do what Bozzio is doing here! Jeez! I can't believe that! Laughable!! Bum Bum pop, bum bum pop, bum bum pop, bum bum pop - Peart classic!
Well, I disagree that Neil Peart is a hack, but I DO agree that this is the most difficult, intricate, challenging and beautiful pieces strictly written for percussion. I have a biography on Zappa where he claimed he wrote this to try and "stump" Bozzio, but failed - so then he had to compose music to complete it, to which he claimed he would never attempt again - at least with Bozzio! I too, feel sorry for people who don't get it.
Great drum solo for drummer but the common Joe Shmo would be left scratching his head wondering why he is listening to a drum set getting kiCked down a staIrcase.
Remember - 'Those that can, get up and do it - those that can't, just criticise.'
- creditonhughes
Spot on. You never stop learning in music. Whether playing playing the simplest pop or rock grooves in 4/4 or other common times or the complex material that guys like Stravinsky, Zappa, Brubeck, Zorn et al wrote, and even various world music styles, a competent musician, no matter what you play does this: sit still, watch, listen and learn. And serve the music, not your ego, humility's a must!
@twooffour Of course there may be the occasional jaded professional who might seem like they're a constant critic, but they can be the exception rather than the rule. Usually you find those that speak ill of others don't often get asked to work a second or third time, whereas those professionals who keep their personal opinions to themselves and maintain a more positive attitude when working with others are the ones that keep getting referred for more work. It's how things are mostly.
Well, Mozart, Chopin and Schumann were widely known for being very critical of their peers, for instance.
But hey, seems like your point is that musicians refrain from criticing because they count on the fellow artists and employers to get butthurt over that (now TAKING criticism without personal offense, or refusals of cooperation, that's a virtue).
Rather than what your quote implies - that criticism results from lack of skills.
@twooffour Cool....which institution? I also studied marimba, drumset, and had started in marching group years back. I work as a drum and percussion instructor as well as being an active player, playing all styles, not just pop, rock etc. Apart from that I try and find time once a week to study Indian tabla, time permitting, as I've been collecting and own a number of ethnic percussion instruments, it's been an interest of mine for a long time. That and tuned percussion instruments, I own a few.
@twooffour Not a problem. I'm pretty open to all forms of music, various music theories and methods. Probably because as a kid I'd hear my mum play scales, songs from sheet music and so forth....she was classically trained up to the age of 17 before dedicating her life to nursing, but she still 'has it' when it comes to sight-reading. That probably in turn spurred me on to read for snare drum, which can only do you good for reading drumset, etc.
@MeinlBoy1 He's actually famous for two reasons, playing with Frank Zappa, and being a master of ostinati. The big kit may not be needed, but he does use it all at one point or another, and he does have skill, that is unquestionable.
Why do people like you even post? Just because you don't understand a subject, don't criticize the teachers. This piece was written for drums almost 30 years ago by a genius who knew there was only one drummer who could play it. There were so many time signature shifts and 64th notes clustered tightly together on the staff lines, it appeared solid black from a couple feet away - hence "The Black Page" This has challenged drummers ever since. Props to you when you can play it.
@Beaudereck CORRECTION I did write "signature shifts" in that post - I know it's all 4/4 He plays against the time, making it sound odd meter is what should have written. But thanks for the reminder - you guys know your stuff!
@WyattTheGuitarist Your'e right. It Is all in 4:4, it sounds in odd time as he plays against the 4 so masterfully. Have you seen some of the posts about "Sounds like a kit being thrown down the stairs" and Sounds like a rock thrown down a well" I guess I should watch Travis Barker because he has spark machines and his drum cage turns upside down. Wooooo mediocre AND un-original. I think Justin Bieber does a drum solo at his show! Why have I been challenging myself?! LOL
@drsoph2112 If you were to take MANY drummers and have their solos "written as a piece" they would be "challenging to other drummers" I think the reason he does not appeal to many people is his attempt at being so technical; and in doing so lacks any real "feel". That is the feeling I get. I mean he really has a lot of "haters" and I really think it is the "feel" thing. Music is enjoyed by more when it has a "groove" or "feel" etc etc. I do not think Bozzio has that.
Frank Zappa was a genius composer and performer. He always had the best of the best playing on stage with him. He pushed their creativity to the peak of their capabilities. Any drummer with half a brain will see past the technicalities of this piece and actually listen to it - it's genius.
Remember - 'Those that can, get up and do it - those that can't, just criticise.'
(con'd) .all this 'clinky, kooky' and even strained sounding hand parts all over the top of it, which to me, just screams "technical, for technical's sake" it isn't musical at all. it's merely an exercise, to show, "look how i can put 9 over 4, then change it up to 6 1/2 over 5 right here"..it's actually ridiculous, and i don't really see the point in it. further, to the listener's ear ( and i'm a very good 30+ year drummer) it just 'sounds' like a fucking rock being tossed down a well...
It only looks like that if you don't consider that this was composed by Zappa, who himself could never play it, specifically for Bozzio and Ruth Underwood to play. It's meant to be "technical" and was part of Bozzio's audition.
@julianisdope Lol! yeah, how so "Julian is DOPE?" Lol! are you kidding me? dude, have another consideration of your stupid username, and then, think about asking that question again?
what's wrong? my very concise, and quite accurate description of a silly, 'over-the-top' stupid drum solo, really get to ya? Sit down, punk ass.
@drumdude46 nice, the only thing you could come with is something about my user name on youtube. I didn't know that a user name reflected something on the person. You however still sound like a child. And i don't give a fuck about you not liking a drum solo, everyone is entitled to an opinion. But for someone who has been playing for 30+ years(which is real easy to say on the internet) i would think you would be more humble. Also i didn't ask a question. Punk ass lol
1. if you want have a valuable and clear argument you must at least learn how to write let alone learn the proper use of quotation marks. you know, " " <---those.
2. if you dont like it and it annoys you THEN SHUT UP AND GO LISTEN TO STEVE GADD OR SCREW IT, GO LISTEN TO LADY GAGA
although quite a story in it's day amongst other musicians and drummers alike, with the heavy "Lore" behind it and all ( Oohhh....Scary! Lol!) somehow now, watching this, it's just seems, well....sort of stupid. yeah, it's difficult. Ok. and i understand Zappa Wrote all this. and for what? seems almost for the "inside joke" purpose ( probably Acid, or some kind of Hallucinatory Drug, Induced) of 'testing" his drummer. but... it's even kind of Kooky sounding, and 'makes no sense?
@drumdude46 Neither Zappa nor his musicians did drugs. Do your homework before risking an opinion. Yes, it's an "inside joke" if you want to call it. Others, the most erudite, would call it an étude. Wikipedia that word. Zappa was not interested in making music that would sound "cute" for the common ear. He wanted to explore how far and how deep his musicians could reach with his compositions. That's the difference between a true composer and whoever writes for Justin Bieber.
@Zappamaniac well, i stand 'sooooo' corrected sir. Lol! before i respond, i see that your username "Say's it all". ok. i'll be reasonable here. i've seen that clip many times before in my perusing on Youtube...and watching it again last eve, i suppose found myself in a mood that, "wasn't jibing' with watching Bozzio ( already known for this type of playing anyway- yes, he's incredible, but....jeez..) it just annoyed me, somehow. sluggish Hat 2/4, while he scatters all this (con'd)
@Zappamaniac It is true Zappa was not into drugs (although he did refer to tobacco as a vegetable), but certainly many of his band members were. It was a recurring problem over the years, and Zappa mentioned it on many occasions. It pissed him off. Certainly you had to have been on your game when playing for Frank, which precluded drug use in any consistent manner...
@dridethepresident His words: "I've smoked about ten marijuana cigarettes in my life. And they've given me a sore throat, a headache, and made me sleepy. I can't understand why anyone would wanna use the stuff. It seems such an impractical pastime as you can get sent to jail for it."
@Zappamaniac ... really wel said man!!! i always tried finding an answer like that to does ignorant people who say the same thing ...but now i have an answer....
Thanks for pointing that out for people who are not as familiar with Zappa's background and his thoughts about music and the other projects he worked on.
But on a side note... At least Justin Bieber accomplished already he is in every other YouTube comment, so good for him ^^
@Zappamaniac Although Frank Zappa did not use drugs in an addictive sense... Owlsey Stanley gave him a lifetime supply of LSD in 1967. My source for that is personal, but well connected and believable. Frank's denial of drug use was more about keeping his personal life personal and keeping his credibility. He wasn't about to be part of the turn on, tune in and drop out movement, he was much too smart for that. But to say "Frank didn't use drugs at all" is false.

@samk069 It's nice to know that your personal, connected and believable source is so well-informed. It would be also nice to know how to store LSD, such a fragile substance, in a way that it can last for a lifetime. Finally, it would be really nice to know someone like Owlsey Stanley who would just give me that amount of LSD. Where could I get in touch with a guy like that? I'm not being ironic here, it'd be delicious to have the great Zappa as an LSD icon, just to rub it on people's face.
@Zappamaniac You took that a lot better than the Ted Nugent fans did when I told them that his tour nurse from the 70's told me that she ran more I.V. meth in that man's legs than she thought would be humanly possible. The only reason he's still alive is because he was lucky enough to afford private and confidential transfusions but that he was crystal meth addict of the worst nature. The Nugent fans wanted to skin me alive.
@inFAMEmx That's a regular hi-hat with a remote pedal linkage. It's made of OBSIDIAN and one of a kind; but nothing's marking quarter notes, he's doing that with his foot. Absolutely unfathomably hard.
The fact of the matter is that this is a WRITTEN piece of MUSIC. Terry is playing the ideas that Frank wanted to hear and share with his audience. The size of the kit does not matter, it's the skill of the one playing the kit that does. Now, try playing the marimba part. I have a copy of the music and it IS a black page lol.
Technically this guy might be a god, but for me a musical piece is something that takes you away into another world. Music is a thing that gives you a warm feeling. The one day it can be Jazz, the other way it can be classical and the next day it can be electronical music. This type of music doesn't do it for me on any day. For me, music is all about repetition. The art of this piece lays in the part that he can remember all the damn notes...
realdrummer110 has disliked this video 63 times and has yet to post a single video of his electrostatic nuclear drumming techniques, or his magical pink unicorn.
Never dis a composition by Zappa. Just don't do it.
The biggest thing that really gets me isn't the complexity of the playing or the odd beats, but that he's keeping tempo constantly with his left foot throughout it all without wavering. As a drummer of 10+ years, I know how ridiculously hard that is, and so that's where Terry Bozzio really gets props from me.
A san fran drumming master!

Bozzio is and will remain as a very Special human being in my life time. .
(No disrespect to Neil Peart ).Neil also moved me at a certain time in my life ( Old Rush records still amazing)...not in Terry's league
Comparing Neil to Terry?? No comparison.sorry
The thing Bozzio really oozes out is feel and groove (People have forgotten that) because he is challenging himself to be different.
Terry is sort like Miles Davis.... he really challenges himself.
A true artist, not just a drummer!!!

... it was named 'The Black Page' because of all of Frank's written musical dots of drum notes on the music sheet, there were so many, that the sheet turned into a mass of mostly black ... Lol

Do you guys know that this solo is a WRITTEN piece?
foutupourfoutu 9 months ago 41
@foutupourfoutu
Yes it is.
manticore1962 5 months ago
@foutupourfoutu yes that is the sole reason it is so infamous. also it is all in 4/4... try and figure it out.
antifacistppl 5 months ago
@foutupourfoutu yes, everything you hear that zappa has ever done, is written, and played note for note. That is exactly the way frank imagined it. I am referring to blackpages album version.
analyzingfunny 4 months ago
@analyzingfunny Yeah I knew all that. Was just telling people who think that this piece sucks as a solo that's it's written, witch makes the difficulty even more high
foutupourfoutu 4 months ago
@foutupourfoutu also the fact that even with these crazy rhythms that sound like different time signatures, the solo is in 4/4 time. i'm in the process of learning this and it is a major mind fuck XD
pwnage51 3 months ago
@foutupourfoutu yea, why are you pointing out the obvious?
Hamgammy 3 months ago
@Hamgammy Because a lot of guys think this is just ramdom shit and that they can do it with eyes closed and arms tied in the back. Which of course is utter bs

Peart does things more complicated than this. For example his solo running over a beat in 3/4 time. This is not impressive.
Blackshayde 9 months ago
@Blackshayde
Man! Are you really serious? You obviously don't know intricate, odd meter, very difficult drumming and talent that's for sure. Peart is nothing but a 4/4 beater hack! He could never do what Bozzio is doing here! Jeez! I can't believe that! Laughable!! Bum Bum pop, bum bum pop, bum bum pop, bum bum pop - Peart classic!
sjsazy 9 months ago
@sjsazy You clearly don't listen to much Rush.
SpockstarRockstar 8 months ago
@sjsazy yeah jazz drummers usually do play 4/4... moron
SeniorJuniorSenior 8 months ago
@sjsazy

And serve the music, not your ego, humility's a must!
hamjamnspamalot2 10 months ago
@hamjamnspamalot2
What the HECK?? The musicians that "can", criticize all the time.
twooffour 9 months ago
@twooffour Of course there may be the occasional jaded professional who might seem like they're a constant critic, but they can be the exception rather than the rule. Usually you find those that speak ill of others don't often get asked to work a second or third time, whereas those professionals who keep their personal opinions to themselves and maintain a more positive attitude when working with others are the ones that keep getting referred for more work. It's how things are mostly.
hamjamnspamalot2 9 months ago
@hamjamnspamalot2
Yea, sure, if you need to pay your bills...

@twooffour Do you work as a drummer or percussionist? In what area of music, or are you studying at the moment?
hamjamnspamalot2 9 months ago
@hamjamnspamalot2
The question is relevant how? I study harpsichord at a conservatory. Currently recovering from a tendinitis.
twooffour 9 months ago
@twooffour Cool....which institution? I also studied marimba, drumset, and had started in marching group years back. I work as a drum and percussion instructor as well as being an active player, playing all styles, not just pop, rock etc. Apart from that I try and find time once a week to study Indian tabla, time permitting, as I've been collecting and own a number of ethnic percussion instruments, it's been an interest of mine for a long time. That and tuned percussion instruments, I own a few.

Church music conservatory in Ratisbon - at least at the moment.
twooffour 9 months ago
@twooffour Not a problem. I'm pretty open to all forms of music, various music theories and methods. Probably because as a kid I'd hear my mum play scales, songs from sheet music and so forth....she was classically trained up to the age of 17 before dedicating her life to nursing, but she still 'has it' when it comes to sight-reading. That probably in turn spurred me on to read for snare drum, which can only do you good for reading drumset, etc.
BTW, Ratisbon, whereabouts is that? Europe? :D

Your'e correct...my bad. I should have said he plays against the 4 signature in time and it sounds in odd signature. Good call.
BondoramaMusic 8 months ago
@Beaudereck CORRECTION I did write "signature shifts" in that post - I know it's all 4/4 He plays against the time, making it sound odd meter is what should have written. But thanks for the reminder - you guys know your stuff!
drsoph2112 5 months ago
@drsoph2112 Actually im pretty sure i read that its all in 4/4... its just absolutely crazy. xD.
WyattTheGuitarist 8 months ago
@WyattTheGuitarist Your'e right. It Is all in 4:4, it sounds in odd time as he plays against the 4 so masterfully. Have you seen some of the posts about "Sounds like a kit being thrown down the stairs" and Sounds like a rock thrown down a well" I guess I should watch Travis Barker because he has spark machines and his drum cage turns upside down. Wooooo mediocre AND un-original. I think Justin Bieber does a drum solo at his show! Why have I been challenging myself?! LOL
BondoramaMusic 8 months ago 3
@drsoph2112 There are no time signature shifts in this song, it´s straight 4/4 all the way through. Do your homework.
matheusdf1234 7 months ago
@drsoph2112 The whole thing is 4/4....
Hodge329 7 months ago
@drsoph2112 If you were to take MANY drummers and have their solos "written as a piece" they would be "challenging to other drummers" I think the reason he does not appeal to many people is his attempt at being so technical; and in doing so lacks any real "feel". That is the feeling I get. I mean he really has a lot of "haters" and I really think it is the "feel" thing. Music is enjoyed by more when it has a "groove" or "feel" etc etc. I do not think Bozzio has that.
jordanjcm 6 months ago
@drsoph2112 actually the entire piece is in 4/4. only the subdevision would change. still crazy stuff >_<

Frank Zappa was a genius composer and performer. He always had the best of the best playing on stage with him. He pushed their creativity to the peak of their capabilities. Any drummer with half a brain will see past the technicalities of this piece and actually listen to it - it's genius.
Remember - 'Those that can, get up and do it - those that can't, just criticise.'
creditonhughes 11 months ago

@drumdude46 nice, the only thing you could come with is something about my user name on youtube. I didn't know that a user name reflected something on the person. although quite a story in it's day amongst other musicians and drummers alike, with the heavy "Lore" behind it and all ( Oohhh....Scary! Lol!) somehow now, watching this, it's just seems, well....sort of stupid. yeah, it's difficult. Ok. and i understand Zappa Wrote all this. and for what? seems almost for the "inside joke" purpose ( probably Acid, or some kind of Hallucinatory Drug, Induced) of 'testing" his drummer. but... it's even kind of Kooky sounding, and 'makes no sense?
drumdude46 11 months ago
@drumdude46 Neither Zappa nor his musicians did drugs. Do your homework before risking an opinion. Yes, it's an "inside joke" if you want to call it. Others, the most erudite, would call it an étude. Wikipedia that word. Zappa was not interested in making music that would sound "cute" for the common ear. He wanted to explore how far and how deep his musicians could reach with his compositions. That's the difference between a true composer and whoever writes for Justin Bieber.

@Zappamaniac well, i stand 'sooooo' corrected sir. Lol! before i respond, i see that your username "Say's it all". ok. i'll be reasonable here. i've seen that clip many times before in my perusing on Youtube...and watching it again last eve, i suppose found myself in a mood that, "wasn't jibing' with watching Bozzio ( already known for this type of playing anyway- yes, he's incredible, but....jeez..) it just annoyed me, somehow. sluggish Hat 2/4, while he scatters all this (con'd)
drumdude46 11 months ago
@Zappamaniac It is true Zappa was not into drugs (although he did refer to tobacco as a vegetable), but certainly many of his band members were. It was a recurring problem over the years, and Zappa mentioned it on many occasions. It pissed him off. Certainly you had to have been on your game when playing for Frank, which precluded drug use in any consistent manner...

The Nugent fans wanted to skin me alive.

The fact of the matter is that this is a WRITTEN piece of MUSIC. Terry is playing the ideas that Frank wanted to hear and share with his audience. The size of the kit does not matter, it's the skill of the one playing the kit that does. Now, try playing the marimba part. I have a copy of the music and it IS a black page lol.
masterhead4888 11 months ago 2
Technically this guy might be a god, but for me a musical piece is something that takes you away into another world. Music is a thing that gives you a warm feeling. The one day it can be Jazz, the other way it can be classical and the next day it can be electronical music. This type of music doesn't do it for me on any day. For me, music is all about repetition. The art of this piece lays in the part that he can remember all the damn notes...
