I can tell you all that the VHS copy I had from the 80 s was a better mix. It was actually off of those really large DVDs that came out back then. A beat club compilation from germany. This mix just does not sound correct. They mess everthing up these days. Why don't they just leave it alone instead of trying to make everying better. They never do.
Life is strange! Looking back, this very special band, likely didn't quite realize how good they were or that there music would hold up so very well. They all look back at SM sorta bittersweet. Robert's still hurt he was kicked out. Ratledge felt he stayed way too long, past what was musically and socially satisfying to him. And looking here at a young and vigorous Robert, he was blessed he didn't know of his future. But the music remains! And it is, 40 years on, STILL glorious!
@neckercube1 Yes, that means this fat scum must have listened to Soft Machine at least once in his life (even though he took the name before Elton Dean was in SM)
@MrShuggieTodd Elton Dean was in a band with him, that's why! In a group once upon a time called "Bluesology". The "John" half came from another bandmate, Long John Baldry

@MrShuggieTodd I suppose EJ now gets the audience he deserves ... I recently heard that at one of his 'concerts' when he announced he was going to do some new songs there was amass exodus to the refreshment bar ... obviously that part of the demograph where any kind of musical challenge comes, er ... last?

I was at the Amsterdam concert. Saw my first portable video camera ever, guy had a big belt loaded with batteries, and lots of other stuff. So, it was filmed by someone. Come on, man, bring it on!! About the same show as the French one, which is on the DVD (Cuneiform); I bought it, really recommended.
Judging from the looks and referring to the year this was recorded, this concert was held at the same period as Wyatt's solo effort " The End of an Ear". What a creative period he was in, despite relationship problems within Soft Machine...
@posthumanhero, MUCH agree. While a bit of the fusion was interesting, certainly were SOME nice bits, overall all of those mindlessly fast guitar scales and unmelodic jams just aren't very musically satisfying. THIRD is by far the most incredible album they did - I'd say it was OUTBLOODYRAGEOUS!
@philipatoz i don't get 'thirds'......i always thought it was flat and cold........ wyatts 'moon in june' is a nice lofi medley of old pre-ist lp songs and there is the electronics of 'facelift' -- but soft machine stopped being an innovative pop band at that time....the songs were gone.....and i suppose that's what endeared me to them........i suspect ratlege, with his degree in psychology, seized control of the ship.....if i want fusion i'll listen to herbie hancock or miles for fusion.
@posthumanhero, quite right that "Third" ended their pop output. But if you love jazz and improvisation, "Third" should be amazing to you. It's all music, layers and textures - cerebral, mesmerizing stuff. As for the fusion, this wasn't Ratledge's taste as much as of newer members - in fact, he has said he found that period less than musically satisfying. Yet, he likely needed the money. And outside of pop, fusion was driving a lot of "jazz" sales. Again, a bit of it good, but MUCH very bad!
@philipatoz interesting...looks like i have to buy '3rds' on cd because soft machine fans unanimously hold it in high regards........maybe it was the rather cheap, almost bootleggy colombia reissue i had that prevented me from enjoying it.......im also a big fan of daevid allens solo stuff, robert wyatts and kevin ayers solo stuff which might be more succesful than the beatles solo stuff....but thats another story.
@posthumanhero, my favorite track on "Third" is "Outbloodyrageous" - I've probably listened to it a thousand times. I didn't know you could get "Third" on CD. I've been looking at a way to convert all of my vinyl to MP3, albeit so that it will have a high-quality sound pumped through the stereo. Straight out of the iPod (through the stereo's jack) it will sound like crap. But there is a converter that solves this problem. I've got all of the original SM on vinyl - at least through "Alive...".
@philipatoz alwyas thought it was better to quit before you stop with 'converting'.......enjoy your vinyl as vionyl or buy the cd which, in this case, will benefit greatly from remastering........even that cd of soft machine 1 and 2 is cleaner and more ideal for listening pleasure -- if you haven't heard it on cd yet your in for a real treat.......ditto for the first coupla caravan cds.
@posthumanhero, good to know about the CD quality. As for why convert to MP3 files - it's a simple matter of cost and availability. Much of my collection of albums was not mainstream, commercial stuff - which means that very little of it is available on CD. Albums will continue to wear out and it's somewhat of a hassle to play them. Plus it's great to be able to make playlists/eliminate lesser-liked tunes. But even IF available, I can't afford buying so many CDs - I probably have 500 albums.
@philipatoz I just bought the cd realease of third two weeks ago and I can also vouch for its quality, its extremely well done and it comes with bonus live tracks, they have live versions of out bloody rageous, facelift, and Esther's Nose job including Pigling Bland. Its very worth the money
thanks you so much. I was very fortunate to see soft machine open for jimi hendrix twice, playing tunes from the "first" album. 'never got to see "third" live thanks again

SOFT MACHINE AS A FUSION BAND ALWAYS SEEMED LIKE A DRAG , BUT I GUESS THATS RELATIVE TO THE DIVERSITY AND HUMOUR OF THE FIRST TWO LPS...........
