@WrestlingHeretic Carroll O'Connor was in a contract dispute and missed four episodes; this is the fourth of four. Supposedly, Norman Lear threatened to kill off Archie if O'Connor didn't return to work. I'm sure they were scrambling to come up with a storyline to explain Archie's absence.

At. says "When the show came back for its fifth year, he was in a contract dispute with Lear, who wouldn't allow him to appear in two episodes in the beginning of the 1974 season. Eventually, O'Connor got a raise and appeared in the series until it ended."
@msk7046 Yeah, and according to Norman Lear, the audience went wild when Carroll O' Connor finally walked through the door because they weren't sure if he was coming back and if they didn't settle the dispute, Archie was going to be killed off the show. I'm glad they settled! The show would not have been the same without him!
If Norm Peterson had married Edith, Archie would have been the barfly in Cheers (arguing with Cliff, exchanging insults with Carla) and Norm would be home with his family.. (sharing one fridge with meathead)
Only Archie could love such a dingbat as Edith and only she could love a person like Archie they really married well. Both of them would have made other people crazy. These are great episodes where is Archie and then the longest kiss.
Well, in all fairness, back in the seventies, not many women her age and economic status could keep up her looks. From what I heard, she was quite the looker in her youth.
Edith had inner beauty, and that trumps all those house dresses and home perms.
Every time Archie's not on the screen, all the other characters should be saying "Where's Archie?"
