Notice that it's not Richard Eden playing Robocop when he's swinging on the wrecking ball. Stunt double Ken Quinn was in the suit - you can tell by looking at his mouth, he really doesn't look much like Eden at all. His face and jaw just doesn't fit the suit the same way as Eden.
You can see him playing Robo at various times during almost every episode.
... and BTW this looks like one expensive shoot especially for a TV show!
Well, my only explanation to why Robo would grab onto the wrecking ball is so that Pudface wouldn't have to tear down the entire building with him and Jimmy in it. Think about it - if Robo just dodged the wrecking ball, he and Jimmy would be running for their lives and Pudface would have to destroy the entire building to get em. But since Pudface is only after RoboCop, he'd rather face the wrecking ball than endanger Jimmy any further.
hi, yes, i must admit, it was kinda stupid to take a hold of the ball while he could have simply walked to the window and shot the metal rope with his enhanced electronic targeting ability to cause the ball to drop on the ground
that's pretty much why i didn like the serie contrary to the movies, i noticed to much innacuracy and mistake were made, such as this one
i think this is more realistic. dropping 120 stories down, without a scratch or internal damage is really unlikely. for example, robocop has a human brain, it never could have survived the shock from the impact.

I remember this scene...

It's just my two cents...

*sigh*... "Genius trap."
He's laughing because the site of Robocop unnecessarily dangling from the wrecking ball is genuinely hilarious.

unless it was encased in something that absorbs the impact in which case it would survive the shock of impact
