  • Combining the soul of R&B/ Funk with classic gospel chords freakin ROCKS. Follow the Hammond (the organ) with easy going leslie, and you have a recipe that can be created by true musicians.

  • Heathers is the film I always associate with this film, and that always brings a smile to my face. Beautiful song and my preferred version of it. Just takes me back in time to the 1970s/early 1980s and that's the highest praise I could give it, period.

  • I love you Chassy Alice! Let tomorrow happen; today we do what we can with what we have...

  • From which version is the last part?

  • Best version I've ever heard! I'm surprised I haven't heard it sooner!!

  • First heard this song on the closing credits of that excellent 80's movie "Heathers". Too cool, nasty, funky. Amazing version of this song!

  • beautiful song <3 !!! i like it

  • wow this is very good, makes me like a song I never cared for one bit

  • Loving this song. :)

  • How come I never heard this before Detroit 187??? For me, this is one of their absolute best. Thoroughly bluesy and gospel-ly (is that a word?).

  • @Marvalous322 It was featured in the Movie Soundtrack for Take the Lead in 2006 starring Antonio Banderas as a dance teacher in a NY public school that did not have a dance program. I think it was based on a true story.

  • @gaflava Thanx for the heads-up. I'll definitely check this movie out. I love Sly and Iooooooove Antonio.

  • Manchester United.

  • 1-87 got me here too..but I always loved this funky sung.sly is the true master.

  • i catch myself humming this all the time!

  • fo sho , it is da shit ..... :)

  • My absolute favorite rendition of this song! Thank you so much!

  • who was the one hit wonder that also sang this song in the 80's. Singer was female.

  • bin looking for this song for a long time!!! make me smile alday long!!!

  • This song runs parallel to my life with the quintessential Buddha man...whom I fell madly in love with in an instant...yep...the gods are laughing...

  • Sounds like Prince!

  • Wow... Why did I think the "you can't beat God's giving" offering song was coming after those opening chords? This IS a beautiful, soul-drenched version!

  • this version is genius

  • Once you hear Sly sing this song ....Doris Day who? It has funky take you to church sound. I love this song.

  • beautiful, just beautiful

  • best version. hands down.

  • Good LORD!!

Does anyone else feel tears welling up during this?? It can't be just me.

Priceless. Where is talent like this hiding these days, without crappy

    pitch-control and digital time-keeping techniques?!

  • Here is some background for those of you folks who just don't know or are in denial. Doris Day had a "thing" for black men. It is well-known that she had a long affair with Maury Wills who was a black baseball player in the 50's. Doris' son was Terry Melcher who became a record producer in the sixties. Terry became friends with Sly and used to bring him around the house. Doris couldn't help herself and commenced an affair with him which both have always denied but is well-documented.

  • @bradentonguy50 OMG I didn't know that. I actually heard that Doris Day was part black (also Babe Ruth) but denied it. Is her son mixed?

  • @OlCaliGirl No way was she part black. Lily white which made it all that more funny. You probably don't remember Doris Day/Rock Hudson films like "Pillow Talk" in the early 60's. Doris always played a "goodie 2 shoes" girl who always "resisted" Rock Hudson's advances and even slapped him in the face if he "got fresh.". All the while, she was sucking the chocolate stick and Rock Hudson was taking it up "Hershey Highway: because he was so gay. Typical of white America's hypocrisy.

  • oh this song...so much soul and passion...i love it

  • No disrespect to all of you first time listeners, i know that Sly did funk all the time, majority anyway, but this isn't funk this is Soul usually it's hard to tell the difference, but i thought this one was pretty obvious though.

  • @tshot20 Nope, it HAS soul, but I think it's gospel. Like many others, Sly did start out in the church.

  • Verry good music

  • I think this song should be played at my funeral.

  • @maddison31797 i can't wait !

  • i adore this song

  • at the risk of sounding like a little girl ,does it bring a tear to anyone's eye but mine.O well then i guess that makes me a big beryl girl.

  • makes you think..and moves the soul!

  • has a gospel touch and also adds a funky feel..........everytime i hear this song i close my eyes and appreciate the beauty of it all

  • This is the best it gets.

  • I'm loving your shares, BestofBest40~really lovely! Thanks so much! I love this! Different from Doris, but grand in its own right! Love, Red

  • xxxxxx

  • If you like this then check out the Corinne Bailey Rae version

  • Yes, my mom also used to sing to me this song when I was small but all in spanish. I had no idea that it was from Sly...too bad.

  • I love this song it is H.A.M.

  • @IiMZ4evahhomee shutup kid but it is tha best version

  • In the absence of love and hate all things are clear and undisguised.

Whats amazing isnt the fact that sylvester had anything to do with singing this song, it is the spirit he relates to that sings through him. take inspiration from this indeed but you must "do your own thing"

  • sing, rose

  • my soul actually came out of my body, while i was listning to this song, it cried out, "dear god! this is the best fucking version of this song"

  • Thiss is myy songg.!

  • it doesnt get deeper funk than this

  • this track got too much soul for the common public.

  • @POW3RTOTHEP3OPL3 for damn sure

  • lord what happened to sly? he was the best musician I have ever heard. all of his songs was one the one. If he held a concert right now, I would be the first in line. all of his fans need to have a tribyte to sly stone in the park in your city and play sly stone records all day long. hey, I think I might do that this year and call it hot fun in the summertime. check me out, I think that would be grand central station. can you dig it??

  • "Lick it up,baby, lick it up!"

  • Sly and his friends are superior, in every sense...

  • Fantastic! \o/

  • Thanks for posting. It's a great cover but it's also an amazing interpretation. Think of it especially from that time...from Doris Day to The Family Stone...that's some kind of bridge. Beatifully soulfully done.

  • such a tune....amazin.

  • All time. Think it thought

  • It's called. A cover song ;D

    God, grow the fuck up.

  • No matter think it though only 4 the elements

  • No, they never dated. He only recorded her trademark song, Que Sera Sera. The rest is purely rumors which helped his version garner interest. Doris Day's career was never ever ruined. Psh!
