Its a common term, kind of like how so many people call vultures "buzzards," when a buzzard is a type of hawk that lives in Europe.

Jaguars and leopards both have a genetic mutation not present in other big cats that makes some of them dark, its sort of like albinism, but not quite as rare. And even though they are dark, the spots are still visible in the right lighting, so they aren't solid black like some people think.
