wow i've finally understand this song. I'm living this life right now, exactly as hes singing it. I've met a beautiful women that I love dearly and have given up my dreams and aspirations. So has she. We both have jobs that we both dislike... I used to be in shape when i was young, now i've kinda just went with the flow and not in shape anymore and whatnot... This song is timeless. It really puts it all in perpective, thank you Jackson Browne.
@dukeofearlful My husband says he identifies with this song. We've been together since we were 20 (him) and 21 (me) and I wouldn't change a thing! Neither would he. Life...We've had hills and valleys but we still love each other. Life is not Disneyland but it still can be wonderful. I look back and smile...

@jezdukowski plus every radio station pretty much is owned by clear channel so thats why we here all the same old junk.one of the best things a parent can do for their kids is keep them away from popular culture like mtv,vh1,certain movies and fake radio stations.
I love this song. I am going through some very hard times now. I am on depression and anxiety meds too. I havent had a lady in my life in years and years. I listen to good music like this to help get through my days and nights.
@SraCollum What a claim to fame! Love your story. I met J.B. after a concert in the U.K. a few years ago and he invited us inside the stage door out of the rain, to sign our albums/autograph books etc. Great music!
this is the saddest song I have ever heard. I just feel so empty after hearing it. Not a bad thing, by the way. When your music consistently evokes strong emotion in the listener, you are a real artist.
@Boohbahnooh Really? I find it a bit more hopeful than that. Regardless of interpretation, though, I think we can all agree that it's a fantastic song. :)
@Honeydew7396 I interpret this song as a loss of youth. It's like when you're a teenager, you're so free. You can spread love, mess with mind-bending drugs, and build amazing relationships like you really can't do when responsibility creeps up on you. It feels like the pretender is that one person caught in the day-to-day grind but still burns for that same youthful freedom, to be able to really live without any fear or preoccupation for just one more day.
This is such a powerful song ! My all time favorite ! The music is fabulous but the lyrics will speak to you and all who listen know of The Pretender inside them and life goes on, Are you there for The Pretender ? Say a prayer for The Pretender !
Please.Please. All you super intelligent people out there.could you please build a time machine?Just turned 53 and this song really hurts. Great memories.
@istaph - Sorry istaph, but now that scientists have shown that individual protons can NOT travel faster than the speed of light, it looks bleak for the possibility of time travel. Unless we can find some weakness in the space-time continuum we are on our own...
It describes the shitty predicament western society is in perfectly. Consumerism, materialism rule while we forget what we really are: Spirit, pure loving energy. We pretend that we're just made of flesh and bones which is farthest from the truth.
@TonyBurke100 It's not just western society these days, its the whole world. The ex-communist countries of Eastern Europe and Russia society are just as materialist as the West. South America is booming (especially for the rich) , the Arabs love their bling even more than anyone else, and aren't the Chinese and others discovering a love of making and spending money, and proving very good at it? These places are the big growth markets for all the 'luxury' brands, from fashion to cars...
You say Hannah Montana, I say The Rolling Stones
You say Owl City, I say Led Zeppelin

95% of teens these days listen to the same crappy pop over and over again. If you're one of the 5% who still listens to real music, thumb this up, then copy & paste it to at least five videos. Don't let classics die
Jackson Browne and Dan Fogelberg taught me so many things about life from their profound lyrics in their wonderful songs! I discovered both as a young teenager, and my life has been the better for having knowing their music! Love and peace to you all! Love, BobbyK And don't live life as a pretender! Peace! :+)
I love songs that have a meaning behind them. This song, to me, is about the daily grind. Getting no where, working hard for money, doing the same thing every single day.
This is one of those songs I heard my parents play when I was little kid. A year or two ago, I just listened to it myself. I'm not sure if there's a single song since that time that has received a larger amount of playtime than this one. When I walk out into a cool night, I can't help but think of the pretender
My dad, listened to amazing music my whole life. He always turned down the radio and after 3 beats ask "what song is it?" I now know what I like about music. I will tell you this is not only the story of my life. It is the song I want for life! I am a happy idiot, struggling for the legal tender. Thanks Jackson Browne. On top of that thanks to all my favorite musicians in the world. Peter Green, Eric burden, Brian Wilson, Harry Nilssen, Jackson Browne, Ray Davies, and all of Steely Dan.
Jackson Browne is a totally amazing songwriter and singer, I have been listening to him since 1974..... And I got the pleasure of seeing him in concert 3 times.
Absolutely Beautiful Song! Jackson Browne was the first musician I saw in concert...think I was about 9 or 10 - so over 15 years ago lol. He signed a book of his guitar music for me. :-)
Saw him in Phoenix on his "An Evening With Jackson Browne" tour. Was amazing still sounds great, couldn't believe how amazing of a show it was, and he was 62 part of a dying breed in music.
@peggymcallister, there are still artist like this quality, you just have to step out of the mainstream. Jackson has had some time to get some recognition and is easier to find because of this. Might I suggest Dan Bern to you? God Said No, or Remember me are good songs to look at.
this song pretty much laid out my life, worked my nuts off, many wives later, life turned out to be quite satisfying, once the gold-diggers realized the pretender was "the man"
In 1977 I thought this was the best song in the world, though I was sure it would be a bizarre period piece after a few years. But somehow it hasn't dated at all--in some ways it resonates more now than it did then.
When I'm feeling sad I come home and turn on this song... God how I love it. It makes me feel so much better. I am 15, and I am a proud 70's music lover.
@NimirRaCyndal I first heard Jackson when I was 18 that's 45 yrs ago and you'll be doing the same. I've got every album he ever cut. What an amazing talent. You might give Hal Ketchum a listen.

I want to know what became of the changes
We waited for love to bring
Were they only the fitful dreams
Of some greater awakening
I've been aware of the time going by
They say in the end it's the wink of an eye
How can something so profound be summed up in so few words?
