  • I want to know what became of the changes

We waited for love to bring

Were they only the fitful dreams

    Of some greater awakening

I've been aware of the time going by

They say in the end it's the wink of an eye

How can something so profound be summed up in so few words?

  • What an incredible work of art, the lyrics and the music are perfect together. The truth spoken here is ageless and immediately relevent to us all.

  • sigh-h-h-h Jackson Browne can evoke memories from back in the day when people were

less self-absorbed. Yet another legend of that era. Late at night, Time Travel is possible

    with this fella. yeah !

  • yeah me too.

  • Some of the best lyrics ever written.

  • That's Jeff Porcaro on the drums. R.I.P.

  • wow i've finally understand this song. I'm living this life right now, exactly as hes singing it. I've met a beautiful women that I love dearly and have given up my dreams and aspirations. So has she. We both have jobs that we both dislike... I used to be in shape when i was young, now i've kinda just went with the flow and not in shape anymore and whatnot... This song is timeless. It really puts it all in perpective, thank you Jackson Browne.

  • @dukeofearlful My husband says he identifies with this song. We've been together since we were 20 (him) and 21 (me) and I wouldn't change a thing! Neither would he. Life...We've had hills and valleys but we still love each other. Life is not Disneyland but it still can be wonderful. I look back and smile...

  • @deb741 Oh, and now I am 60 and he's almost 59. It's been a great life full of mostly good things.

  • another of his greats " These Days " he is awesome huh gang ?

  • everyone of us can relate to this song.

  • @goodthing52 That's why many Jackson Browne's songs go straight to the heart!

  • thanks to Danny Barr (atlanta Ga.) I was introduced to this great artist and song.U.S.S. Forrestal C.V.59 1976. great memories and music. thanks again.Paul Jarrell(navarre,Fl.)

  • JB never grows old, songs like this r 2 good

  • Why don't we have music like this these days? Corporations

and marketing have turned us against each other. Capiatilsm sucks, more specifiably, Crony capitsalism sucks. End of rant. Great song, Jackson.

  • @jezdukowski plus every radio station pretty much is owned by clear channel so thats why we here all the same old junk.one of the best things a parent can do for their kids is keep them away from popular culture like mtv,vh1,certain movies and fake radio stations.

  • Okay I'll say it: I love this man and his music and he should be named "St. Jackson of Browne..."

  • great album, listend to many times. friggin great memoris of hash, nimitz, forrestal, iwo jima,

  • my dad, god rest his soul, (died 2 years ago) used to play this for me when me and he were drinking

  • @drklnk23Your dad was probably a really great person. Sorry to hear about your loss.

  • Un très beau souvenir de jeunesse...

  • I love this song. I am going through some very hard times now. I am on depression and anxiety meds too. I havent had a lady in my life in years and years. I listen to good music like this to help get through my days and nights.

  • @holtridge I can relate...tambien...good luck my friend and who needs it

    more than us.

  • @holtridge Forgive me, but if you're not tied to home I suggest Thailand. I'm completely serious.

  • @holtridge keep on keepin on

  • amen. we have all been here.

  • @SraCollum What a claim to fame! Love your story. I met J.B. after a concert in the U.K. a few years ago and he invited us inside the stage door out of the rain, to sign our albums/autograph books etc. Great music!

  • @SraCollum oh my gosh that's incredible!

  • i just found this LP at a record store for 3 dollars. still sounds incredible

  • Amen occiabella!!! I miss Dan!!!

  • @bensdadfrank Are you Fawn Hall?

What does Col.North have to do with this, or you?

  • Jackson Browne - thank you very much for this song

  • This song describes the conflict that is life. Hegel would say the man who wrote it touched The Idea. I would agree.,

  • this is the saddest song I have ever heard. I just feel so empty after hearing it. Not a bad thing, by the way. When your music consistently evokes strong emotion in the listener, you are a real artist.

  • @Boohbahnooh one of my favorite songs ever

  • @Boohbahnooh Really? I find it a bit more hopeful than that. Regardless of interpretation, though, I think we can all agree that it's a fantastic song. :)

  • @Honeydew7396 I interpret this song as a loss of youth. It's like when you're a teenager, you're so free. You can spread love, mess with mind-bending drugs, and build amazing relationships like you really can't do when responsibility creeps up on you. It feels like the pretender is that one person caught in the day-to-day grind but still burns for that same youthful freedom, to be able to really live without any fear or preoccupation for just one more day.

  • @Boohbahnooh I always wipe a tear after this song.

  • just listened to this song ten times straight. cant get enough of it. jackson, u are a brilliant man

  • The couldn't make music like this today if they tried.

  • this is one of my all time favs ,my ex and me ,cryin everytime i hear it.....amerigas love forever.

  • this is one of my all time favs ,my ex and me ,cryin everytime i hear it

  • this song IS me---not shocked to discover i had a price, just disappointed at how low it was. . .

  • dont live life as a pretender...

  • WOW

  • true classic...amazing still true today...

  • Thanks for the posting I forgot about this one :)

  • It' right up there with The Boxer, by Simon and Garfukel. Don't sell out kids!

  • For those who haven't heard them, I also recommend Rock Me on the Water and Here Come Those Tears Again. Great music from Jackson Browne.

  • eXtremely Powerful song

  • I'm not a JB fan, sure other songs he's done I'll hum along to while in the car, but this song strikes my heart as total truth

  • This is such a powerful song ! My all time favorite ! The music is fabulous but the lyrics will speak to you and all who listen know of The Pretender inside them and life goes on, Are you there for The Pretender ? Say a prayer for The Pretender !

  • Please.Please. All you super intelligent people out there.could you please build a time machine?Just turned 53 and this song really hurts. Great memories.

  • @istaph - Sorry istaph, but now that scientists have shown that individual protons can NOT travel faster than the speed of light, it looks bleak for the possibility of time travel. Unless we can find some weakness in the space-time continuum we are on our own...

  • Heard this today out in the pool w/ the wife.Good times....

  • this song is so refreshing..;)

  • lost my father today. He was country to the bone but I have caught him listening to this tune over and over and over

  • Probably the 1 song I've listened to more than any other for the past 30 years. Fairly decent. ;) .

  • @dff454534 Me too! There's really been nothing to touch it.

  • amen! say it again.. AMEN.

  • such a an amazing human being thank you Jackson Browne

  • It describes the shitty predicament western society is in perfectly. Consumerism, materialism rule while we forget what we really are: Spirit, pure loving energy. We pretend that we're just made of flesh and bones which is farthest from the truth.

  • @TonyBurke100 Never forget what you and people really are

  • @TonyBurke100 Comments like yours restore my faith in people!

  • @TonyBurke100 It's not just western society these days, its the whole world. The ex-communist countries of Eastern Europe and Russia society are just as materialist as the West. South America is booming (especially for the rich) , the Arabs love their bling even more than anyone else, and aren't the Chinese and others discovering a love of making and spending money, and proving very good at it? These places are the big growth markets for all the 'luxury' brands, from fashion to cars...

  • We Love you Jackson, for giving us this *

  • Jackson has more insight on the human condition than a room full of psychiatrists with Phd's.

  • its been a dream, sometimes a nightmare

  • the most amazing songwriter, most amazing human being ive encountered in a long time. he,s truly like no other.

  • Real singer & real human !!!!

  • this song totaly changed how i looked at who i was in the seventies. thank you so much for leading me into adulthood. Always.

  • Definition of Singer/Songwriter !!! Superb.

  • I'll have this played at my funeral---story of my life

  • 3 people are pretending to dislike this song

  • jackson browne= boss

  • I could play this song forever

  • The best "like to dislike" ratio I think I've ever seen on a video...a testament to the near perfection of songwriting and musical performance

  • Great song Jackson!

  • The songs are so relative to many, they're like horoscopes...but accurate.

  • This has great sound quality. Thanks

  • Jackson Browne and Dan Fogelberg taught me so many things about life from their profound lyrics in their wonderful songs! I discovered both as a young teenager, and my life has been the better for having knowing their music! Love and peace to you all! Love, BobbyK And don't live life as a pretender! Peace! :+)

  • @bobby7771117 hell ya

  • I love songs that have a meaning behind them. This song, to me, is about the daily grind. Getting no where, working hard for money, doing the same thing every single day.

  • An awesome song that brings me near to tears.

'caught between the longing for love and the stuggle for the legal tender'

Amazing when a songwriter can put into words what you can't.Absolute genius.

  • This is one of those songs I heard my parents play when I was little kid. A year or two ago, I just listened to it myself. I'm not sure if there's a single song since that time that has received a larger amount of playtime than this one. When I walk out into a cool night, I can't help but think of the pretender

  • My dad, listened to amazing music my whole life. He always turned down the radio and after 3 beats ask "what song is it?" I now know what I like about music. I will tell you this is not only the story of my life. It is the song I want for life! I am a happy idiot, struggling for the legal tender. Thanks Jackson Browne. On top of that thanks to all my favorite musicians in the world. Peter Green, Eric burden, Brian Wilson, Harry Nilssen, Jackson Browne, Ray Davies, and all of Steely Dan.

  • 3 people are Pretenders.

  • Jackson Browne is a totally amazing songwriter and singer, I have been listening to him since 1974..... And I got the pleasure of seeing him in concert 3 times.

  • This was and continues to be an incredibly beautiful and touching song...I'm going to use it in "17 Minutz" soundtrack...

  • •●♥ Inspiradora tu canción para acompañar y hacer volar al sentimiento

  • jackson browne is the shit!

  • kool

  • This, to me, is seventies American rock. Such a classic voice.

  • this song says all that I can't.

  • Great Song.....Brings Back Many Memories

  • Absolutely Beautiful Song! Jackson Browne was the first musician I saw in concert...think I was about 9 or 10 - so over 15 years ago lol. He signed a book of his guitar music for me. :-)

  • The 3 idiots whom dislike this song are fans of 80s music, whom don't know shit about Jackson Browne or the greatness of 1970s music.

  • The 3 idiots whom dislike this song are fans of 80s music.Enough said.

  • Saw him in Phoenix on his "An Evening With Jackson Browne" tour. Was amazing still sounds great, couldn't believe how amazing of a show it was, and he was 62 part of a dying breed in music.

  • what 3 idiots disliked this

  • This may be my favorite song ever written.

  • THANKS FOR SHARING THE INFO ON DAN BERN!! HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY!! :)

  • Lady Gaga = TOTAL PRETENDER

Jackson = the real deal pure MUSICAL TALENT

  • this song is love.

  • Jackson never got the respect he was due

guess its cause he got the looks, but Bruce got the cool

  • A great American poet..... Jackson's work will always resonate.

  • The only good song from this album. His other early stuff was awesome.

  • wish there were still songs and singers like jackson browne. this song is awesome.

  • @peggymcallister, there are still artist like this quality, you just have to step out of the mainstream. Jackson has had some time to get some recognition and is easier to find because of this. Might I suggest Dan Bern to you? God Said No, or Remember me are good songs to look at.

  • im rick james bitch enjoy ur seves

  • this song pretty much laid out my life, worked my nuts off, many wives later, life turned out to be quite satisfying, once the gold-diggers realized the pretender was "the man"

  • just enjoy the music it still sounds pretty dam good !!

    Frankie

  • the best song ever !

  • After all these years, this song is awesome!!

  • In 1977 I thought this was the best song in the world, though I was sure it would be a bizarre period piece after a few years. But somehow it hasn't dated at all--in some ways it resonates more now than it did then.

  • 1:44 gives me chills!

  • I must be getting old it seem like it was yesterday that LP came out

  • My sixth favourite song of all time

  • Jeffrey Thomas Porcaro on drums.

  • When I'm feeling sad I come home and turn on this song... God how I love it. It makes me feel so much better. I am 15, and I am a proud 70's music lover.

  • @NimirRaCyndal I first heard Jackson when I was 18 that's 45 yrs ago and you'll be doing the same. I've got every album he ever cut. What an amazing talent. You might give Hal Ketchum a listen.

  • @BerrysJSRD Thank you, and I collect LP's myself, have been for two years. I asked my mother only for albums this christmas. Thats all I want... And I will check out Hal Hetchum :D Thank you! :D

  • @NimirRaCyndal I'd love to hear what you think of Hal. Great singer song writer in a country / folk genre. Thanks for the reply.

  • Sweet!!

  • say a prayer for the pretender!

  • I love foo fighters, but their pretender doesn't have anything on Jackson's pretender

  • Jackson Browne is undoubtedly the greatest lyricist modern music has had the great fortune to know. This song is proof.

  • @OUSoonerinDFW you wish!

  • Have always love your music, Jackson!! Thank you for the insight...as painful as it is, I appreciate it!!

  • @sos1881 your a dope

  • @edmm976 You meant to say, "you're a dope." :)

  • @blueanimal Ha! Ba-zing!

  • @sos1881 Why not? Oh come on, it's easy: "Are you there???

Say a prayer for the Pretender"!!!

  • @sos1881 Have you heard the acoustic in Britain, he explains it too. Heartbreaking.

  • Did not get any lyrics at this site but still love love love this song. What an amazing, insightful and deep songwriter. I recognized it then and it still holds the test of time. Whats the saying? As much as things change, they stay the same.

  • In '65 I was seventeen, in '69 I was twenty one. I loved this song in seventy seven, my favorite........ I still can't figure out why someone would put sunglasses on when they made love, (guilt?) LOL.......!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • hard to believe he did some crap called lawyers in love when he wrote something like this-what the hell happened?? but he was gone after that lawyers in love crap....

  • Say a prayer for the Pretender.

Who started out so young and strong ,

    only to surrender.

Say a prayer for the Pretender.

Are you there for the Pretender?

  • The first time I heard this song I was flying from New York to London in 1977,I put those huge tubes in my ears and this was the beginning of a great relationship with this singer songwriter.I Love every song on this album but this song really hit me hard,it was as if the man knew me...So many years ago yet,it seems like yesterday...Are You There for The Pretender....Say a prayer for The Pretender.

  • This song is Great.

  • Love Jackson Browne!

  • So glad you posted this song, it's my friend Ryan's favorite song. He likes to take online quizzes.
