At the end of the race there, that is not a 1.5s difference in 0-60 time. It's almost like the 500e is faster than mercedes quoted, and the CLS is slower than AMG quoted.....

500e also looks much sportier.

@ervikov not exactly. I think the point here was to compare the sportiest, most purpose built versions of the E Class, old and new. Back in the time of the W124, the most expensive mainstream E was the 420E, with the 500E being a limited edition, hand built model by Porsche. Fast forward to today, the standard CLS uses the E Class platform and they share innumerable components. So technically the CLS63 AMG is today's sportiest E Class, being hand built in-house by AMG.

This movie makes me feel so proud to be one of the lucky few who owns a good-as-new (130k km) 500E. The quiet interior, the calm engine which roars up when you want it, the subtle gearbox in E-setting but quick in S-setting... It's amazing, and VERY ahead of it's time.

A pity some nitwit put that dumb exhaust with those ugly rims on the movies' 500E. The car shouldn't be 'tuned' (i.e., raped) like that. I'll keep mine original for ever.

E60 was just too rare compared to the 500E to make a serious point. I think the point of this video was to show the quality of the W124's and using a one off E that could probably give the CLS a run for its money would not make for a good video.

The mercedes of the early days were over-engineered, but that was a good thing. They lasted such a long time and mercedes stopped making cars of that quality because they wanted to improve their profit margins. I love these cars and my uncle has an E300 that is over 350,000 miles

My god the fcking seats in front and even worse in the rear are so damn uncomfortable! They are somehow really "hard"..

My friends has a CLS 500, my W124 500E still goes better overall and has considerably better punch in higher RPMs over ~4800RPM....

Also the 500E/E500 has that typical Muscle-car feel somehow, it has style, people turn their heads when they hear it from distance. Its not just a car from the line, like such a crappy "non-feeling" CLS

The CLS is a completely different model from a 500E. Why couldn't they compare it to an E63 AMG or at least a W211 E55 AMG? I thought CLS 63 AMGs were harder to get than E63s. They probably don't even know the difference or like you said they couldn't even get one.
