@Tampa0123456789 Well, she is a well renowned choreographer though..in fact much of the later work you would see through more famous artist were her back scene work...she's worked with several celebrities.
@pallypoo123 Did you say that you were one of the dancers? How did she get so many high level dancers; with people like MJ and others competing for dancers too. I am sure they must of paid a lot more than Toni Basil could?
Not one dancer in this video is below standard in their perticular style of dance.
Was that guy shabado? Were those girls from a Ballet? Every dancer was at the highest level.
I use to think janet/paula was the best but not anymore.

Now that is how you do ballet with hip hop not just another pop singer from the 1980's but a professional dancer in classical dance, and one of the founders of a style of hip hop, ha who said whites cant dance. A subject you are familiar with judging by your channel JLO- That vid on trains has to be the most bizarre piece of work I've ever seen. Your either somehow brilliant or
It took me on my puppy dog trip... if it's about addiction, dance can be addictive too.... probably a healthier uplifting addiction in moderation.... it did come out about the same time as people were dropping dead from a certain STD in NY now I think about it...still love it today...
I would actually agree about 80s music in general. As for DEVO, soulless, maybe deliberately, but unlike other bands in the era, they actually had something to say and they had interested aesthetics that they brought forward. But I can understand not liking them. You should check out the live performance of "Smart Patrol / Mr. DNA" though, it's like the anti-Whip It. :)
YeaH Stockhausen is a difficult listen and I don't do it often-once a decade I think. I saw Stockhausen in London in the late 1970's which was pretty cool. I also like Shostakovich although I prefer the French impressionists like DeBussey. What is this biological urge to defend Devo? Something to do with estrogen or testosterone? In my case I find their music depletes my serotonin levels. I think your loyalties are misplace but that too is ok :)
I like Debussy too. But there is something about that exaggerated Russian enormity that I like in Shostakovich's music.
I don't know if my urge to defend DEVO is hormonal... I just think everything about them appeals to the dadaist nerd in me. I just love them.
...man, isn't this refreshing? A difference of opinion on YouTube that turns into a civilized exchange rather than a (grammatically incorrect) insult contest?
It's wonderful when that happens I agree Its a shame its so few and far between and so far away .I get the eccentric appeal of Devo-I like Peaches for similar reasons although she breaks down social conventions far more wittily I think.
I like Peaches. But I'll argue that if DEVO hadn't done what they did as early as in the 70s, there would be far less elctro-punk type of acts today... And as far as breaking social norms, DEVO have always done it in an insidious and humourous way, whereas Peaches uses shock value a bit. But yeah, I like her.
That's probably true-I mean Lady GaGa owes a lot to Peaches in terms of visual style so I can see the antecedent back to Devo who seem rather tame in comparison. Peaches is about liberating sexuality for woman although not in a strictly feminist way. No doubt she would hate that label (or any label) I like her minimalist approach to music Maybe I'd just rather consume female art then male right now. I loved early Alanis Morrisette who was thoughtful and creative.
Pallypoo123 has commented on a few other Toni Basil Videos that I posted. She says somethings that make her seem Legit. So, I have to take her word for it.

Also, before this part of her music career, Toni Basil was an actress and choreographer with connections to the music business. since you've been such a thoughtful poster I watched the live Devo
clip. They were original for sure but there's just so much tri tones
and diminished chords I can take before reaching for my Effexer.
This track was really alienating,at least in its sound without really
delivering much. If their lyrics had any content they were drowned
out by an awful din. I'm able to listen to Stockhausen and Bartok
string quartets without any side effects but this stuff just bugs me.
Muddyw67 1 year ago
@Muddyw67
Haha, fair enough, thanks for giving it a shot! (You're wrong, but that's okay. ;-) )
For the record, I can't stand Stockhausen. And trust me I've tried. As far as classical music goes, my favourite is Shostakovich.
