  • Really sexy!

  • Man, this woman was so ahead of her time. This vid and song still hold up today.

  • Soo good, so brilliant, SO SEXY! A great cover of one of my favourite of my hero's songs!!!

  • Sept 22, 2011, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TONI BASIL

  • whoa that dude @ 1:17 is the same dancer that General Boy is controlling in DEVO's "Girl U want" video..nicccccccce

  • 2 dislikes have a problem

  • Holy shit Tony Basil entangled in venetian blinds, holy shit

  • Now we know where Matthew Barney got all his ideas . . .

  • Where do I get one of those dogs?

  • @accusationChair Well, the Life expectancy of a Dog is about 14 years... so they're dead now ha ha

  • @accusationChair I am the taller dog and am alive and well :-)

  • @pallypoo123 A well trained pooch, certainly not a dog. Great work and cute too!

  • Always loved her. Didn't understand why she was a one hit wonder. Word of mouth was one of the best albums of the eighties.

  • Scuse me miss, you see to have a slat stuck to your boob.

  • Oh, hell yes!

  • This song is Kick Ass. I cant get the devil out of my butt. Its possesed by some boogie, funked up freak. Fresh . even by todays standards.

  • I love youtube..lol....I haven't heard this since middle school

  • i have no idea what to make of any of this

  • Ok now i am totaly confused. There seem to be 2 slightly diffrent version of this video. Those poodles are really really good dancers.

I can't believe how she wasn't bigger than she was. Her dancing is unusually good. I am really shocked.

  • @Tampa0123456789 Yes,, One was remade for the BBC (To give it a more ENGLISH feel and connection, it's all about money ya know)

  • @Jazzy9964 Thank you, Tampa :-)) I didn't know there was another version made for BBC, do you have it, Jazzy?

  • @pallypoo123 i just viewed other version for BBC on another channel . . I had nooo idea it existed! Shabba Doo was dancing in that version (he's not in this version)- it's cool- but I like this one better :-)) different- more -warm fun vibe

  • @Tampa0123456789 Well, she is a well renowned choreographer though..in fact much of the later work you would see through more famous artist were her back scene work...she's worked with several celebrities.

  • Sept. 22, 2010 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TONI BASIL

  • I miss original stuff like this.

  • Hehe love the Pink Poodles! If I am not mistaken Toni Basil worked with Devo on choreography. Man these trend setting videos crack me up.

  • hehe. I love the Pink Poodles!

  • @gamegurl666 thank you :-) i am one of them<3 it was so great to work with Toni

  • @pallypoo123 Did you say that you were one of the dancers? How did she get so many high level dancers; with people like MJ and others competing for dancers too. I am sure they must of paid a lot more than Toni Basil could?

Not one dancer in this video is below standard in their perticular style of dance.

Was that guy shabado? Were those girls from a Ballet? Every dancer was at the highest level.

I use to think janet/paula was the best but not anymore.

Tony would of crush janet and paula.

  • Uh oh, which one is the original?!? Devo or Toni Basil?!? I like both now. [totally confused smile]

  • @Khultan Devo is the Original, as a matter of fact Devo is Playing the music on this video for Toni

  • @Jazzy9964 Nice : )

  • @Jazzy9964 Thanks, Jazzy.

  • post-modernism at its best - excess and genre busting stuff! Now I know where so-called innovators like the performance artist Matthew Barney nicked his ideas and visual aesthetics from! All is regurgitation it would seem?!

  • Now that is how you do ballet with hip hop not just another pop singer from the 1980's but a professional dancer in classical dance, and one of the founders of a style of hip hop, ha who said whites cant dance. She is a ledgend in many ways with a real dance tallent and good singing voice as well as doing many famous works behind the scenes putting it together.

    Signed Jeremy popergerm

  • This is the video that drove Al Gore nuts. Probably was the poodle girls that pushed him over the edge.

  • Is she not men??

  • This is great! I didn't know Toni Basil made vids for these Devo songs. Devo rules, as does Nagi Noda, if y'wanna see more poodles: Poodle Exercise with Humans

  • Wow! I wasn't aware of the Toni Basil vids of these Devo songs until I got linked here from a Tomoe Shinohara site. She's insanely great, as always! What's she and her talent up to these days?

  • I can't take the poodles!

  • @kookooboy I can't either! They freaked me the crap out.

  • wound up in their lead, forever vital collared poodle puppy and primarily pink... you gotta hand it to Basil, with her SM wink...

  • I'd love to see a DVD release of this!

  • Wow, how did I miss this video? This is one of my all-time favorite Devo songs, and this cover version was terrific. I just love all the dancing!

  • Nothing against Toni Basil. She's a good singer and sings this one pretty well, but I like Devo's version better.

  • This song is about "Addiction" whether it be Drugs or Sex, depends on who you ask....

  • The song is about de-evolution

  • A subject you are familiar with judging by your channel JLO- That vid on trains has to be the most bizarre piece of work I've ever seen. Your either somehow brilliant or

have deep psychological issues. One or the other.

  • It took me on my puppy dog trip... if it's about addiction, dance can be addictive too.... probably a healthier uplifting addiction in moderation.... it did come out about the same time as people were dropping dead from a certain STD in NY now I think about it...still love it today...

  • @Muddyw67

Hey, now! Don't insult DEVO, this is a great song. :)

  • @evelau

great song eh...wow..we have really dumbed down

    in our expectations.

  • @Muddyw67

Well, have you at least heard the original?

  • I searched for it but never found it. I think

80's music was soulless and empty for the

most part. Devo was novel but nothing

    special.

  • @Muddyw67

I would actually agree about 80s music in general. As for DEVO, soulless, maybe deliberately, but unlike other bands in the era, they actually had something to say and they had interested aesthetics that they brought forward. But I can understand not liking them. You should check out the live performance of "Smart Patrol / Mr. DNA" though, it's like the anti-Whip It. :)

  • I meant interestING aesthetics.

  • since you've been such a thoughtful poster I watched the live Devo

clip. They were original for sure but there's just so much tri tones

and diminished chords I can take before reaching for my Effexer.

This track was really alienating,at least in its sound without really

delivering much. If their lyrics had any content they were drowned

out by an awful din. I'm able to listen to Stockhausen and Bartok

string quartets without any side effects but this stuff just bugs me.

  • @Muddyw67

Haha, fair enough, thanks for giving it a shot! (You're wrong, but that's okay. ;-) )

For the record, I can't stand Stockhausen. And trust me I've tried. As far as classical music goes, my favourite is Shostakovich.

I have really eclectic tastes, I just feel a biological need to defend DEVO...

  • YeaH Stockhausen is a difficult listen and I don't do it often-once a decade I think. I saw Stockhausen in London in the late 1970's which was pretty cool. I also like Shostakovich although I prefer the French impressionists like DeBussey. What is this biological urge to defend Devo? Something to do with estrogen or testosterone? In my case I find their music depletes my serotonin levels. I think your loyalties are misplace but that too is ok :)

  • @Muddyw67

I like Debussy too. But there is something about that exaggerated Russian enormity that I like in Shostakovich's music.

I don't know if my urge to defend DEVO is hormonal... I just think everything about them appeals to the dadaist nerd in me. I just love them.

...man, isn't this refreshing? A difference of opinion on YouTube that turns into a civilized exchange rather than a (grammatically incorrect) insult contest?

  • @evelau

It's wonderful when that happens I agree Its a shame its so few and far between and so far away .I get the eccentric appeal of Devo-I like Peaches for similar reasons although she breaks down social conventions far more wittily I think.

  • @Muddyw67

I like Peaches. But I'll argue that if DEVO hadn't done what they did as early as in the 70s, there would be far less elctro-punk type of acts today... And as far as breaking social norms, DEVO have always done it in an insidious and humourous way, whereas Peaches uses shock value a bit. But yeah, I like her.

  • @evelau

That's probably true-I mean Lady GaGa owes a lot to Peaches in terms of visual style so I can see the antecedent back to Devo who seem rather tame in comparison. Peaches is about liberating sexuality for woman although not in a strictly feminist way. No doubt she would hate that label (or any label) I like her minimalist approach to music Maybe I'd just rather consume female art then male right now. I loved early Alanis Morrisette who was thoughtful and creative.

  • Great video, I like the tune and the dancing. Great job Toni and Pallas! Very classy ending,

  • It's not really a bad video... its just a bit... odd... and that makes it kinda funny. She was (is?) one of a kind!

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY TONI BASIL (Sept 22nd)

  • Now that is bad video.. I like it she is pretty cool i am gonna check her out

  • I was in community theater in the summer of 83 and we used to play this album to do our warm ups to! Brings back memories..

  • Hey--Works for me! :) Great vid!

  • Hey bugland23--is pallypoo123 legit?

    Hey, I believe in Santa....LOL :)

  • Pallypoo123 has commented on a few other Toni Basil Videos that I posted. She says somethings that make her seem Legit. So, I have to take her word for it.

  • Hi y'all I have no reason to yank yer chains!I had a really long and diverse career as a dancer, Toni Basil (respect) Breakin'II Electric Boogaloo (with Toni's Shabbadoo) 'Salsa' vids include Rappin'Rodney,Cher,Scorpions, Pia Zadora :-))LOL..films and vids were my side gigs- primarily career as a classical ballet dancer and choreographer...brilliant Toni remains still fairly underground-I remain honored to have been a part of this dance history w/ Toni- knew her since I was about 8 years old:-)

  • LOL.....er...maybe pallypoo123 is yankin' our

chains just a little (or a lot)???

    I beg forgiveness if

i'm wrong....but if you were the poodle,

what brand of biscuits did Toni serve

    when the video-shoot wrapped?

P.S. If you were the poodle.....WOW!!!!

    Holy Huckleberry!

  • Poodle Girls are strangely compelling.

Heaven help me, did i just type that?

  • I was thinking that myself.

    Oh oh!

  • Did the Devo Team direct

    the video too? Seems very

    devolved like them...or

    just another permutation

    of contact mutation? Or...

    did she shape their videos'

    look? Me so confused...

  • Is this a remix of the song? Also I think this is WAY better than Devo 2.0.

  • Of course it is better than Dev2.o!

  • I never really paid much attention to dancing until I saw Toni Basil in the late 70's; I thought "that looks rather good, very skilled". It's great to see these old videos of her performing.

  • Isn't she just so skilled - such a shame we don't have a popular dancer/singer on the western world stage at the moment.. This woman inspired me to dance...

  • This is one of my favorite songs from Toni Basil! This is the first time I've ever seen this video......oh well.........the video is strange but the song is awesome! :)

  • excellent love Toni, that blind must have hurt

  • This, I like. Her other song made me vomit in my mouth when I was a kid.

  • It's so obvious to see she's a professionally trained dancer. Brava!

  • FANTASTIC...saw this in early eighties. It went missing for ages, great to see it back. Love the poodles too @]]]]]

  • what was her obession with devo?

  • Well Jerry Casale Directed all her "Devo cover song" Video. And besides being good friends with Toni. Some say they were an item at one point.

  • Hey, Jazzy, I'd beg to differ- as you know ,I danced in 'You Gotta Problem' and as far as I can remember (but, hey, it IS a long time ago), Toni directed the video herself (quite a feat to be on both sides of the lens)

  • Hey Jazz, they did date early on. That's a fact I've read numerous times. She is also the character of "Soo Balz" as well.

  • They've been pretty much confirmed as an item, and it's also DEVO performing the music on the covers. Toni was one of the major forces that helped DEVO get into the music industry, for better or for worse.

  • how do you figure? Whip It had already been a huge hit a year before this came out never mind they had 4 major label LPs released before Toni Basil's first came out.

  • Well, the book "We're All Devo!" by Jade Dellinger and David Giffels tells the story pretty well. Also, before this part of her music career, Toni Basil was an actress and choreographer with connections to the music business. (As an example, she played one of the prostitutes in Easy Rider back in 1969.) She released her first single in 1966, and appeared on SNL as musical guest in the mid-70s.

  • First of all, Jazzy-thanx for posting! I AM the pink poodle- and no, I did not drop a turd! (it was a piece of poodle hair- but I like the turd story better!) It's me, Pallas in the 'ponche'-big arabesque freeze frame at the end. I have the whole Word Of Mouth on video-but your quality is better (are u JazzyJeff???)THanx so much for posting. Lots of chatter about Toni on YouTube She was/is such a great talent and innovator- always ahead of her time Love and respect to Toni xxx

  • Thanks, i never knew that, im a big Devo fan too, i saw them in concert about 4 months ago.

  • I, (the pink poodle!) am also a big Devo fan and would LOVE love love to see them in concert-despite my best efforts, can't track down when and where they'll be performing- please help me get this info! Thanx!

  • I'm not sure, im in Australia, maybe check their website out.

  • thanx-good advice (duh!:-))silly as it sounds, it took a bit of searching- fyi (for any more searching spuds) site is 'clubdevo'-

and they don't have any tour dates planned in europe at the moment...hopefully soon!

  • Yeah i just saw that myself, i was drunk and tired when i left you that previous message

  • @pallypoo123 Your a cutie!!!

  • The version on word of mouth is ten times better then this. i love toni's version better than devos but the video mix sucks. lol!

  • Great on so many levels.

But, I think one of the poodles drops a turd at 0:20.

  • Man!! That's Hilarious.. I thought I was the only one on Earth to notice that!!! ha ha ha ha ha

  • To be technical, since DEVO is performing the music—just Toni singing., it's a re-recording, not a cover.
