I would never claim that Elling sings out of tune, or even off key, but I still find his voice irritating to the point where I can't abide listening to him. I guess, as my grandfather used to say, that's what makes horse racing.
To all you people saying he's out of tune, I've seen him live and the double bass player used his voice to tune up his instrument so i don't think he's out of tune!
He's one of the most on tune vocalist in jazz history!!! Those critics without support and knowledge, I encourage you to listen more music to educate your ears and understand what jazz is about, not everything in jazz is about listening the new "bossa jazzy versions" of 80's songs. Cheers!!
@shmeeonceagain Though he is in tune, most people who know shit about music wouldn't find your opinion remotely valuable seeing as there's not such thing as a "diminshed key".
@ProgThrasher6666 o.o no diminished key? then what are diminished scales and diminished chords? for all i know when a minor interval is lowered by a half step, it becomes diminished. to me it sounds like you're NOT one of the "most people who know shit about music"
@AznLoLStar Dude... A diminished key couldn't exist because it would never resolve. The whole reason tonality (the system of which major and minor keys function) works is because the chords eventually resolve. Diminshed chords consist of stacked minor third intervals, and diminished scales are based of symmetrical patterns consisting of either whole step/half step or vice versa. Diminished chords are utilized as a dominant function or pivot chord, and are not possible to use as a tonal center.
@ProgThrasher6666 as i just graduated high school, on august 22nd, thanks to my band director, im going to be able to meet a professional musician(her husband o.o). i will ask him and see what he has to say about that.
@AznLoLStar Feel free to do so if you so chose, the simplest would be to google it and you'd see that no such thing exists. Also, diminished intervals are created when lowering perfect intervals by a semitone, not minor intervals.
@ProgThrasher6666 thanks for correcting me and i googled it and during the common practice period(1600-1900) it was considered dissonant, unstable, and lacks tonal center because the diminished fifth symmetrically divides the octave. however
"In [rock and] pop music, the diminished triad nearly always appears on the second scale degree, forming a generally maudlin and dejected iio with its members, 2—4—♭6."Ex. Santo & Johnny's Sleep Walk, Herb Alpert's "This Guy's in Love with You"
@ProgThrasher6666 also, the diminished key is used fairly often in jazz and i remember learning a bit about diminished scales in jazz class(just a short discussion). i think it was something about jazz improvising and how diminished scales provide almost infinite possibilities. so i'd say that even though during the common practice period diminished keys were thought of as "not real" but now its perceived differently. i will still ask in person to be sure though
@AznLoLStar You're repeating yourself at this point. Just because there's a scale or chord with a name, doesn't mean a key can inhibit. Yes, there are diminished scales and they have been used frequently since the beginning of the 20th century, however you can not be in a diminshed key. Google it and save yourself the time and energy.
@ProgThrasher6666 looks like mixed up diminished chords from my high school jazz class and diminished keys. you were right. still change the fact kurt elling is a living legend and sings in tune :)
Mr. Elling is one of the most important jazz artists of our time. Thank you so much for this posting. I appreciate the fact that he uses the full range of jazz techniques to keep this genre of music alive. His use of the "blue note" is especially appreciated. While it may sound off key to the uninformed, the true lovers of jazz understand.
Me gusta cómo canta porque es sensual, ondeante y le da un toque muy personal al tema, precisamente por ello me gusta en esta canción, en otras sin embargo no lo percibo de igual modo.

The singer sings the straight line but it is the pianist who gave it the hip new sound. The drummer isn't that good
freeqwerqwer 2 years ago
