I would never claim that Elling sings out of tune, or even off key, but I still find his voice irritating to the point where I can't abide listening to him. I guess, as my grandfather used to say, that's what makes horse racing.

He's one of the most on tune vocalist in jazz history!!! Those critics without support and knowledge, I encourage you to listen more music to educate your ears and understand what jazz is about, not everything in jazz is about listening the new "bossa jazzy versions" of 80's songs. Cheers!!

@AznLoLStar Dude... A diminished key couldn't exist because it would never resolve. The whole reason tonality (the system of which major and minor keys function) works is because the chords eventually resolve. Diminshed chords consist of stacked minor third intervals, and diminished scales are based of symmetrical patterns consisting of either whole step/half step or vice versa. Diminished chords are utilized as a dominant function or pivot chord, and are not possible to use as a tonal center.

@ProgThrasher6666 also, the diminished key is used fairly often in jazz and i remember learning a bit about diminished scales in jazz class(just a short discussion). i think it was something about jazz improvising and how diminished scales provide almost infinite possibilities. so i'd say that even though during the common practice period diminished keys were thought of as "not real" but now its perceived differently. i will still ask in person to be sure though

@AznLoLStar You're repeating yourself at this point. Just because there's a scale or chord with a name, doesn't mean a key can inhibit. Yes, there are diminished scales and they have been used frequently since the beginning of the 20th century, however you can not be in a diminshed key. Google it and save yourself the time and energy.

@lesatz4 Por regla general no soporto el country, ni tampoco me gusta el rock, quizás alguna cosa... aunque considere que hay temas buenos, pero ¡¡NO ME LLERGAN!! Lo mismo que la música étnica o anglosajona. Me decanto por la percusión y por los temas "ondeantes", donde no sólo la música sea relevante sino también la voz. La letra para mí es secundaria. En el caso de "April in Paris" me encanta como se ajusta la VOZ de de K. Elling al tema. En fin, nada más que decir. Un saludo!!

Mr. Elling is one of the most important jazz artists of our time. Thank you so much for this posting. I appreciate the fact that he uses the full range of jazz techniques to keep this genre of music alive. His use of the "blue note" is especially appreciated. While it may sound off key to the uninformed, the true lovers of jazz understand.
